AMD (NYSE: AMD) announced today it has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) North America for the eighth consecutive year. The company has also been added to the FTSE4Good Index Series. These most recent acknowledgements highlight AMD's commitment to ethical and sustainable business practices.

"AMD is proud to be ranked among the world's leading sustainable businesses and to have our commitment to ethical business practices recognized by these influential investment indexes," said Tim Mohin, director, Corporate Responsibility at AMD. "This recognition is a testament to AMD's overall commitment to delivering products that enable our customers to address today's critical technology challenges while operating ethically and sustainably."

AMD technology powers computers and servers that enable a better world -- from helping scientists advance healthcare and climate-change research to optimizing clean energy and allowing cloud computing data centers to be more energy efficient. AMD's Accelerated Processor Units (APUs) include power-saving features like AMD AllDay Power designed to extend notebook battery life. APUs also enable developers to take advantage of the parallel processing power available in graphic processing units, which help applications run faster and simultaneously. In addition, AMD's APU design permits PCs to transition to lower power idle/sleep/off states for longer periods of time.

Multi-core AMD Opteron processors for servers incorporate power management features, including enhanced AMD Virtualization technology that helps cloud data center operators perform server consolidation, increase utilization rates, and reduce overall power and cooling requirements. AMD also recently introduced the SeaMicro SM15000 server, the most recent computing innovation from its Data Center Server Solutions group that cements its position as the technology leader in the micro server category. Micro servers deliver massive efficiencies in power, space and bandwidth. The SeaMicro SM10000-XE server is the highest-density, most energy-efficient system available, using half the power, one-third the space and delivering up to 12 times the bandwidth of today's best-in-class server. With the SeaMicro SM10000-XE server, the innovative trajectory broadens the benefits of the micro server to storage, helping to solve the most pressing needs of the data center.

"We are passionately committed to developing servers that takes less space and consume less power," said Andrew Feldman, general manager of the Data Center Server Solutions group, AMD. "Our technology brings the economic benefits of efficiency -- namely reduced total cost of ownership -- together with the social benefit of doing the right thing for the environment. And when you can do both, it is an easy decision."

Improving AMD's Performance
The DJSI family of indexes tracks the stock performance of the world's leading companies in terms of economic, environmental and social criteria. More than 2,500 of the largest companies across 58 industry sectors are assessed, and only companies that fulfill certain sustainability criteria better than the majority of their peers are included on their indexes. AMD has been a constituent of the DJSI family each year since their inception. This year AMD achieved a 16% increase in its overall score, with improvements across all three sustainability categories.

The FTSE4Good equity index series selects companies that have met stringent social and environmental criteria, and are positioned to capitalize on the benefits of responsible business practices. AMD was added to the FTSE4Good Index in 2012.

AMD is also included on three MSCI Inc. (formerly Morgan Stanley Capital International) socially responsible investment (SRI) indexes: The KLD 400 index; The World ESG; and The World SRI. In addition, AMD was selected by Triodos Bank in 2012, ranking third of 24 companies in the sector for investing based on sustainability performance. Another SRI analyst firm, Oekom, rated AMD as "Prime Status." The Oekom analysis resulted in AMD being one of only two semiconductor companies listed on the Global Challenges Index -- an investment index focused on the top global sustainability challenges of this millennium.

So much social returns, so little investor returns. I think AMD's corporate board needs an overhaul.

ya considering all of the confusion with the company

Yeah, and also that the company that (apparently, else they wouldnt get this recognition) really tries to do the right thing just gets outplayed by all the companies that apparently dont care as much about sustainability and the sorts.

You'd think that doing the right thing would prove to be beneficial in the end, but once again society proves that its better to just cheat(see intel, microsoft), and generally not act responsible(basically every bank that had anything to do with the financial crisis), since it seems like most of the cheating and irresponsible companies are not doing as bad as AMD is right now.

Of course its not all black & white, but its really dissapointing to see this happening nonetheless.

Yes, sad times.

...fail to provide high end users with competative products = Become exemplary example of sustainability

Trolling?

The 7970 is on par with the 680 (arguably faster at the resolutions high end users use) and cheaper.

Their processors have been behind for some time but the Opteron series are still respected. And their APU's are good products, especially the new Trinity line up.

What you smoking?

I was not talking about the graphics division, which is/was thriving until these cuts take hold.
the APU's do not cover high end users, and will only ever be entry level and struggle to touch mid range computing.

as for specs, i have filled them in. I have an FX 6200 clocked a 4.7Ghz, and i've never been more disappointed, though financially, I cant be bothered to spend the money on a 3770k and mobo until a new gen comes out. I'm personally still praying for AMD to create 1 floatin point to one core ratio with decent outcome.

You must have missed the recent driver thread. Also their game giveaway is exemplary, $180 worth of AAA-title games with a $300 graphics card. ($280 if you count rebates)

Um I said it was a super smart move to downsize to survive in the "AMD going bust" thread and this pretty much validates what I said. Some of you guys need to take some economic classes.

As I said before AMD is going no where. They still have good margins.

First off sorry for that,We sometime get a Fan-boy war going on in these topics. Most of the time some of them leave there system specs blank. Thanks for explanation too.

I too am very disappointed in AMD and what they are doing. If Intel had there way we all would be spending $1000 on a cpu (Pentium II-III days for the 950mhz) I have used Intel and AMD,Right now I have to use what i can afford.AMD was giving best bang for the buck,But now it is just well Everyone wants Intel. If AMD ever gets the cpu to what there graphics can do then we would have a good Intel price war along with AMD.

No worries, I respect Intel for their more than exemplary performance in games, and used to love AMD for giving them a damn good run for their money. I run a Q6600, a Phenom II x6 1055t, an AMD A6 laptop and an FX 6200 for home and work. This announcement just makes me marginally angry, that as an AMD user who knows full well how piss poor AMD chips are in the higher market segment, is getting praise for blowing off its workforce in the only area it has truly shined, and decidedly continued on the road to destruction with cheap (but power hungry as hell) Opteron server processors, which my company dont use because Intel are just cheaper in the long run power consumption wise, and their Piledriver efforts which is just a revision of bulldozer. I truly hope that Steamroller is not another Cram-overclocking-PR-Crap-into-consumers-faces fiasco, then a month after release, all the gamers expecting substantial power from their high end cores are only to be beaten by a IVB 3750 which is more than reasonably priced.

Again if you know basic economics this announcement makes perfect sense. This is the real world. You gotta survive at all costs and companies that are not held back by unions and such can make cuts like this to survive. AMD as I said is a prime example how to make it work with what you got. Kudos to AMD. Surviving like a BOSS!

Good god AMD is as bad as the American presidential race! First they say they are going under now they are saying every thing is just FINE! Is Obama running AMD now?

Who said they were going under again? Also I think you need to READ before you comment. It wasnt AMD saying they are in great shape......it was the Dow Jones who said it. Get a grip man.

Apples and oranges here! The Dow saying this is just as bad as them saying this as well. Because when the Dow says this they will soon follow! Wake up dude. The internet has been a buzz with AMD/ATI going under. 3q report not looking good, AMD cutting the workforce and there video card side is going under. Man Some need to get a grip for sure. Obama will send them a check soon any way. All part of the great American give away!
