It's a prequel. As in she isn't MEANT TO BE A SEASON TOMB RAIDER

Which might all so mean they might step it up some for the next one and make it harder.

Although whats worrying me more than any thing is that Square Enix have been knocking some great games out over the last few years and to see that they making all these changes to the company kinda bothers me as it might make the games less\much appealing.

If i have any hope for a company making a decent game it is Square Enix i hope i can still say that later.

Actually it's a reboot of the first game not a prequel, as was Anniversary, which WAS in fact very challenging in both platforming and puzzles, so Lara had to be quite seasoned there. Keep in mind it's about the experience the player has just as much as what Lara is about.

Here Lara quickly adapts to killing people and taking death defying leaps, as if she becomes a seasoned adventurer overnight, yet she still whimpers throughout. It's not consistent with her adapting physically, plus the tombs are just WAY too easy.

I wasn't expecting something as challenging as Anniversary, esp since SO many whined about the difficult platforming it had, but I was hoping it would be at least as difficult if not more so than Underworld's puzzles and platforming, but it's actually easier, save for the relics.

They may as well have incorporated the outfit chest with the tomb chests. Lara easily whizzes through a tomb puzzle, cue the Jackson Five's "ABC, it's easy as 1,2,3". Lara opens the chest and finds a new outfit, then the real puzzle begins.

"Oh dear", says Lara, "...what should I wear?" In the background Jonah shouts, "LARA, the boat is ready!" Lara replies, "Never mind, leave without me, I can't decide what to wear!" Then the scene fades as Lara mumbles, "Why do they have to make the puzzles in these games SO hard?"

Like I said, Bio Infinite is boring in similar ways, but it offers WAY more challenge and just overtook TR 2013 at the top of the chart, and with it's greater challenge and many upgrades that can't be bought all in one play through, it will likely render this game a mere memory soon, because as far as replay value, it leaves this game in the dust.

I honestly don't understand your issue with the game? You think it was too easy...? That Lara wasn't some elite Ninja woman with the IQ of 180 that is immensely great at solving puzzles and does a bit of treasure hunting on the side?

This is a different Lara. A young Lara.

Actually, as I said, what you don't understand is this is not in fact a prequel of the series as you claim, it's a REBOOT of the first game. They've already made a reboot called Anniversary, which was far more challenging and in tune with what Lara's skill set has always been about.

Underworld took that skill set and merely added a few acrobatic moves while seriously dumbing down the gameplay as far as puzzle and platforming challenge. Relics are now just a matter of easily finding them vs negotiating death trap puzzles.

Yeah, I get that reboot means makeover as much as remake, but TR 2013 clearly has not only excessively dumbed down the series, it even contradicts itself. We are led to believe we need to hunt and eat to heal, which ends up really being a couple scripted moments in the game, with hunting being mere optional auto applied XP.

She yells and cries at first, and that's understandable given the makeover, but even after she's killing hordes of enemies and jumping off cliff after cliff, she's STILL portrayed as this scared little model with pristine hair. Clearly Lara's character is just contrived for the intent of cinematic effect with the pretense of added emotional realism.

THAT'S what I'm saying, do you get it now? And yes, the gameplay is far too easy. Anyone that's played Anniversary can easily see that a lot of things in TR now are slanted toward casual gameplay. TR used to be a cerebral experience involving lots of dexterity. It's a mere shell of what it used to be.

Just completed the storyline of Tomb Raider Reboot.
I have to go with the 'It's far too easy crowd'.

Don't get me wrong, it IS a good game and all, I just expect Tomb Raider to be more stressful when it comes to puzzles to progress forward.
There were very few times where I had to stop and take a good look at how I am to get from A to B.

Only part which I can see as being difficult would be collecting some of the challenge tokens since there is no map guide for those.

I like the way Lara was modeled in this version.
But then I never have liked the tits on stick model and this Lara had a decent amount of deep scars.

Yeah it had the potential to be a very good game had they made platforming and tombs more elaborate, ramped up the difficulty modes better or added a 4th, and fleshed out the survival RPG element better.

I like the graphic makeover (save for the hair being a bit over the top) and I don't really mind that much of it plays like a shooter, I just don't like that they so drastically stripped out the traditional Lara Croft type challenges.

Yeah maybe they needed to add extra challenges for a even harder difficulty level so it would of catered for more people

Adding another difficulty level would have helped some, but only doing that would have made it feel even more like a shooter, because it would have only affected the combat. Unfortunately making platforming and tombs more elaborate and challenging isn't really possible for that which already exists in the game, but they could add some more intricate tombs via DLC or something. With big enough underground caverns it's possible to kill two birds with one artifact. LOL

They came out with the Missing Link DLC for DE: HR, one can only hope.

They did a good job of annihilating Dungeon Siege III. I went back to playing the originals because of it. Deus Ex wasnt so bad.

Originals were great, many hours played. 10 Mins into DSIII i quit and contemplated a refund.
Nothing has anything on the original Deus Ex. The new one would be ok if the old one never existed.

Goes for most games though were they think change is good for example Ghost Recon, Neverwinter Nights, Bioshock, Dragon Age cand COD just to name a few..

