Chip Cold Bugged ? can't get over 2.6 ghz

What does it mean when a chip is cold bugged. Anyone ever heard of that?

Opteron 165 CCB1E 0606VPMW

Was wondering because I just bought a Opteron 165 . It has a good stepping code CCB1E 0606VPMW and so far will do 2.6ghz (1.35v )and will boot at 2.7ghz, 2.8 ghz, 2.9 ghz and 3.0ghz but not stable. If I try to put say 1.525v or 1.55v into the chip it won't even boot. I've never seen this before. I think if I could get it to take a higher voltage it would become stable. However 2.6 ghz seems to be it's limit. I realize it is faster now than a 4200,4400,4600,4800,170,175,180 and matches a FX60 and Opteron 185. I was hoping to get 3.0 ghz out of it still for 158.00 someones going to get a deal when I sell it if you look at it that way.

Are you overclocking the FSB or jumping up the multiplier for the chip?

Fsb and its at 9x290 now at 1.35v upping the voltage doesn't seem to help might try dropping to 8x. Also multipliers are locked on Opterons 165 at 9 and can only move down.

What about the hyper transport bus? Have you lowered it to 3X (600MHZ)?

yes have tried that. This chip would go higher however it doesn't like voltage over 1.5v

Keep FSB as close to stock as possible and use the multiplier, it'll show if the CPU is stable beyond 2.6GHz while eliminating potential board\FSB\RAM limits. It seems very odd it will boot all the way to 3GHz from 2.6 but not stable, unless your chip is a freak of nature, I highly doubt your chip itself has reached its limit yet. I'd say 2.8GHz it can likely do stable.

Ket my Opteron 170 will do 9x340 at 1.475v with this set up simulating a 165 . When I ran this chip I set it up at 1.475 v htt x3 9 x334 it boots but won't prime. I then set it to 9x324 would boot no prime, 9x314 would boot but no prime ,9x300 would boot but no prime, 9x290 boots fine at 1.35v prime all day. If I give it more juice than 1.525v I get a black screen and my computer shuts down like I pushed the power button. Im not sure what the deal is but this chip seems to hate alot of voltage. It runs cool and works fine but won't go over 2.6 , and i'm not sure why. My Opteron 170 with 610 stepping and this Opteron 165's stepping are in the same category my Opteron 170 kicks this chips azz. My ram and Fsb are not bottle necking this chip my ram runs at DDr560 at 3438t1 2.8v and my fronside bus has hit stable at 340. The prior owner also stated he couldn't get it over 2.6 either but that it was stable all day long at 2.6ghz on stock voltage..
