I was suspicious that a PCI 3.0 something gpu will not work with my motherboard, so thanks for getting me out of the dark.

Most cards still can't take advantage of all of the bandwidth that PCI-E 2.0 offers.

Have you thought about trying to overclock that e8400? Mine used to do 4.2 easily on my Gigabyte P45 motherboard, and that was before I got into water cooling.

A ram bump to 4 Gigabytes (or more depending on your OS) would also probably help immensely.
