Sometime those mobo manuals are quite wrong and it looks like this was one of those times. If the cards needed it, then there's no way AMD wouldn't mention it.
They definitely don't need two to work. Question is if two result in better performance (in most cases the answer is no). Anyway let's wait for the crossfire fix at the end of the month and see if that actually fixes anything.
