I've had my new computer built for about 2 weeks now. It's a psudo-htpc as in it's plugged via VGA(DVI>HDMI bad clarity) to my 32' LCD but i'm using my TV's tuner card to watch TV. As of now, i'm using onboard video which I really want to upgrade to as for some reason, dvd'd stutter a bit and I want to game. I'm not sure how much longer I can hold out for the new video cards but they have such great deals now that it may surpass what I could get with the DX10 cards. Here is what I'm thinking of getting.

JetWay x1650xt 115$ (99$ after mail-in)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814153032

HIS x1650xt 129$ (109$ after mail-in)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814161054

Sapphire x1950gt 149$ (125$ after mail-in)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102034

All have their pro's and cons. I heard that the 1950 fan is really loud which detracts me a bit but has great performance. The HIS is great for the price and is completely passive which is a big plus but is downclocked. The jetway is clocked normally but the fan may be loud, but is also extremely cheap.

What do you guys think I should do? pick one of these up this weekend (mail in offers end in a couple days) or should I keep waiting for the dx10 cards?

Why not the x1900GT?

I would say the X1900 GT.

However, with mid-range DX10 cards coming out soon I would say wait another month or 2.
Might as well since this will and kind of is outdated.

I know DX10 games arent out, but what I am saying is that you could get a better video card.

True...a midrange DX10 card (something like an 8600) might just outperform a high end DX9 card (something like a x1950XTX). It should at least come very close. However, we won't know until the first benchmarks come out. The second quarter of 2007 should be a very interesting time for video cards.

Flash it to a x1950pro, and clock it back up!
Ohh look now you have a x1950pro.... In application use they have been shown over and over again to beat 2 x1650xt's in crossfire as a single card.

The x1950GT is your only choice. Why consider the others, they are very much lower in terms of performance, and the x1950GT is just an underclocked X1950pro.

Id skip the 16xx series entirely and go for either a 7xxxGT or go for the 19xx series. I don't think ATI has cornered the budget market as well as it did a year ago with the amazing x800/850 line.

Just wait for a good deal to pop up.

I vote X1950GT and flash it, just keep it cool and clock it up, live for the moment, DX10 is still around the corner in terms of games, just how long that corner takes to go round is anyones guess ;)

Well the thing is i'm not in DIRE need of a graphics card right now, but it seems like the 1950gt is a great deal and i'm using onboard. Should I however wait for the 8600GT @ 129$ when new card are anounced next week or the r600 or go for it.

You wont be able to even use DX10 on windows XP, so why get so hyped about it. Also, since vista is going to be so much of a resource hog, games run slower on Vista than on XP.

True, but those DX10 cards still outperform DX9c cards in DX9c. I vote to wait for the benchmarks. If the 8600 is cracking 6000 in 3Dmark06, I'd say go for that. If they are that powerful, it's going to be hard for me not to sell my x1950XT and buy two of them since I have an SLI motherboard.

I understand your comment about the X16** series they are a bit rubbish and the X1650XT came far too late. But the X1900GT is a very good card for the price, in fact I believe its a whole lol better value than the 79** series overall. I know it can't outperform a 7900GS in most games (except in NFS where it absolutely pwns!) but for the budget price its unbeatable. Its just a shame it came so late in DX 9.0c production cards. They needed this sort of performance in their budget line a long time ago.

I think that may be more about the drivers being rushed out (and some not even out yet:shadedshu ) I suspect that this will change in about 3 months time at max

I plan on getting an 8600 ultra (maybe) and it "supposedly" outperforms the 8600GT by quite a margin, and I know you said sub $150, yet you are willing to lay down $150 now just to upgrade in a couple months to a DX10 card..? I say put out the extra $30 and get the 8600 ultra(my sources say $150 for the GT and $180 for the ultra, could you point me in the direction of your source so I can have a look see?) :D