They get away with it some time like with COD but Ghost Recon became a great shooter and UBI promised some thing they never should of as they came out with GRAW which was a total fail and to day they still pushing the crap then they go blame it on piricy and 1/2 dozen other things when really all anyone wanted was a updated GR which today they still failing to produce and the worsted part is they could produce as Far Cry 2 and 3 would be a good starting point with a bunch of changes. In fact FC2 and FC3 are closer too what the GR community wanted than the shit they came up with..

Change is not always good and to be honest i have started to think change is most likely wrong or i would not think so badly about the follow ups of the originals which is why i still love Arma 3 because it's not gone to far from it's roots ( VBS ).

And i believe that's why so many are having such a issue with TR change is not always good but like i said in another post i was so glad it was not really picky and annoying to were you failed to jump some thing that it was like some older games were you were talking a split second difference. And seems in this case that it pissed more people who loved the game than made happy.

Although bad sales could be all so blamed on Steam and such as why should i pay $660 for a game that may have bugs in it and i could possible get for 33% weeks later and with a possible fix so in all it's not just about changes today..

The only sequels I've really enjoyed in the last year are Max Payne 3 and Dead Space 3. They get accused by some of being bastardized versions of the originals, but I felt both had necessary changes, while retaining enough of the originals to keep them integral and interesting.

yeah I didn't understand why they made me hunt to get food and make it back to a fire and then once done it was not needed at all. I thought at first that i would have to hunt for food throughout the entire game. That was a bummer.

The no hunting to survive thing isn't really a spoiler so much as a head's up that it's not really an included feature in the game. It's more of a let down finding that out whilst playing vs being warned of it. That way you don't get your hopes up over nothing.

I'm about two hours into it and I'm so pissed off at it, I'm on the brink of ragequitting. The reason being the symbolism for actions without adequately explaining WTF they do. In those action sequences, I'm having to look at the button mappings for what the symbols mean is infuriating. If I wanted to study hieroglyphs, I'd study the Egyptians. Not to mention the game is overly dramatic (it's abundantly obvious nothing goes to plan in the first 10 minutes so everytime something breaks or almost kills Croft, the noise annoys me because it is completely expected) and the jungle/hunting/survival thing is getting very old (see Far Cry 3 and Assassin's Creed III).

Yeah it annoyed me too as i looks were the circle was and not at the bottom middle of the screen lol. Shame they rushed that as it's like cross from xbox and PC lol.

They fixed the problem with the QTE icon not showing in some of the battles early in the game in the first patch. It's pretty much always the key/button mapped to melee. When I first got the game I'd already been chatting about it and expected some problems with that, but by then I also knew it was the F key you had to tap when the red circles appear.

So for me the QTE glitch was almost a non issue, and since they fixed it relatively quickly, I don't really rage on them for that. It's more the overall design of the game that bothers me. It ends up getting a bit boring IMO. It's just a casual shooter with easy platforming and puzzles, so for me it was a quick 3 play throughs and I was done with it.

That said, I also felt the way they displayed a lot of the onscreen prompts for QTE was ridiculous and hard (esp for my 55 yr old eys) to read. Just the choice of using red text over a black background was pretty stupid. At least they didn't paste them in the way of what you need to see though. They kept them at the bottom of the screen. I guess that's good or bad depending what you prefer, but me, I hate text that covers the screen.

What do you guys think, since this has always been a pretty popular franchise, of them making two different versions, a casual shooter one for mainstream, and a hardcore platforming/puzzling version for avid TR fans. Kinda like the way EA has done both arcade and more SIM-like versions of NFS. I just hate to see them let TR waste away into a boring experience.

I agree. I am not compelled to play the game compared to competing games like Far Cry 3. On a scale of 1 to 10, it rates "meh."

Tomb Raider 1-3 were popular (great success on PlayStation). TR4-8 were miserable. TR9 is somewhere in between. The original Tomb Raider games were unique and they still are today. You advanced through levels by solving puzzles, not by finding some item to get you to a place you couldn't reach previously (Zelda'esque). They basically turned Tomb Raider into an every-adventure game. The only thing that sets it apart now is the female progonist. Oh wait, there's Samus Aren... TR9 is just fail. It doesn't do anything extraordinary, it doesn't have a compelling story, it doesn't have any elements that haven't been recycled in a previous game a thousand times over, combat is dull, and the list goes on.

They finally brought Tomb Raider into the 21st century but it reeks of mediocrity. TR10 could really be something but, the sad thing is, heads rolled at Square Enix for the poor sales TR9 brought in. I give it a 60% chance that the franchise is killed for good or becomes an accessory to its namesake films.

I think no to casual shooter. People looking for that have many other titles to play. I can't name a game released in the last decade that required a guide to finish like TR1-3 did. That is what made TR unique and fun. The developers need to play aim to recreate that in the 21st century. TR was always driven by the adventure, not Croft, too and they need to remember that.

Edit: I just saw that Tomb Raider got a higher metacritic score than Sleeping Dogs and Hitman: Absolution...that's bullshit! Both games I have beat twice and wouldn't complain about beating it again. Tomb Raider doesn't deserve a second play through, never mind three.
