best way to cool an older 9400 quad chip that has one hot core?

Per the very nice free program, here of course, "real temp"... I am running one pretty high core in my core 2 quad 9400 chip... it idles fine but stressed its up in the 60's c.... I found some of my old cooling parts.. is water overkill as this is not an oc cpu? I think maybe an inexpensive air system, currently only has factory air.. ho hum

thoughts?

could just be that one core is working harder. most any air cooler that's aftermarket should be better than the stock intel cooler. The LGA775 factory coolers were terrible. And considering how old the cpu is, i'm sure the cpu thermal grease is dried up and worthless by now.

I'm cooling my q8200 with an old CM aquagate r80 with 2 fans, but the CM212 evo should be ok.

I am measuring the case area now.. Im deleating a bunch of crap... old ir reader cards and such.. but its full of capacitors and a mb heatsink and then there are the chips.. hoping to get an exact specs before I buy it, but its only 30 on sale at microcenter....
if my pc was pristine Id sell it and start a fresh build, tough to sell when case looks like I rolled it down the stairs, oops.. surprising it still runs!
ok, back to my evo 212.. that should also tide me over pre water on the new fall winter build...
Ive got a decent self made wet system...

it probably needs to be lapped to even out the temps. that was a common problem back in those days.

the 212 is a monster...
I only got it for the bridge time to the new build this fall... and my case well its an open "vented case" an it definitely will be sticking out the side

what a nightmare.. the system refused to recognize the new fan.. giving me the f u of death and telling me it was shutting down to protect the cpu! good grief.. i faked it with the old fan.. now no idea if this is an onging issue as I am afraid to turn it off

if you dont think the 212 evo wont fit, try the hyper tx3 evo.

someone should have mentioned it earlier (or you should have specified) but if your mobo has no option to disable the 'fan failed' alarm in BIOS, you're likely gunna need a fan with an RPM wire that gives a high enough reading to keep the board happy.

Ok it failed the new card, which had worked fine thee new cooler and no case fan
So now after letting it warm up it cycles fine.. No changes I pulled that old CPU fan garbage off ... Looks like fankensteins hoe too, wires and case open

I spent the last two hours last night playing bios upgrades and trying to get the fan to blow hard.. Even at stress it's keeping things cool.... I have a LOUD old high volume fan from yesterday that I may add with a controller .. Found some folks OC the board with clock gen and another program..
At least it's not overheating yet

So I'm running a switched high capacity 120 mm on the 212 and the nice mc fan on/off as I cannot get bios to set speeds yet
It's ugly and loud when it needs to be, I'm chocking on having to by a new os if I replace the mobo

while suggested, sure, you don't need a new OS for a board swap. Remove all the drivers before tearing down the rig, install new board, boot, and install new drivers.

Unless this is an OEM built PC! a retail windows install will allow this, OEM is way more likely to fight you with new hardware.

This old pos is Oem, HP, my other dead system has ancient win XP and I probably want to go to a new build as prices are amazing now... Looks like a winter rebuild
UNLESS I can figure out how to punt the mobo without changing operating sys... I've an old Asus p5k with Ddr3 slots, and new 775 form mobo can be had for around 40$ mem on sale at 60 for 2x4gig set of ok memory ddr3, so if I could avoid the microscrewjob I would probably get a new board today

no worries, Im doing two things... planning a new build.. any suggestions on operating sys?
and I massively cooling my cpu, dropping it down over 10 c on idle with a now operating, albeit left handedly, fan system....
I tried to even add the opposing puller fan but the bottom of the case is there... Im looking at swaping the current systemsystem into my old huge, full size case.. lol

its easily double the volume...
so.. cooler cpu done 35$,.... learning how to play cpu and mobo doctor, priceless

I just ran a test " battle" maxed out setting lots of troops in total war Shogun, I exited to windows, the temps where the old idle temps... nice having a good functional cpu cooler fan setup hats off to CM 212 evo...
