sounds like a bad PSU to me, swap it out and see if it sill happens.

An overheated cpu will generally just throttle, not shutdown.

OK now I am thinking we might be wrong about blaming the overheating for the shutdowns because I played both Far Cry 3 and Crysis 3 with the 6970 only and although it overheated like hell it never shut down today (the shutdowns happened yesterday and with crossfire enabled). And when I hit the record temperature of 86 it didn't shutdown or crash. But still this problem with the CPU has to be resolved no matter if it's causing the shutdowns or not. I have taken out the 6970 and I will play some mins with the 6950 only to see what happens. I'll write back.

Swap out the powersupply to cross it off the list.

WTF is wrong with this system?? I play Crysis 3 for 5 mins with the 6950 alone: CPU fan speed and temperature are NORMAL again with max cpu temp at 58 and suddenly:SHUTDOWN again.

Nope, it's not a cpu overheat problem. It can hold up for 15 mins at 86 degrees but can hold up 5 mins at 58? I don't think so...

So there might be something wrong with the 6950. Actually there is something wrong with both of them. One makes the CPU light on fire and the other shuts down the PC on cool temperatures.

I don't have another PSU to test it but I am certain it's not the problem here. So what do you make out of this madness?

I just bought this for 125 dollars. It's new and I can't afford a better one. Why do you insist it's the PSU? It is powerful enough for the system. What I understand is that the cards have the problem. When the 6950 is involved the shutdowns occur whether it's crossfire or single. The 6970 doesn't shutdown the pc but causes overheats to the cpu when in games.

PSUs are one of the most common problem with systems.

Its not uncommon of to get a bad one.

They are also one of the easiest to test.

you dont even need to take your old one out of the case..

just unplug the current connectors, and plug the new ones in with the unit outside the case. There are plenty of grounds on the ATX connector.

Based on all the posts youve made, its not your cpu overheating (typically they throttle, and do not shut down the system) , or the GPU overheating (typically the driver does a thermal reset and does not shut down the system).

the PSU is the most logical choice at this point, until you rule it out.

IF you rule it out, id next look at your memory (timing setups in bios, and error testing)

How is the airflow in your case? Your video card could be recycling heated air if the flow of air going into and out of your case is poor, even more so with the stock CPU cooler.

Lets get some pictures. As they say; a picture is worth 1000 words.

Edit: I hope it isn't something as simple as dust.

Just looked at it. Are you sure that the cooler isn't full of dust? How about a picture if the computer turned off and a nice close up of the cooler?

The last time I saw an AMD CPU hit those kinds of temperatures, the HSF was filled with dust and putting the CPU under load made the CPU temp jump to well over 70*C, same cooler.

i think that some of the unlocked shaders on your 6950 are actually defective, try to de-unlock it and see what that does(just switch to the second bios).

Aquinus it's not cpu. If you read all the comments you'll see. I still bet on a faulty 6950. I got it used from ebay and pre-unlocked. Besides the shutdown occurs only when it is involved.

It shuts down if throttling doesn't bring the CPU temp down fast enough, which dust likes to do.

Never mind then, if removing the 6950 does the trick you know what is to blame.

No it's not that dusty. I took it off and cleaned it a bit a few hours ago.

It doesn't really cause the 6970 overheats the cpu. Let's talk about that a little. Why does this happen?

I had a PSU overheating problem once (when I installed it right side up, when my case needs it installed up side down) and caused problems basically exactly the same problems you have.
