Can I be sure it's the motherboard?

So it's my bro's pc. Again..

It isn't POST'ing. Monitor remains on standby.

I removed all his RAM and the pc doesn't even beep! :wtf:

I removed his graphic card, onboard video doesn't work (it used to work some months ago when his graphics card got faulty and I tested onboard video. In fact, he had spent weeks using onboard video till I found a new graphics card for him).

(When I replaced his faulty 8800GT with an AMD 4890 I had also replaced his PSU with a brand new modular Corsair 650W.)

What do you think?

Try jumping the BIOS.
Not RAM, not graphics, not psu.
You get a message if it doesnt see a cpu, and you say it isnt POSTing so I'd say yes, mobo is fudgato'd

What do you mean 'jumping the BIOS'?

Sorry English not my first language here, so 'jumping' means an entirely different thing to me :eek:

What's sure is that I can't get into the BIOS. Pc not posting.

Perhaps he means something like clearing cmos/bios with jumpers and taking out the battery.

What does your bro even have for a motherboard? Are there POST indicators on the board that tells you what stage of the BIOS the motherboard is in?

Are both the six pin connected to the 4890? Fans on the card are spinning? Is the card now connected to the monitor? If the onboard video is dead can you check with another GPU?

By the way what's the motherboard and CPU?

Yes.

The pc (with 4890 inside) had been working fine for months, uptil a week ago.

It was.

During troubleshooting I removed the card and connected the monitor to the motherboard's onboard video. Onboard video used to work, it's not disabled from the bios or anything. Before I got him the 4890 he used onboard video for a couple of weeks when his old 8800GT quit working.

Not really. All I have here is his dead 8800GT which would be useless, and a 5970 in my daughter's pc and a 670 in mine. And I'm very reluctant to use those as test cards...... :eek:

I don't know if this is relevant but the lock of the pci-e is broken (you know that little lever-like thing you have to pull down to remove the card).

As a result, the card (which is quite heavy with its cooler and all) kinda isn't perpendicular with the base of the pc but is drooping a little... even though it's well fixed with screws to the back of the case.

Could this be the problem? Could this have ruined the motherboard to the extent that not even onboard graphics is working?

Well BP, I have to say, short of being able to test the power supply, even though it is almost new, it really sounds like the motherboard took a big dump! :-(

I am assuming you unplugged the optical (DVD) drive, hard drive, and removed any other items plugged into the motherboard?

Just discovered something...

A tiny heatsink from the VGA was loose in the case.

His 4890 (which I had bought used) has got an Accellero cooler and lots of tiny aluminium heatsinks.

I think that heatsink must have touched the motherboard and shorted it out. I'm guessing so since the pc doesn't post even with the 4890 removed.

Now I'm just hoping the 4890 isn't fubared as well! :ohwell:

In any case, I'm building him a new pc. I just hope I won't have to get him a new VGA as well!
