Hi all,

I'm building an Open-budget PC, and it will be used for render ......
What I know is that the Core i7 3960X is the most capable Processor available for render ... Is that right ?

and which is better ASUS Rampage IV Extreme or MSI Big Bang XPower II ?

is there any RAM kit out there to fill up 128GB on the MSI motherboard ?

And finally please suggest a full PC specs to the job and remember I have open budget

Nope. Max 64 GB right now, as far as I know.


Also, memory support is CPU-dependant, so it doesn't matter that MSI says the board supports 128 GB, the I7 3960X CPU that contains the memory controller, only supports 64 GB MAX.

To get memory support for up to 128 GB, you need a Xeon CPU, in which case, the 3960X is NOT the best choice, as there are also 8-core Xeon chips, although they top-bin ones sell for about $2k a piece.

These CPU can serve 100's of GB of ram(like 750 GB, more info at the link).


Personally, since this is a work rig, I would not bother with desktop boards, and opt for either the Gigabyte X79S-UP5 WiFi($329, Intel C606 chipset, workstation-class, 14 SATA ports), or the ASRock X79 Extreme 11 ($599, X79 chipset, with built-in LSI PCIe 3.0 SAS/SATA RAID, 14 SATA ports).

depending on what you render or rather the software you use makes or breaks your GPU path. if your legitimately going with a workstation I would stay away from the OC boards in general and get a normal board. the type of cpu is also important what will you use? Their is alot that goes into builds like these it its not as simple as dropping money on a gaming mobo and a highend SB that might not be the best CPU at all depending on work load.

also do you mean montage the software? or diffirent software?

It might help to know what specific software are you planning to use (e.g: would they scale good with multiply CPUs, Tesla cards or more RAM, which is more important: performance or data protection, etc, etc).
Professional workstations are made up from very expensive parts, so you always build such systems with the used software in mind.
