Gainward 780 GLH issue.

So I've just installed my 2 brand new Gainward GLH 780's. The SLI bridge wasn't long enough so they both aren't in use atm Only 1. Don't panic I've ordered a bigger one in the mail already

The heatsink on my CPU is too large and I had to put the cards in PCI-E slots 2 and 4 instead of 1 and 3.

The issue I have is that the bottom card in slot 4 seems to be the primary and putting out the display and not the one in slot 2 is not, which you would think would be the primary.

What have I done wrong here? I'd google it, but I think my question is a bit too long to be google searched.

(On an offtopic note. 1 single 780 owns, FPS wise my 2 7970s xD)

It's the way the board is setup. 1st card needs to be in the 1st slot. 2nd card needs to be in the 4th slot (3rd PCI-E x16 slot)

How badly is performance affected? I can cram the card into the first slot. But it touches the CPU heatsink

You don't want bare pcb components touching another metal part. I think.

You can put some kind of insulator in between,just make sure its not some thing that could melt at 50-90c.

Watercool the CPU with an AIO watercooler, maybe that would solve the heatsink touching the PCB of the graphics card?

Not into water cooling. Maybe I should get a smaller heatsink.

What sort of air cooler should I get? The i7 3930k didn't come with a stock one.

He is referring to AIO water coolers. Things like Corsair/Antec/and now CM.
These things are pretty much maintenance free these days, apart from cleaning out the dust from the rad which you have to do with air coolers anyway.

Is the circle thing what goes on the CPU and the fan what cools the water?

Yes, the "circle thing" is the water pump and CPU water block in one, and the fan is attached to the radiator. You can also purchase an additional fan to mount on the other side of the radiator as well for what is known as a "push/pull" configuration which will increase the cooling capabilities of the unit.
