First time placing a thermal paste.

Hello everyone!

Is it normal to have CPU Temp at 98 Celsius Degrees after placing Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste to the Processor Die? Opinions? Do you think the thermal paste is not in play yet? I am new to this by the way... :toast:

Im pretty sure AS5 needs multiple hours to cure. How did you apply it?

AS5 is pretty garbage these days too with Arctic Cooling MX2/3/4 performing better that doesn't have a cure time.

I used the bead method since I am not an overclocker.

AS5 is really a garbage? I saw a coolermaster thermal paste... Is that better than AS5?

No , thats not normal if your at stock speed

It is just not as good as other pastes out there. Its old, but people still stand by it, and I have no idea why.

I don't know. trying the cooler master paste is the only way to know.

And by bead method you mean putting just a dot, and then putting the cooler on top to let it spread?

That's what I do and I overclock lol. Not sure what you mean by that fact your not an overclocker. Not one method is tailored to overclocking then the other.

OMG, you don't use cardboard to spread Tim. Where did you hear that is the way to spread Tim? Just put a dot the size of a small pea in the center.

You do not have to cover the entire chip. The cores are at the center and pea size is perfect method.

Your chip won't fry from heat, as it has temperature protection characteristics where if it does hit a certain temperature the speeds of the chip will throttle down to maintain safe temperatures.

Power current is what fries chips.

And try another application, and just do a dot, but don't spread it yourself, instead just put the cooler on and let the pressure from the cooler spread the paste on its own. This way its less likely to be air bubbles, which trap the heat, and destroys the heat transfer.

Don't worry your CPU will throttle to protect itself and it will eventually shut down if things go too hot.
Just do it all over again (yes you have to if it's 90C). Put a little to the center (about size of a pea or just a little bit more) and it will spread towards the edges as pressure increases while you fasten things tight.

How is that normal? I have never seen a stock chip get that hot during idle or load, even with a paste that hasn't cured yet.

I said NOT NORMAL and AS5 only gains 2 or 3 degrees when it cures MX

I think it won't even go that high on idle even if you wouldn't use any paste at all. It's more likely that the sink is not fully in place.

oh and by the way it reached 98 degrees Celsius while playing. But if the CPU is idle, it will reach less than 65 degrees Celsius (lowest being 55 degrees Celsius). It's normal right?

what is IHS? If it's about Intel Heatsink, then yes... I am using a stock Heatsink from my processor

no CPU should reach that high.

You need to re-seat that heatsink on the Processor.

Steps of Applying Thermal Compound AS5 style

1 Remove Heatsink from CPU

2 Clean both the CPU and Heatsink removing all thermal compound using Isopropyl Alcohol

3 Apply a small Half/1 cook grain of rice amt of AS5 to the Center of the CPU IHS or Die.

4 For CPU Dies (No IHS) spread the compound out evenly over the entire Die Surface.
For IHS Either You can spread the compound out evenly or just put the heatsink on top of the compound.

5 Lightly pushdown on the heatsink and twist twice to 4 times then lock it into place.

Hmm Wait I tried using vertical sync in some games and the CPU did not heat up like up to 98C, i dunno why but maybe i think the I did not reseat the heatsink properly? So I will need to reseat the heatsink for sure right?

Yeah... It's unusual... I do not use vertical sync in some games cause I want high FPS LOL

VSYNC is a video card only function, to me it sounds like your CPU might be throttling back because of the temperature threshold its hitting.

Id recommend reseating the heatsink, bear in mind temperatures would be a lil higher but not 98 C

Anything above your screens refresh rate is candy. Keep vsync on unless the frames go below the refresh rate.

The difference is at most 5°C, hardly garbage. In fact the last review I saw showed AS5 outperforming MX4 when AS5 is applied properly and allowed to cure.

The problem is that AS5 is an extremely thick paste, so it is very hard to get applied in a thin enough layer.
