The game can get pretty competitive and its a matter of how serious you, your team and your commander are.

Indeed, he is right. I have trouble playing ns2 anymore unless I am with the right set of people. I don't care if I am losing but ns2 is a team game and must be played as such. Much more fun that way too. To get as good as the pros takes hundreds of hours though. They all have 1000+ game hours. I myself am only at 450.

If I can tear myself away from my crippling DOTA addiction, I may pop in and do some NS2. I own the game but haven't played much. It's pretty fun, but when I was playing it I had a crappy Toshiba HDTV as my monitor and it was too laggy for FPS games.

I updated the OP with more recent and relevant links to videos and what not. I put in the two trailers on the thread so they are watchable without going to youtube. I added my take on the game. I also recommended specs because I feel the recommended specs should be higher.

The game made it to #5 on steams top sellers during the free weekend.

Choose from one of three classes (Assault, Support and Scout), each with their own unique abilities and work together to escape from the clutches of the alien horde.

A builder weapon for the marines to allow creation of outposts.

That is another great thing about ns2. You buy one game but get access to what is only a few mods at the moment, but more are coming.
New maps with story-based progression.
Difficulty scaling with the number of players and friendly bots making the game suitable as a single player experience.

That is funny you say that. The general community consensus is that marines are easier at first to play because people are used to the play style compared to aliens.

The global statistics are almost exactly 50/50 on who wins. In my experience though, aliens win more too. I could go a bit more on strategy and why I think aliens win more but I think it is moot.

I will make sure you know of the next sale. Should be another one soon but will probably be $12.50. They are going to do a another content release here with the new map biodome. They have in the past done a 50% off sale and a free weekend for such things.

I like its game engine. It's fast and looks daaaaamn good. I wish they'd remake System Shock 2 with it, it just feels appropriate.

I really wanted to get into this game, bought it in the pre-order aswell. But no matter how much I try, the gameplay just feels too clunky. Its not that the fps is too low, or too stuttery, but the mechanics of the creatures/marines you can play just dont feel natural to me. Its sad!
The only thing I really enjoy is playing the alien commander =D

For me everything feels fine, just like in any good FPS game, only thing that's really pissing me off is the aliens ceiling walking, where view is not rotated, but the player model is.

I'm old school, used to the Aliens movement in Aliens vs Predator. Some said it's disorienting to move as alien, but it felt natural for me and i miss that. I miss the feel of hanging of the ceiling before attacking the poor marines. Always being horizontal to the ground without rotating the view is for me more disorienting...

But other than that, i like the game a lot. So much that i bought a headset with mic just because of this game, so i can command my team with mic which is much easier.

My favorite creatures are Lerk and Fade and with marines it's Grenade+Jetpack or the almighty dual chaingun exo (single one isn't bad either, so you can face punch aliens with the mechanical fist).
