New hardware / should I do it ??

My friend has bought a DIY computer kit - a build for his father.
His father passed away before he got the chance to build it, and he is now
offering me the CPU and motherboard for 300$. The parts have not been used and are unboxed.

Should I do it?

I am using this computer mainly for gaming, Linux stuff testing (security) and a little Oracle DB scripting.....ohh and WCG crunching......allmost 24/7

Current setup:
CPU:FX 8150 BE octo
MOBO: ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
Cooling: Antec KÜHLER H2O 920 with 2 x 120 mm push/pull
MEM: 4x4 GB DDR3 1866 MHz Dominator Platinum
GPU: ASUS GTX 670 DirectCU II
PSU: Corsair Professional Series Gold AX850
HDD: OCZ Vector 256 GB and OCZ Vertex4 256 GB

Future setup?? :

Is a good deal, the motherboard alone is 200$ and then you can sell your current AMD system to recoup come of that money.

Dunno the 8150 will crunch more its close in games etc and you could sell your old one if you have the money spare, plan b buy it fpr cruncher 2

Right now CPU's are on the bottom of the totem pole when it comes to crunching since the new GPU work units have been released. My 5770 get close to 20K on its own, a OC 2600K get like 7K

Thanx for thoughts guys........brandonwh64 is right about GPU work units....my second rig with a HD7979 on an FX4170 is hammering ... more than my FX8150 and GTX670.....

I am thinking that the i5 3570K is faster than the FX8150 - and to be honest - there are so few applications taking advantage of 8 cores.... and yes the GPU part is outperforming the CPU no matter what in WCG.......

Hmmm think I´ll buy the i5 and mobo and sell the FX8150/Sabertooth.....

I'd buy the 3570K/Z77 board. Should be a lot snappier than the Bulldozer and consume much less power. BD only seems to do well with server-like loads that use all the cores. Even though the core temperature of the Intel chips is higher, the actual amount of heat dissipated is much less and that's why I got rid of most of my Phenom II systems.

Phenom II X6 1100T @ 3.4GHz/1.35v + 2x GTX 460 @ 825/2000/1.000v + Corsair TX750 80Plus = 575-600w full load.

Core i7-3770K @ 4.3GHz/1.18v + Radeon 7970 @ 1125/1500/1.175v + GTS 450 875/2000/1.037v + Rosewill RG530 80Plus = 360-400w full load.

Not exactly apples to apples, but it's still a huge difference. The 3770K dominates the PII X6 in crunching (over double the points).

I would go for it and I'm all about AMD

The 990FX/8150 should have more than enough resale value to offset most of the cost. If you had the FX-8350 I would be a little more hesitant but it's not enough of a plus not to do the swap

It is going to be a lateral move. You will not get any additional performance going to an Intel i5 3570K. I think you would be better spending money going to a FX-8350 or if it was a Intel chip that supported hyper-threading. I personally don't see an realistic improvement to justify spending $300 and trying to sell stuff you have working just fine now to recoup.

Went from my
Sabertooth 990FX R2/FX 8150 (Clocked @4.4 GHz 24/7)
to
Maximus V GENE /I5 3570K (Highest stable clock @4.6 GHz 24/7)

(The MSI Z77 mobo was DOA so I got the ASUS Maximus V Gene instead for the same price)

BUT......the feeling is not that it is faster.....sure in the 2 benchmark/PI tests I have taken the i5 is faster......but in games and real life (video rendering/Office use/daily tasks) it does not feel faster at all......and it is slower in WCG/BOINC......that maybe to the fact 4 cores/8 cores......

Soooooo ..... I made a bad call - and I will look the AMD way next time I upgrade.....
