I need someone to help me study for my Cisco class. i can provide the powerpoints I am supposed to use to study for the chapter tests. I have a hard time figuring out what I need to know for the tests as there is no study guide. I have weekly tests and i have failed the last 2 chapter tests because I was studying the wrong stuff as well as not understanding some of the questions.

we just had a test on chapter 8 which because I spent more time memorizing the chart for making crossover cables since she had spent a while talking about it I think i bombed it since only 1 question on the test had anything to do with the subject.

We are now on chapter 7. CCNA1 Correction -- I just checked my test grade for chapter 8 and I made an 87. not bad considering my chapter 2 was a 55. Our teacher is doing this kinda messed up. we started with chapter 1 then 2 then 8 and now 7 ans so on.

Ah, I think I've done that.. It was last december though so it was awhile ago.. As the questions are randomized (iirc) it's hard to know exactly what to focus on. I might have to see if I can still log in there and se what I did.. :ohwell:

EDIT: Ohgod I've passed both CCNA1 and 2. How did that happen??

the tests are not the online Cisco ones. these are ones generated by the teacher and are written. This last one was 10 questions long. It included labeling the OSI and TCP/IP models. I have not problem with the OSI model but I dont have a good way of remembering the TCP/IP model . The acronym i use for OSI model is: Programmers Do Not Throw Sausage Pizza Away
Meaning: Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, and Application.
I also have a hard time knowing what the different layers are for. like what type of device is Layer 2, etc.

That's built in the system. Layer two is Data Link, because that is level 2.

Application
Presentation
Session
Transport
Network
Data Link
Physical

The TCP model looks like this iirc, and once you get your head around how each layer works it's not that hard to remember (IF I recall correctly:laugh:)

Application - The rest
Transport - Transport
Internet - Roughly equivalent to Network, or pretty darn equivalent maybe, yeah I think so
Link - Roughly equivalent to Physical and data link.

Have you read about encapsulation (spelling?) and that stuff yet? It's prettty interesting and it gets clearer when you know how that works.

just finished it. scored a 90 this time. It seemed somewhat easier. Perhaps the AIT Networking training was the more advanced crap. IDK.

As a Networking Major in college (I've been through CCNA I-IV, CCNA Security, and CCNP Routing) you are only prepared to take ANY test on the subject if you know EVERTHING in the chapter like the back of your hand. Cisco is no joke (as you will see when you take the CCNA cert test). Cisco makes it this way to show thier worth in a real world enviorment (Unlike CompTIA). If you are stuck you can send me a PM and I will be more than happy to help you.

Oh, almost forgot the most previlent information. There is NO replacement for working with real equiptment (you will understand in the later CCNA courses). I assume your class is using Packet Tracer. Packet Tracer is a good tool, but it will not give you the real life "surprises" real equpitment will. If your end goal is to major in the subjet, setup a home lab. No less than 3 routers (1811 or 2800 IIRC), 3 Layer 3 switches (the more recent the better), and an ASA (PIX aren't used much anymore but will help you understand the differences between ASA and PIX)

Hope this helps you. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks. I doubt I could afford the 1811 or 2800 let alone 3 layer 3 switches and an ASA. I'm on VocRehab. Im in a 2 year program at the local Community College which is a CompTIA and Cisco Academy. By the End of the Program, I will have the A+, N+, Security+, Linux+, Server 2008, as well as a discount on the CCNA exams. i have had some training before when I was in the Army as a 25B. I have forgotten most of it though, hence why I am in school again. I have a hard time studying from a book. If i were able to study everything hands on, I would be perfect. As it is, we have 1-2 days between Chapter exams. Barely enough time to study for them as well as the other 3 classes I have to take. Im taking IT Foundations (A+), Web Development (Blended HTML, XHTML, and CSS), and Information Security. I have IT Foundations M/W and Cisco, Web, and ITSec on T/Th.

Very cool man! Gotta be honest Cisco is one of those things that will require 110% of your time. Realistically, I had two classes (one being Cisco and the other was some BS no need to study class). I got on average ~30 minutes of sleep during those classes per night. Ocationally, I could sneak in an hour nap or so here and there (while reading the dry Cisco Press books). Good luck with all your classes!
