Interesting results from OCing stock XFX core 7950

So i got this vid card for 220 bucks right, and I think i'll research it a bit. I find out that the GPU over clocks really well. So i proceed to over clock it.

I stack my voltage to 1188 and clock to 1100 and ram to 1400. Works decent, but temps are way to high, 90s.

So I hack the stock cooler and jerry rig my arctic cooler from my 4890. I shim it up with a sleeve of copper since the gpu is recessed.

Initially my temps drop 20 degrees, but when I apply the same OC the results are not the same.

Now at 1150 mV, 1104 core, and 1500 Memory. 78 degrees temp

Another interesting note, I can increase my voltage to 1250 and core to 1150 with 1500 memory speeds and the card runs stable until it reaches 85 degrees in temp. Before, i was unable to go beyond 1880 mV

So my conclusion is:
- Using shims decreases the ability of your cooler to deal with higher bound temps.

Since my initial temps dropped 20 this is a little bit disappointing. I hoped that result would be reflected on the high end. It seems that the extra voltage required to break 1100 core barrier is beyond the capabilities of my arctic twin turbo cooler.

you're lucky if your core xfx or similar designs OC over 1000 with acceptable temps. Good luck guys!

Heh, my non-GHZ edition XFX 7970 doesn't get that hot, and it's still running the stock heat sink/thermal paste.

I have a sapphire 7950 boost and i got mine to oc up to 1130 core while never touching the volatages. Highest temp i got is 77c during crysis3. There must be something wrong with that card.

7950 boost = 1000 MHz.

XFX CORE = 800 MHz.

OC to 1100 for XFXcore ed. = nearly 40% OC

OC to 1100 for boost = 10%.

XFX "CORE" cards have the cheapest cooler possible, and the old stock 800 MHz clocks. No way to compare that to your newer, better-cooled card.

i have a XFX R7950DD clocked at 950/1400 i cant go higher but its allready 50/25mhz more thant the XFX R7950DD BE (i paid 260$ roughly for it) i wonder what core mV i need to go past xD

Well, you're safe up to 1.3 mVolts provided your temp stays safe. from my reading, anything below 85 is acceptable.

but i only needed 1.88 to get 1100+

also, ATI released a new bios that puts your cards core speed to 950, so really. you're at stock with 950 ;)

As Dave knows i can hit 1ghz and 1350 memory on stock voltages, and because of my noisy fan profile it never goes above 70 degrees.
Didnt touch core editions because of the crappy cooler.

for the last part : NOPE it isnt stock :800/1250 is stock on XFX R7950DD it doesnt have the boost bios (and i wont flash it since its a XFX, except ofc if i find a XFX bios with the "boost")

for the 1st part "wth?" safe upt to 1.3mV i understand but you write then " i only needed 1.88 (mV???)
