GPU Upgrade Question

Hi, guys

My current GPU is a MSI HD6950 2Gb OC/Power with the Twin Frozr III cooler. I'm running at a resolution of 1920 x 1080. I've had the card since April of 2011.

Recently i've been debating whether to upgrade or not. The GTX 760 and 770 have both caught my eye. Now, I like to have as much eye candy on as possible while still maintaining a reasonably high framerate; ie. as close to 60 fps as possible.

Would either of these cards be a solid upgrade from what i'm currently running?

Or, would I be better off waiting till the next gen cards launch later in the year/ next year?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

770 should fit the bill. 7970 as well.

Upgrade if you need to. If your 6950 isn't cutting it with the games/apps you play now is a better time than any to upgrade.

Check out the review section for the 760 and 770 to see which one you would want and/or if the price is worth it to go with one over the other.

I can normally run my 6970 with 2-4 AA with max other details ( except COH2 the snow makes shit lag ) so for me at least going wait till i cannot add AA to games then the upgrade would be more worthy.

How ever with you having 6950 your time might be coming a little sooner. I am waiting for the 9 series.

Dunno if he wants to look at 6970 crossfire on the cheap if hes got the power supply. My 6970 xfire ran pretty good.

But yeah gtx770 or 7970 would be the go.

You have many choices as other guys said

Like 7950/7970 from red team or 670/770/780 from green team

Given the pricing, right now the GTX 770 or HD7970 (or overclock a HD7950) are the cards to get for that resolution imo. I wouldn't crossfire your current card as it is getting older and there is only so much worth in doubling up old cards.

Thanks for all the input guys. Typically i've always run a single card, seemed to me that crossfire or sli introduces its own set of problems. With that in mind, i've usually kept my purchase around the $300 range. My previous card was an HD 4870 512Mb. The 6950 seemed like a logical upgrade. This time around it just seems like a more difficult choice.

If amd doesn't release their next cards in the next month or so i may jump on a GTX 770. Adaptive vsync, GPU Boost 2.0, TXAA and the GeForce experience software interest me. It just doesn't seem like AMD has anything similar at the moment.

Also one more question. For the resolution i'm running at, 1920x1080, is a gtx 760 not a big enough upgrade to even consider?

I don't believe the 760 is enough, maybe without the eye candy but I highly doubt it. I am in the same boat as youbut iI think iI will try and wait at least another month or so if I don't hear anything about the next amd cards I am going to the 780

You will gain on average 30% more performance at 1080p with the GTX760 which is a good performance boost for $249. Cheaper then that actually if you sell the 6950.

The graph below does not have 6950 in it, but its right around 7850 performance if not a little bit less. So take a look at that.

I hate to be the one to do this but 100 % over 69 % is actually around 45% more performance and 69% from 100% is 31% less performance.

So, I decided to go with the MSI 760 and just my luck, newegg sell out of em right before i order. Guess its just a waiting game till they're back in stock.

They came back in stock last night, so i jumped on one. If it works out good, I may grab a second for SLI, but that's for later.
