My kids are even into it now too. They tell me how just about all their online friends in the console arena are also building PC's and doing PC gaming too.

That happens at the end of every console cycle and every "surge" in desktop sales has been smaller each time.

Agreed! However, us niche people and PC gaming builders are not part of that generic desktop market, which I absolutely agree is declining in sales.

Speaking on pc things anyone notice the price fixing on ram lately.
I paid 25-30 $ for my kit now its $75

platter hard drive prices are down surprisingly.

There was a report not long ago that the DDR3 warehouse stockpiles were not selling, so the guys in the report said "we haf no choice but to increase price because nobody is buying them" < salesman logic right there.

People play flash games because they're at work/school/home on their average computer of average age and the games don't require a dedicated GPU, which is generally what they're made for. Even a lot of indie games run great on these systems, being popularized by Steam and Humble Bundles. Even then, these average computers can still do well in current games by simply throwing in a GPU and some extra memory.

imho, people generally haven't had a genuine "wtf my computer is slow" feeling since the Pentium 4 HT / Athlon 64 days. Anything Core 2 Duo or better still feels quick by today's standards and, as others have mentioned, run the latest operating systems rather quickly. Heck, my dad was happy with his 1.6 GHz Socket A Duron running Windows 7 for the longest time. I got him a computer to replace it (one that someone else was throwing out because it was running slowly), but he didn't switch until his motherboard died.

While volunteering at an electronics recycler a while back, we'd have people come in saying they had no money and that they needed a PC to help them write resumes so that they could get back on their feet. We'd say "Sure! How about this 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 with 512 MB of ram and Windows XP?" and they'd go "Oh, no, that's okay. Thanks though." and leave, the "higher end" stuff being socket 775 P4s.

Unfortunately, the only time I've seen an average user throw out a PC is when they've royally messed up the OS with either malware or system "optimizers". They take it to Geek Squad (salesmen in geek's clothing) who instantly tells them it can't be fixed and directs them to their showroom floor. I'm sure plenty of us have fixed tons of "unfixable" computers by mashing F12 and booting to the recovery partition. In this sense, we are contributing to this problem.

I guess the main issue is we've hit that "fast enough" speed a while back. As others have said, the big thing now seems to be tablets, both in the usability sense and in the "we don't have the technology to make these things 'fast enough' yet" sense. I suspect we'll be seeing a similar "too slow, throw it out" trend with tablets in which case these manufacturers need to transition from PCs to tablets, similar to the transition from carriage to car.

tl;dr, manufacturers need to adapt to survive and stop blaming us for not buying in.

I doubt this will have much impact on gaming hardware. Gaming is a huge industry now and has even eclipsed the movie industry. At best it will just mean slightly less cheap name brand internet desktops being made and more tablets being made.

The type of hardware our gaming rigs use is not at all the same as net PCs, except for maybe optical drives, HDDs, etc. I doubt we'll even see a raise in gaming hardware prices. The manufacturers will just get smart and adapt to a changing market for the mainstream net consumers.

Borrowed a Dell laptop for a few days for some work in another town, i7 and 650M, 1080p. It weighed like a ton, got hot pretty fast and you had to be sure you are always near a power outlet. I had a mouse with me otherwise Win 8 with the touchpad is a nightmare (for me at least). Plus I'm sure it costs a lot.

I did some excell, word, mails, internet stuff, power point and HD documentary film screening and large file transfers.

The secret for the PC business to come back to life is to able to do all those things and then some on a much lighter, cooler, easier to operate device with a reasonable battery life at an affordable price.

The home desktop is going away. The work desktop will probably stay around for a long time but most places have their employees use laptops so that they can work from home if need be. The only real use for a powerful desktop these days is for graphically intensive applications like games. You may think that you rendering video/etc also has a place on the desktop but you would be incorrect as more and more places are offloading graphic renderings to server farms. So yea, us PC gamers will be the last holdouts.
PC gaming is booming though and there's no sign of that stopping. Integrated GPUs are growing in power to fuel that boom too.

PC gaming is booming but watch as those sales numbers crash once PS4 and XB1 are released.

I think 4K is actually going to be what drives most new PC upgrades.

this is definitely going to be one of the driving factors.

I doubt it. Many people bought the first wave of "HD-Ready" TVs, only to find out that when HD content was available, their TV wasn't actually HD-capable.

4K panels will get the same reception as 3D TVs. It'll just be a fad until they are sub-$750 USD for a 45-inch panel. That is far off still.

Console release will spur PC sales for gaming as well, since a lot of "AAA" content is being reserved for the new consoles. HSA-based rendering engines also need to come out...

Really, excess income in the US is on the rebound, as reported in that article, but the rest of the globe is seeing a retraction in economic factors that might prevent the market from capitalizing on the potential there is. Smartphones and a lack of content that needs more power killed PCs, and that aspect isn't going to change ANY time soon.

Computers had "HD Ready" content long before HD TVs existed. A sufficiently powerful computer can render virtually anything at 4K resolutions.

The vast majority of people around the world need only a device that has the ability to connect to the internet and to process relatively well and for-all-to-get-it-how-it-works, what the service providers offer to the end users.

hand held portable devices are so popular they will soon outnumber the population of the world... crazy boom in video technology as costs drop and speed/quality of image increase we see phones with better screens than even existed in any medium only a few years ago,

today's teens in western world are Internet dependent and most have cell phone...
so how does this relate??? Remember these teens are tomorrows business leaders and drivers

Pcs are today's tube tvs... they are useful, just old technology..
when my tablet streams to my wall panel and I get faster better cheaper games movies etc...
the need for the pc diminishes... same in the office... tablets and phones and cloud based devices not replacing pc today, but supplementing them...
I own smart phone and iPhone and ipad and nice Sony large laptop, and reasonably fast pc...
The ease of use of the smaller devices is creating a gap for me where I don't need to sit at my desk as I am now.... and soon the processing power will make mute all the arguments that "only pcs can do X"
I do love my pc... but Im also realizing the usefullness of the next wave....

