And Stella is oficially street legal within the Netherlands!
Okay, any commercial version that might be made in future (in, say, 10 years) will need to meet more "heavy" requirements, but still... :D :rockout: :toast:

@SolarEHV (Twitter) said:
Stella mag officieel de openbare weg op: De RDW heeft haar goedgekeurd! Volledig ingepakt, klaar om te gaan! #wsc2013

Liberal translation: Stella is officially allowed access to public roads: the National Service for Road Trafic (NSRT) gave a permit. Fully packed and ready to go! #WSC2013

Hidden Valley Testing Day

1 Oct 2013

After several successful test days at the Cox Peninsula Road, the team and Stella continued testing at Hidden Valley: the circuit, several hundred meters from Kormilda College, on which amongst others the qualifying of the World Solar Challenge will take place. Here we would first have a small media event, along with the cars of co-Cruiser-Class-participants from Germany and Australia. In the afternoon, we would start our first day of testing on an official Australian circuit.

This was the ideal time for the team's three drivers (Jeffrey, Aron and Jordy) to inspect the circuit for the qualifying round. Who will drive during this event? At this moment no decission has been made yet, but of course we will let you know when it is decided.

That driving on a race track is very different compared to driving in the outback, most of the people already knew, but this became clearly once again today: taking turns with squeaking tires (resulting in the smell of burnt rubber) and amongst others engine temperatures which were higher than normal. All in all it was a useful afternoon, during which much information could be gathered.

Information, not only on Stella's performance on the racetrack, but also our competitors. Almost all teams were present today and part of the team made extensive use of this occasion to go and visit a number of the other teams and study their cars.

The mutual interest between the attendees was large. Similarly, there were many people along the road to catch a glimpse of Stella : "It's such a special feeling when people on the side of the track are all taking pictures or are waving when you drive by. You almost feel like a celebrity.", Karin was already joking.

Next Thursday, Stella and her passenger will be inspected once more. While for many teams this leads to long and stressful nights to get everything ready, the atmosphere at Solar Team Eindhoven is reasonably relaxed. Therefore there was time for a lunch on location with the whole team, leading to beautiful images.

Stella is ready , the team is ready , late Thursday come!

LOL

Is this pic mag-worthy enough?

My sister one of the people involved with the aerodynamics, indeed.

I do not know. The actual race did not start yet, and a lot can happen during the 3000km trip. Especially in the heat of the dessert (potential reliabilit issues). They prepared well though, I hope so we'll see.
BTW, I think some of the Challenger cars did not go to the max in order to avoid risking damage to them (they are not really made for making turns, and tend to do better on a road than a racing track). That may have influenced the outcomes of the qualification.

I forgot to post this:

Update Day 1 WSC

6 Oct 2013

She is off! After an amazing qualification on the track in Darwin Stella, world's first solar powered family car took pole position at the start line this morning. The team had the great honor to drive out of Darwin first and they showed they are worth it. For a few hours, Stella drove first till she was taken over by the Dutch colleagues of Twente and Eindhoven. Number 1 in the cruiser class and 1 and 2 in the challenger class, as some would say: It ain't much, if it ain't Dutch!

Solar Team Eindhoven continued the journey and during the afternoon they were the only team to drive with three people. This caused a little slower speed, thus just before the end of the day Minnesota took the time lead. They are followed by Einhoven on a one minute gap and by Bochum that is one minute further behind. However, this does not mean that Minnesota also is 'the virtual leader', because the number of passengers is also part of the scoring formula.

Solar Team Eindhoven is looking forward to tomorrow, when the first stage of the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge will finish. Probably, it will stay a close battle between the three teams at the lead, but the team has all confidence in Stella.

The blog post of day 2 does not seem to be available in English, day 3 is not finished yet.

They finished at the End of Timing point at 13:03 local time, and will drive into Adelaide. This weekend the jury will make a verdict on the final standings in their class.

They won't bring it to market; it might do so in a more refined form in a decade or so. It is for science (thru competition) and for gaining prestige for their respective university.
And compared to (most) other solar EVs it already is quite practical. It is the first freaking fourseater to complete the World Solar Challenge without trailering it a single ångström (i.e. 0.1 nanometer), and I only know 8 solar EVS that have something like a baggage compartiment.
Yes, the car probably needs to get a bit higher (to get in and out more easily), airco/heating are not added in the current prototype, maybe consumers might like a bigger battery and it may need some extra crumple zones if it hasn't got those already. But that does not give you a right to be so unconstructive.

Stella --> Solar Team Eindhoven
"Stella" is Latin for "star" (the sun is a star)
"Stella" is a given name for females, emphasising the "family character" of the car.

There is no association with Stella Artois or any other beer brand. BTW, Subaru (a car brand) also has used the name "Stella" in some markets.

Looking at the original post first image, I don't see any butterfaces, then again the res is quite low.
