Reps on the show floor have been reported to say about Piston:

"This is NOT STEAM-box"

Really tired of seeing these threads then claiming this is "STEAM-Box" when the company that makes the product says otherwise.

It looks quite cool but what exactly is it? Looks like one of them mini in a box pc's ( forgive me don't know the correct name) but Steam doesn't have it's own os like Xbmc? So what use would it be? Unless I've missed it completely :)

Edit : posts above me beat me to it. Dam iphone taking ages to type a post. Oh so it's like a console? Just read link

Polygon.com said:
Update 2: Valve officials say that Piston is one of many prototypes they're showing off at CES.

http://www.polygon.com/2013/1/7/384...-modular-computer-optimized-for-steam-and-big

And then, from Gabe himself:

Escapist Magazine said:
Gabe Newell Clarifies That Piston Is Not the "Steam Box"

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/new...ll-Clarifies-That-Piston-Is-Not-the-Steam-Box

I know more about STEAM-Box than most. Most I cannot repeat. That is all. :p What I will say, though is that STEAM BOX is not hardware...but a hardware PLATFORM that many companies will be making hardware for.

Gabe Newell said:
We'll come out with our own [system] and we'll sell it to consumers by ourselves. That'll be a Linux box, [and] if you want to install Windows you can. We're not going to make it hard. This is not some locked box by any stretch of the imagination. We also think that a controller that has higher precision and lower latency is another interesting thing to have

It's the first time I see this one so I don,t really expected people to appreciate my post.

Don't take it personally.

This same news is all over the web, and it's not true, Xi3 is not the sole maker of "STEAM BOX", and they've said so to all those people claiming they saw it on the show floor. I've seen literally hundreds of sites reporting this over the past couple of days, and nearly every single on is W-R-O-N-G, and I hate them for it, especially the ones that post that Xi3 staff have told them Piston is NOT Steam BOx, yet still report it as such.. :p

So let's step back, listen to the company that makes it, that says it's not STEAM BOX, and go with that.

You see, Valve is partnered with all sort of companies for this, and these other partners are starting to get pissed, hence Gabe's statement clarifying the situation.

Perhaps they could clarify when the hell I get HL3 instead of this?

I was just posting some news.
And, I never claimed it to be "The STEAM BOX".
As, I highlighted(in bold) from the article... "one of many prototypes".

Quote from the article you posted, "The big beard at Valve says the "Piston" PC unveiled yesterday is just one of several partner projects the company has on the go."

The pictured hardware is NOT Piston. That's the X7A. Piston is not on the show floor. I hear where you are coming from, however.

What I will say, though is that STEAM BOX is not hardware...but a hardware PLATFORM that many companies will be making hardware for.

That is the only conclusion that makes any sense given what Valve has said, and it doesn't really take any inside gleaning to see that.

For this to be as versatile, up-gradable, modular, cost effective and accessible as something of this nature needs to be, it's the only plausible way to make it.

Steam has so many games on it and can be used in so many ways, it wouldn't make much sense to make a static system for it.

I wouldn't doubt that even the base platform parts required are not set hardware pieces (eg same shell always used, etc.)

Image taken from CES.
Idk... It does say Piston on it.

Maybe someone actually at CES should fill us in?

I know. But the Xi3 reps @ CES are clear to say it's not actually piston, since the specs are not finalized. what's in that box is just the X7A, which has varied configurations, but Piston should have a set config.

It's really not a big deal, and I love how everyone is hoping that it is real. Too bad they didn't fund the Kickstarter though.:p

Yep you're right Dave, the Piston is going to be based on there X7A "performance level" modular-pc.

Based, so it'll be pretty close, I'm sure.

Is it really surprising anything Valve shows would be shrouded in confusion? They're the type that like to let devout fans wait for years without telling them anything.

This is what happens when concept models are shown before the concept is even finalized.

The Xi3's Kickstarter had it going for $499 or more and $1003 or more would get you an X7A... So, price is steep!
