P9X79 Pro: "System Unstable"

I'm having some weird issues with the i7-3930k/P9X79 Pro system that I have the honor of currently running. It happened when I shut it down and moved it so that I could move around some of my computers. Now whenever I boot it, it says "System Unstable. Multiplier may be locked to 12x"

When Windows boots, it says that the CPU temperature is 91C on all cores--but this seems impossible. The heatsink is cool to the touch and the temperature doesn't seem to depend on load. The other specs are:
Antec 550w PSU
Radeon HD7770
Some HDD
Xigmatek Gaia

I've tried multiple RAM arrangements--the 2x2GB of G.SKILL that was in there, a single stick of G.SKILL 2GB, and the 2x4GB Ripjaws set from my 3770k. I've tried resetting the BIOS, taking out the battery, and still no luck--it still maintains that the system is unstable and boots at only 1.2GHz.

Running the latest UEFI version? Looks like the last one was released about 6 weeks ago.

Sorry I'm late to the party. Sounds like the BIOS went wonky. BTW - a cool heatsink sometimes means it's not getting good contact and not transferring any heat. Is this an air cooler?

Make sure you set the XMP profile in the BIOS for the ram. Makes it easy that way. :toast:

I'd expect the heatsink to be cool--I have it sitting in front of a fan blowing ~40F air in from outside

I flashed the BIOS with the latest one from Asus (no idea why I didn't think of that) and all appears to be working. It's even overclocked itself more--I didn't know that the SB CPUs would do 126MHz FSB, but apparently it did so automagically.

I'm not aware of this? Do you have some "auto-OC" setting turned on?

I don't think so--but I'll check later. I know that I loaded defaults after I flashed the new BIOS, set the date/time, and then booted. And somehow got 4.17GHz :confused:

Make sure the TPU switch is turned off. My dad's ASUS M4A89GTD Pro (or whatever it is) has a TurboV switch that automatically overclocked the X6 1100T to 3.85GHz, and in the dumbest way possible (raised the HTT clock and set the RAM speed at like 830MHz.

I don't think so, but I will check tonight. I didn't know that this platform could even do this, though.

X79/LGA 2011 has BCLK straps, contrary to LGA 1155. It allows you to de-link the CPU from the buses so you aren't confined to the measly few MHz you can get on LGA 1155.