Not really. A single 7970 can just barely play games at that res, and the same is true for NV cards, although obviously they have an advantage. The cost of ownership of 4k is a huge factor in consumer adoption, and the panels AND the hardware to push it have to be much lower priced before wide-spread adoption. That's still at least a couple of years out.

The vast majority of people around the world need only a device that has the ability to connect to the internet and to process relatively well and for-all-to-get-it-how-it-works, what the service providers offer to the end users.

Sure, although if there is content that users want, they will get it, one way or another. The sad truth is that the amount of content that will push users to other devices is greatly lacking. Which is the same story with 4k panels...you need video that will display in 4k. The slow adoption of BluRay-based content, 3-D content, and 1080P HD content, in succession, indicates that 4k still has many years left before it's really a feasible technology to motivate consumers to purchase.

The thing I've never liked about laptops or smartphones is that you can't just open them up and upgrade the motherboard or CPU because of whatever reasons why you want to do that... everything is just too damm small, highly proprietary and besides they don't sell upgradable cpus or motherboards for these mobile devices. Such a fickle market...

When you bought a laptop of smartphone, you are stuck with whatever computing power it has.. thats it.. end of story. You don't like it, tough! chuck it out and BUY another one...lol....

I love being able to pop the side of my PC gaming rig and fiddle around if I think something hardware wise needs upgrading or whatever... They won't take that away from me! Noooooo! :)

To say that pc's will go the way of tablets is a little extreme I believe. Unless we see some huge drastic improvement in battery life, cpu architecture, and a big step up in graphical performance the pc will never go away. Look at your everyday life. The websites, movies, music, photo editing, ... could go on and on.... need to have the ability to stand up to these needs and right now and in the forseable future tablets will not fill this need. So yes there is a decline as the there are way more average users that power users. Another reason is from my exp in a coporation enviornment. few years ago one monitor was more than enough. Now I see a standard of 2 monitors to a computer with 3 becoming more prevailent in a corperate enviornment enabling more productive multitasking.
So as that being said yes sales are down for the average users but the need for more power is growing. Editing programs are requiring more and more power. not less. I dont see computers going away unless they figure out away to work these programs on tablets. Speaking of which look at all the remote workers now a days. These guys use mobile phone tablets and phablets to do what they can but at the end of the day when they need to get work done, omg here it comes, they have a desktop or laptop.

People do realise this report is about prebuilt PC's right, and not shipment of individual components? This isnt going to take into account custom made rigs...

Yep, very good point. I read about this elsewhere and, without reading the actual source material as I can't be bothered, I can only assume that they're taking figures from companies such as Dell, Acer, PC World and the like. The average PC user is now having his or her head turned to cheaper and more mobile alternatives for lightweight use such as Farcebook and Twatter, why have a bulky PC taking up real estate in the lounge when you can throw the tablet down the side of the sofa when you've just told 450 people who don't really care about you that you're off to take a dump?

If figures from places such as PC Specialist, SCAN, Overclockers (bleugh) etc who cater to the PC enthusiast were taken into account I'm pretty sure it would tell a different story. In fact if this side of the market was reported separately I'd bet there was actually an increase in sales. Then add on the custom builders who actually build their own custom PCs...

People had XP running on 10 year old machines because it ran well, many households were just buying PC's at the time so sales were good because of that.
PC sales went down after XP had been out for a very very long time, and Vista was on its way.
Vista came out, and nobody's PC bar the enthusiasts of the time could run the damn thing properly, so there was huge demand for PC hardware improvements in household systems.
Now we're back with Win7/8 which run wonderfully on household PC's, therefore there is no reason for domestic users to buy a new PC from their local ripoff dealer because their system still runs fassbook.
Bring out a domestic piece of software that runs like crap on household dualcores, and you're PC sales will go up again. Ebay, Fassbook, Twitter - Make it run like sh*t, and the PC sales will go up again...

??/ There was nothing wrong with Vista. I was a resource hog and they got that fixed.

10 year old PC's??? Now I am laughing. 10 year old PC users were and are ones who point blank cannot afford one past and present. This is pretty much the home user anyhow..... The problem is tablets and hand helds. Everyone is buying a tablet. If tablets and hand held phones did not exist, the PC market would be down pretty much according to the economy. How many 10 year old PC's do you see in the job market?

In the past 5 years, businesses could buy an adequate PC for under $300. That was NOT the case 10 years ago. If you could find anything close, the performance was shit. Today( and up to 5 years or so), $300 and under can get a business a very worthy computer and now you can get more mileage out of the box compared to yesteryear.

Even funnier, where do you get making software and facebook run like shit. Are you making things up? If companies did this there would be class action lawsuits all over the place.

All these ass writers do not take consideration how many tablets and handheld are produced and they do not include the new technology in economic figures. They pray on poor Intel losing marketshare and who gives a ratts ass. Technology has change and the PC will never be the PC again. Time for all the writing ass turds to get over this. Until CPU technology takes a major turn. people will have there current PC longer than many years in the past. Intels and AMDs loss is other companies gains ATM. The industry has shifted and probably will never be the same due to technology.

Less than 5%(probably less than 2%) of the market are individual components. The vast majority are Pre Builts so individual components won't push the bar either way.

Pc's since I've been alive have basically been the testbed for products that would later be added to the home usually in the form of entertainment....PC users are basically BETA testers for new tech...

But now you can carry all of that in a pouch or in your pocket for about $200 or less...
PC's are no longer in BETA development, SMART devices are...follow the trend like good little sheep.
