I have an old LG 23" Regular TN LCD and I don't really like it...

A lot of those e-IPS cheap monitors are now available for like 200 bucks from Dell and LG, my question is: Are they MUCH better than your average 3 year old TN screen ?
I know it's kind of a low-grade IPS thing that makes it cheap so hence the question.

I've seen real IPS screens like Apple Cinema Display and it's unbelievable, do these E-IPS units even get close ?

Thanks !

I have a 24" 1920x1200 monitor from January 2008. I am all about spending loads of cash on new technology, but after looking at the difference side by side, I would not spend the money to replace my monitor. Not until OLED comes out anyway.

the last year my philips brilliance 220cw lcd tn 16:10 1680x1050 died cause dead of internal psu and i was forced to replace and i bring my actual monitor asus ML229 its led and is ips the color reproduction vs the philips is incredible but my only complain is the resolution 1920 x 1080 and not 1920 x 1080.

Roughly translated:

Last year, my Phillips Brilliance 220CW TN LCD 16:10 1680x1050 died because of the internal PSU and I replaced it with an ASUS ML229 LED/IPS. The color reproduction was incredible compared to the Phillips, my only complaint is that the resolution is 1920x1200 instead of 1920x1080.

Its ok, I don't know a single phrase in your language :D

I like the LG IPS models. I went from a LG TN 22" to a LG IPS 22" and the colors are amazing, pictures and photos are sharp. Even the cheaper IPS screens seem to do good as long as you stay away from crap like Acer :p

Fixed that for you.

Affordable 16:10 monitors are difficult to find compared to the 16:9 monitors. And then there's that 1920x1080 resolution stagnation these days...

I'll be honest, I went from a 23" Acer to a 27" Catleap, then went back to the 23" Acer for a while and I just don't notice/care for the difference. What I do love is the higher resolution since I'm a big lover of Windows 7's split screen feature, and 1440p is like have 2 720p monitors.

I'd say its worth it. I myself went from a TN and an IPS not too long ago, and about 2 months back I used my old TN again, and as expected, my experience with it was horrible.

The IPS vs TN video above only points out the obvious. What he doesn't say is IPS panels (both e-IPS and regular IPS) are 8 bit color depth, vs 6 bit on TNs. It's a LOT harder for a TN panel to produce accurate skin tones and such, esp in darkly lit scenes. For rendered images though there's far less problem with this. TN panels can also exhibit color shifting though, even on net pages.

The main difference between e-IPS and standard IPS is e-IPS have less brightness, contrast and color gamut. This is why you don't see any "HC", "W", etc, e-IPS models that designate extremely wide color gamut.

I guess it depends on the eye, I aw a huge dif going from my 23" 1152p Acer monitor to the PCBANK (basically a catleap). most noticeable is the colors, contrast and the viewing angles and the evenness of the screen while moving your position (ie: turning head etc).

1440p is actually 4x 720p :p

With the price IPS panels are at now, it makes sense if you need a new monitor to get one; even a cheap one will still be slightly better than a TN panel. An upgrade well that depends on how good your original monitor is and how much you want to spend. Going from a cheapo TN to a cheapo IPS panel is fine because cheap TNs are craaaaap, i think from high end TN to low end IPS the gains are less.

I can say that my IIyama IPS going from a mid-low end Samsung 16:10 TN was a big difference.
