as the title says, looking into a GPU upgrade.

5870's are old enough they dont appear in most websites comparisons anymore, looking for a 30-50% performance boost from a single card, with less total heat and power consumption - while staying relatively quiet.

280x seems like a good option (use the quiet BIOS, good case airflow) but i cant seem to find any direct comparisons with my setup.

advice, TPU'ers?

Here you go. Comparison with the 5870. 7970 GHZ = 280x. I don't know how well 5870's scale in crossfire, but if they scale well then the 280x will be a slight upgrade/sidegrade I think.

What are your clocks at, mussels?

I'm more interested to see what your performance increase results will be after you upgrade so I can compare against my 58x0 hetero CFX setup. I still don't plan on changing out my cards for a long while, but it's always good to know just where the current gen contenders stack up.

Maybe I'll switch mine out when they legacy the 5xxx series, maybe not.

suppose i'm just curious to find out from someone who's done the ugprade, because sometimes benchmarks dont reflect gaming performance. 1GB to 3GB should make a difference in many games as well.

I went from 2 6950s to a 7970 and loved it, never looked back. Judging from that pic james posted, 6950 was just a tad above the 5870. So comparatively, it was a similar situation.

You'll get the extra vram, you'll save the power and heat, and that 280x you linked (very nice card) would beat out the performance.

I say go for it, absolutely.

I upgraded 5870 CF with a non-GHZ 7970. It was more of a side-grade performance wise. OC'ing to GHZ speeds didn't yield a lot more performance, IIRC, I averaged about 5-10 FPS increase, which didn't seem like much since everything I was playing I was getting 55-60 FPS already. Keep in mind, back then, the 5870 CF handled just about any game at my 1920*1200 res.

single 5870 = single 6950

5870 CF < 6950 CF (6950 CF scales better)

I can run mine pretty comfortable at 925/1200 under water (the 5870 and 5850 both). They actually operate well at damn close to 1Ghz but I don't have full cover blocks and at that speed, the VRM heats up enough that the PCB *itself* gets hot enough to burn on contact; I ended up adding some DX.com ramsinks on top of the VRMs and the inductors to keep it cool enough to stay stable; 950 is probably maintainable for me, but I leave it back for peace of mind.

I wonder if you added some more cooling to your VRMs if you could get a decent overclock?

they're reference cards, they've both got accelero S1 coolers + 120mm fans, and VRM's are heatsinked. they just artifact with any ram OC at all, and any more than a 50MHz GPU OC - which is pointless and it tends to mess with idle power.

so far this seems like a good 'christmas' upgrade.

Hm. That sucks.

I think I got pretty lucky on mine; bought the 5850 used from Audituner who was running it at 920/1200 on air with the Gigabyte HS. I couldn't get it anywhere near that till I heatsinked my VRM (even with the waterblocks, although I don't consider it stable unless it furmarks for at least a couple hours, and I check the components regularly to make sure they aren't overheating even if the display isn't artifacting.)

I should have done some performance comparisons, but I just found my OC with afterburner, edited the BIOS, and never looked back... Who knows if it's even making that much of a difference.

One of these days I'll have to get around to (building a machine, installing and) overclocking that X850XT PE I pulled out of that free computer, as you suggested once upon a time.

^ this card seems to be a 1.1GHz w/ 1600MHz ram, which should be faster than a standard 1GHz card.

I did.
I replaced my CF 5870s when one of them died on me. ;)
Have been happy ever since.
No scaling or frame pacing problems, and the performance is generally quite a bit better.

You might wana wait for the 290(non x) and see what happens, or something like a 780gtx would be a much better upgrade. Prices on these cards are falling so keep an eye out. :)

If you're after longevity then I suggest one of the flagship cards GTX780 or a non-reference 290x. And if you're still fine with crossfire in the future for example then I'd say the 280x is the perfect choice since it's priced decently and will pretty much run all games (with a few exceptions of course) at 60fps/1080p on its own.

doh :slap: Still, even at the $40 more, is the 7970 that much better?

its more or less the same - i get a $70 price difference between the two i listed in the thread (7970 cheaper) for a 50-100MHz clock difference.

Sure Sure :) Makes sense :) I'd be interested in seeing info from those that go ahead and upgrade. I have every intent to do so, come next year, but I would like to see how someone else fares with the new one. Going from that 1Gb of yours to a 3Gb can only improve it if you've got the cash, I would expect. I'm a little farther away with the 6950s at 2Gb, but I still think it will be worth it. Good luck, and let us know how you make it, if you decide to :) *cheers*

Mussels I would just get the 280X and ditch the 5870's cause it would reduce Xfire issues and lower system watts/temps with just one card.

280x definitely would be an upgrade over 5870's, even if hypothetically those cards scaling would be perfect in crossfire.

I have the non boost version of that card. It is pretty great. The cooler is pretty quiet.

now thats what i wanted to hear.

i also liked the idea of trixx, cause a certain bossman made it.
