Need pricing suggestion for recently built system that my folks dont want

Hey guys,

I just recently built an HTPC for my folks but they apparently cant use it. So, now i have to sell it. The problem is I do not know what is a reasonable price to ask. Here is the parts list:

The current OS is XBMCbuntu.

The system runs fine my folks just did not like the interface or controlling it with keyboard or phone. I plan to take the proceeds and get them a PS3 slim. Hopefully have a little left over for myself since I built the thing and bought the parts.

Personally, considering the parts cost $307 to buy today, and they are current offerings, I'd list the computer at $310 OBO, and would go no lower than $260.

Is that the only reason why they didn't like it? You could just get a HTPC remote for it and eliminate the need for a keyboard if this is just for media and to be used as a HTPC. Just my 2¢. Personally, I don't like using a keyboard on HTPCs either, so I can't say that I blame them.

I dont know where you did your math but even using multiple locations for best price minus taxes and shipping it comes out to ~390 USD just for parts. I just checked the prices. with shipping, ~393 USD

Opps, I missed the MB when putting the parts in my basket at newegg, my bad. But I'd still start by asking for what you paid for the parts and go from there.

I paid roughly 450 in parts originally.

Well, the way I see it, they were having problems connecting to the Media server to watch their movies and tv shows, and they had issues navigating using the remote software. If they use a PS3 solely for watching movies and tv shows from the server with the occasional DVD and BluRay disc, then I can get them the PS3 TV style remote control and hopefully call it a day. I also helped them wire the house with CAT5e and get a new router so hopefully their buffering and connection issues will go away.

Ha! no touch screen and the whole point of the HTPC was to connect to the media server and be as simple to use as possible. I have tweaked the OS settings and interface so that as soon as you turn it on, it POSTs, then boots straight into XBMC. Unless I'm mistaken, Win8 would boot to Win8, then after a bit load XBMC if it is in the startup folder. After loading XBMC, the window may not be full screen so.......yeah.

Ah you gave your rents ubuntu/linux, i don't blame them for not liking the interface lol, rather hard sometimes to get certain things to work if you haven't a clue what you're doing, which most don't with linux.

As for selling, the only problem i see with things priced at the same price as brand new is there's no logical reason for someone NOT to buy from newegg or wherever. As estore's offer garantee's backed by reputation, so i'd be much less inclined to purchase from a person for the same price.

Tho if you do sell for roughly the same price be sure to do your OBO like that

You seem to misunderstand, I gave the xbmcbuntu. Not stock Ubuntu. My mother and father use Ubuntu on a daily basis on their laptops so the interface Ubuntu provides is not the issue.
Also, I do not anticipate trying to sell for the price I paid in parts. Plus, the system has full manufacturer warranties as well. This is no HP/Del etc with 1 year warranties. I picked the parts and built it myself. I am an A+ certified tech, I have built many systems. I'm no cadaveca, but I build modest systems that have yet to fail. There have been build issues where an ordered part was DOA, but I have not trashed a system.

Also, to answer your question Wriggly, yes the ps3 remote would have been the cheapest, reliable remote. Xbmc works flawlessly with a MS Media center remote but those routinely go to 100$.

Your option on a PS3 for who ? your parents hehe. come on. Get them a Roku 3 and if they need a DVD\bray player get a USB one for it just check it's compatible 1st.

PS3 has barely any apps for it too were the ROKU 3 has frigging loads and take 3.2w to run even when running hi def movies were as the PS3 Slim has a 90w power usage.

They have no internet so there is no Netflix etc. Just the setup for streaming in-house from media server PC to TVs. There are 3 TVs in-house. 1 is a Smart TV, the other 2 are not. Id rather get them a system that can smoothly connect to and stream from the Media server and it would be a bonus if it could play BluRays. They are not home often so they only would run the system maybe once or twice a week. The power draw really is not an issue.

You can get the remotes second had in great condition for $20-$25 from GS and even cheaper on ebay if you don't mind waiting.

Well if i had known that ..

The SONY remote is real good to use just don't leave it around or the PS3 will get turned on by accident. There is a version 2 of it now don't know how good that one is but it has volume controls too.
