What is the typical 5v power consumption of a computer? I am trying to figure out if I can run all of my high end fans at 7v. I have 4 fans that are rated for 3.3A@12V and 4 that are rated for 3.9A@12V. I know not to backfeed into a powersupply, but what is the safe amount to run off of the 12V+5V?

That depends on which line you're running them at. I'm not sure I understand your question. The 12V lines are rated at 25A each and the 5V line is rated at 30A.

This depends on the number of HDDs,. SSDs, and USB devices. There is no "set" average, that i can tell. First power up is where your problem will be, I dunno that anyone really checks this currently, honestly. From suer reports of issues, I coudl say that Corsair did not consider number of HDDs at startup with some PSUs...

I'd suggest to get a proper fan controller to do this.

There is ONE fan controller rated for the wattage each fan pulls

1ST PC CORP. FC-FC9B 4 Channel Throttle Control Op...

at $60 a pop and needing two of them...

Then find a controller design and build your own with breadboard?

Most PSUs are 150W-180W for 5 V, with drives and other things, I do not think this is such a good idea. Older rigs, sure, but not so much with modern ones.

or get one of those GPU add-on PSUs for it...

The issue isn't the wattage when you use the 12V and 5V rails to create a "7V" rail you backfeed 5V@whatever amperage into the 5V rail. While this isn't a huge issue when you have multiple HDD's, many many USB devices etc. The issue comes when you start to do what I am doing and running multiple high amp fans off of the "7V" rail.
