2560x1440 27" Monitor Advice

Hi,

I'm looking at upgrading my monitor. I'm after a 1440 27" monitor that's good for gaming (e.g. BF4) and movies. I'll be upgrading my GFX card soon to a AMD Radeon R9 290X (once non reference coolers come out) or a GTX 780 (depending on a price drop).

At the moment I'm looking at these two monitors...

Iiyama Prolite XB2779QS-S 27" AH-IPS Professional Widescreen LED Monitor

Asus PB278Q 27-inch

Both are £440 which is about $710 USD

I can't seem to find a decent review of the Iiyama monitor but the specs look right and TBH I love the way it looks!

Does any one have any experience with the Iiyama? I'm a bit concerned by the the response rate but as far as I can tell those numbers are made up by the companies for marketing! I'm open to other suggestions around that price range. I know about the cheap Korean models that are available but am a bit too paranoid to take the risk and would also prefer the extra bezel quality etc.

Any advice appreciated!

Why not go on fleabay and order a Korean IPS monitor? Way cheaper, and many users on here have them. PerfectPixel and Catleap etc. Go ahead and ask around.

Unless you happen to have plenty of cash and/or "warranty service" peace-of-mind is one of the most important things you definitely should buy a QNIX or X-Star Samsung PLS on eBay or ipsledmonitors.com (if in the States).

You are very right when you say that it's "made up". They usually just put the grey to grey response time (which is the fastest) while others can be (and they are on all screens) much higher (10-25ms).
Another very important thing (especially if used for gaming) is input lag.

I strongly suggest going to tftcentral (http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews.htm) and check the comparisons and the reviews (AFAIK they have a review of both the Iiyama and the ASUS + the likes of Dell, Benq, HP etc.), you will find all the answers there (response time, backlight bleed, input lag, colour accuracy etc.).

Wow, I looked into these ages ago but decided against it at the time. Forgot how cheap they actually are!

Is there a general consensus between which is better between the QNIX or X-Star Samsung PLS.

Anyone used accessorieswhole on ebay?

I hav the Asus PB278Q and it is a really nice monitor, no issues whatsoever, and the stand is the best I've ever had, as is the array of inputs.

having said that I saw a deal pop up recently for a 120Hz monitor with all other specs the same as the Asus bar inputs (one DVI) from a noname brand and I am very tempted after seeing it in action, the panel looks just as good, if not better because of 120Hz capability.

For reference the Asus cost me 625 AUD and now they are 595, and this nonname jobbie is $320

X-Star and QNIX are the same except for the name. Yeah AccessoriesWhole is a good one. Or hulustar or greensum offhand. Stay away from dreamseller and red-cap.

Not only are these PLS panels really nice in terms of color, contrast and overall IQ (Samsung claims "like IPS but better" and I tend to agree) but like all of them also do at least 96Hz.

Right on and yeah...you might have to pay some duty in the UK. There are two huge threads on these displays at overclock.net in Displays section. The first post of the PLS Club thread has a ton of general info and a FAQ and all that. Most of these have come with no dead pixels (though some guys with like 3 even are not even really bothered; location matters though) but the relative shoddy construction/installation of the inside frame and/or bezel can cause some backlight bleed, bad on some. The good news is that it can be fixed by the user.

560Ti, Battlefield 4 and 2560x1440 unless you want to play on low quality settings and/or low framerate you should conssider an upgrade to the GPU first.
I`m using a 1440p U2713HM since spring, and honestly i would choose a 1080p IPS or VA panel if i were to choose again.

Oh agreed re. GPU upgrade for AAA games. I am getting a second 7950 eventually.

660 x 2 here and i have to disable AA or high res textures in games like BF4 Beta, Bioshock Infinite or Crysis 3 due to vRAM usage rising above 1.5 and a general lack of consistent frame rates near 60.
So if you want 60 fps and high settings go 1080p or upgrade

I'm picking up a QNIX from an Amazon reseller since I want to have them as a backup in case something goes south with the vendor. As someone else stated the QNIX and X-Star are literally the same monitor with a different badge, so neither is better than the other. A couple other things to consider:

1) Get a SquareTrade warranty in case something goes wrong. If you have to ship the monitor back to the manufacturer it will cost you more than you paid for the monitor (or close). SquareTrade covers it for 3 years and will just send you a check for the value.

2) Be prepared to open the shell and adjust the panel if you have backlight bleed, the panel does not sit very well in the cheap bezel and most bleed can be fixed with some electrical tape to make it fit more snugly (see the guides on youtube or other forums).

3) Make sure your video card supports this monitor and can handle the resolution. This monitor has very low input lag because there is no scaler or processing on the image. That also means you CANNOT run in a lower resolution, you MUST run in 2560x1440. If you can't run at least 60fps in that resolution you're going to be miserable, just to give you an idea I'm looking at 2x780s to be able to run games since I want to overlock to 100+ hz.

I think these monitors are cool and I'm personally getting one, but there is still a part of me concerned about locking myself into always needing two video cards to run a decent framerate. A lot of people are happy with them but who knows...

Edit: didn't see that you had already bought one, I missed that post as I was reading. So what do you think so far?

Well, cool. You were one of the essentially lucky ones then. Most of the people on OCN who had a bad experience in some way bought from dreamseller. Theirs were usually cheaper for a reason it seemed. That's not to say all their panels were subpar or he/she is some kind of scammer, as you further prove.

As for Shimians and the other IPSs they are not bad but I just don't think they are worth the price anymore with the PLS on the scene (though I haven't compared prices lately; in May when I bought my QNIX for $319 all IPS were at least $400).

I don't agree with this based on my experience. Depends on game and is partially subjective too I guess but I only have a single 7950 at present and BF3 and BF4 can't do better than average 35-50 and they "feel" and play just fine. Do I want more power and more frames per sec and would it be an even better experience? Sure but I do not absolutely need. It's been far from "miserable". And hey if you got the cash for two 780s then by all means but don't give people the idea they NEED that much power to game on this display.

I am definitely getting a second 7950 once I get a different mobo...

I never said you need 2 780s to run a panel like this. But you should be able to run at a bare minimum 40+ fps, and if you can't run 60 then you are going to get stuttering. Keep in mind: If you're averaging 40 fps, that means that during intense action you're going to be dropping to half that (or worse). That means that even if you're playing single play CoD when a big explosion happens you're going to have times when your game is chopping so badly you can't even see what's going on.

To me...that's miserable and unplayable. If you can consistently run at 60fps then even when you hit a particularly impressive/explosive scene you only dip to 30-40fps which is still bearable. Personally, I want to be able to run closer to 100fps and if that means sacrificing a tiny bit of extra effects, so be it. If you're going to run in 1440p with high graphical settings you need at least one very powerful GPU. You don't *need* a 780, but at this point I wouldn't be looking at a 27" 1440p WITHOUT a scaler if you don't have a card at least close to that powerful.

Edit: Oops, I forgot to edit my original post. What I had meant to say was that I was looking at two 780s because I want to overclock to 100+ hz and will need more power to push that many frames. I'll edit it now, now I see why you said what you did...my bad. I still stand by my statement that under 60fps is miserable though... I'm playing on a 24" 1920x1200 right now and when I start to get down to 60fps it's time to upgrade for me, thus my build this month
