Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia Phones...

Now that Microsoft effectively owns Nokia's cellphone business, do you think this move will help them gain significant market share vs. iPhone and Android?

Hard to tell, but probably not. Unless they can make the Nokia phones super cheap without compromising quality. I think they will dissolve the Nokia brand name, cause Nokia as other stuff that wasnt bought by Microsoft.
too bad. youngsters would never know what a good phone really feels like and that expensive stuff doesnt have to be brittle
and if its got a Nokia logo on it, it can be dropped from a cliff....

maybe yes since nokia is old player so Ms wont sweat much to blend the os and the hardware. and its easier to do when everything under one command (Ms)
but if Ms too confident, it may give them a great disaster too
but my own opinion that would hard. nokia has lost market share and android has many option from hardware and brand, apple still strong

The Nokia brand is still owned by Nokia, MS only license it (10 years iirc), and it's still a strong name in certain parts of the world. And unless all engineers quit because national pride operations will more or less stay the same. Also there are good, solid phones that are not Nokias out there.

It depends on what you mean with "significant". But Windows Phone will grow, that I'm certain of.

EDIT: BTW, the poll options are stupid. Genius, bad, conspiracy or meh. I think it's a good move and given the current situation it's almost a win-win, but it's not genius.

Budget smartphones firmly belong to the Nokiasoft imo, barring Nexus 4. I cannot see good devices around the £100-150 mark from either Android or Apple. Even in high end as long as you are willing to forgo some gaming Microsoft's ecosystem is quite adequate.

and frick, i have seen the construction of some phones, i wouldnt call using double sided tissue tape to hold a phone together a good idea at all. more and more people seem to be doing this.

The key word is "some". There are solid phones that are not Nokias out there, Sony's are generally quite solid. Also you can buy covers.

Waited for my Sony Ericsson phone to die on me for 4 years, it didn't so I went ahead and bought Nexus 4 anyway. Its a good phone, and battery lasts for a week. I miss 1 week batteries

In the tech world, it's follow the leader. Apple sells hardware and software... Google buys Motorla Mobility to do the same. Microsoft buys Nokia to do the same.

Has it helped Google? Not much so far, but it was a longish term play.

Will it accelerate the adoption of windows phones? It may. MS is moving towards a hardware/software solution like the other two in the mobility space, God only knows if they can execute and see a payoff.

I never got meme's in general, they just get recycled and cannibalised until they arent funny and are incredibly watered down by repeated use by teenagers on fassbook.
It is correct however, I still have a Nokia from 2000, and IT STILL FREAKING WORKS. Battery sucks though. Also have a BT CellNet phone that still works. It didnt text.

I dont expect Nokia's typical performance when inbred with Microsoft though. They're going to make a handset that follows trends and design recommendations, not a handset that you can drive over with a tank, whilst making a telephone conversation.

And I have an Ericsson from the 80's that still work. Last year I threw away some fully functional random phones from 2000/01. Everything was simpler and more solid back then.

Actually its quite common. They don't have the same features, speed or performance available from other brands. Just because you and your friends like them doesn't mean the rest of the world tosses them in the bin were they belong

Nokia is not what it used to be anymore, ever since my first nokia "a 3310" iv'e always had them (around 6) but what really killed it for me was the N8, it had a slow CPU, crappy symbian OS that just keeps crashing and the phone literally fell apart even with careful use and the only redeeming feature about it was the camera, it doesn't have the same old "quality" anymore.

That's why i transitioned to android and i'm sticking to it, but that's just my opinion on the matter.

IMHO, MicroSoft has turned a corner. Burned the bridge back. Now are facing a cliff. The Nokia deal? Perhaps they want to... not go down alone.
