What socket should you get if you're building a PC today?

3 months ago, 1155 was the socket to get unless you wanted the new 6 or 8 core intel processor in which case you get the 2011. Has this changed?

I already built my PC, so I won't be building another. I was just wondering.

Depends. I have my 1155 gaming system. I just got an am3+ system for running gpu's crunching and general compute work. Am3+ seemed great for a cheap system that if I wanted to could have lots of cores. They both are perfect for their intended use.

It depends on which purpose the PC will have to fulfill.

Gaming and lightly threaded applications? 1150 Haswell.

Encoding, rendering, anything that uses more than 4 cores? 2011 SB-E/Ivy-E.

You'll always know when you need more than 4 cores anyway.

There's not much sense in buying LGA 2011 unless you need 6+ cores and/or are powering 3+ graphics cards. As for AMD/Intel, take your pick.

  • Will 3770k work with 1150?
  • Why is 1150 better than 1155 in your opinion?
  • What about encoding, rendering, etc; intensive and heavily threaded applications, but don't want to fork out $9999999 for 8-core processor but want to use the 3770k which is the best quad out currently? Then what?

There's not much sense in buying LGA 2011 unless you need 6+ cores or are powering 3+ graphics cards. As for AMD/Intel, take your pick.

this is what I thought...

3770K uses socket 1155. 3770K is fine. Haswell will not be that much better is what the word is ATM.

It's a choice about if it's worth or it is not.

Are those cores worth money to you? There are some people who render for work and the time saved means money gained.

Do you render for fun? Well then a quad 3770K is enough.

As for 1155 is better than 1150?

If you already own an Ivy Bridge CPU then there is no reason you should upgrade to 1150 Haswell, it's a marginal performance increase.

Haswell is coming in a few months. If you don't want to wait, look at Ivy Bridge or AMD. If what you intend to do supports multithreading very well, AMD may be the better bang for the buck.

They almost are, it's not a stupid choice to just wait if you need to upgrade.

Would have been a moot point 6 months ago, but man it's almost out.

ok so this is accurate then if you're going to go with a 22nm chip, then there's not much benefot of haswell over ivy, so might as well keep 1155 unless you wanted a bradwell processor.

yea so if haswell is 22nm then there's really no reason to "upgrade" unless you already have an 1150 chipset (in the future), because ivy is also 22nm. and i'm sure the price on 1155 and ivy will be significantly cheaper than haswell, at least moreso then the negligible performance increase.

1155, 2011, wait for 1150, FM2 or am3+.

I really, REALLY dont see the point in this.

I would expect even more price drops before haswell so retailers and etailers can deplete stock but hey, it's Intel, prices may not budge.

If I had to sell it all and start over I'd be aiming for 1150 in micro ATX. Getting harder to justify going full size these days.

Fact of the matter is, is that 1155 is dead. That may sound far fetch since the performance of the chips available for it right now will last you a few years, but there won't be any chips to upgrade too without having to switch motherboards for a different socket (1150).

It also consumes that much more power. I know, I own one.

IMHO if you have to ask which socket to go with, that alone tells me that skt2011 is not for you.

I don't know about other skt2011 owners, but I didn't think about upgrading my rig then choose X79. I chose X79 then decided to upgrade. You know what you need a computer for, and if you're not going to be doing heavily-threaded tasks, utilizing VT-d, or using some of those 40 PCI-E lanes, then skt2011 is a bad choice and a waste of money.
