DAMN, I WANT TO UPGRADE MY 7970 TO A 290X, I HAVE THE MONEY, BUT I WANT A NON-REFERENCE 290X. HURRY THE F--- UP AMD, LET THE NON-REFERENCE MODELS BE RELEASED ALREADY. THAT 780TI IS LOOKING BETTER AND BETTER EVERYDAY.

ok, end of rant.

If you have the green, spring for the 780ti! It's a beast card for sure, downright beastly. The stock cooler is terrible on the 290(x) so if you no longer wish to wait, grab that 780ti with ACX cooler, really awesome ;)

Or save part of the money that would be spent on the extra 780ti, sell the 7970 and build a small loop for the REF R9 290X

I could get the TI, yes it is a beast of a card. But that is $150 more than a 290x. I could also get a reference 290x and a aftermarket cooler like the MK 26 for less than the TI. But I would loose expansion slots to the size of the MK 26.

The 7970 is going into my i7 860 system and I'm parting out the 7770 cards(one of them is already been entered as a prize for the WCG Birthday Challenge, Norton will probably buy the other))

I know that feeling. I get paid this Friday and I'm looking at 780Ti's for the sake of a reference cooler (My windforce is heating up the inside of my ITX case too much), but the 290X is cheaper. I'm kindof hoping HIS brings out a 290X with their custom blower cooler and it doesn't suck. If not, I'll just buy a reference 780Ti and a silverstone NT06 CPU cooler and pray it fits over my Kingston-too-tall-for-sensible-people-RAM.

I would get the 290 and a water setup, it will probably give you more than the 290X with a non reference cooler, some of the overclocks and performance on those things are well above it's price segment, but again, if you can't wait until the new year I agree the 780Ti is a very nice proposition, if a little expensive in comparision, it is today the better bet in my opinion, possibly not so in a few weeks time.

The thing that is killing me the most is that word is we're suppose to have non-ref 290x cards by the end of the month, yet we aren't hearing anything about them.

The card is designed to run hot, possibly to get every single ounce of performance out of it. There may be a required BIOS change by partners to allow it to run cooler while hitting the same clocks, otherwise you may still be getting custom cards trying to top out at 94 degrees in which case the heat dump will be severe and/or the custom coolers will still be quite loud.

I'm still keen to see proper, large scale results from people with 290's overclocked. The 780Ti's are silly fast but as everyone knows, really cheap (compared to what I paid for my Titan in Feb ). But seriously, it would be good to see a 290 and 290X AIB solution head to head with a 780Ti, partner card. Then gauge the price performance difference.

Just wait a bit longer my man - be brave, ride the speculation storm until we have ALL the answers. :rockout:

I think the question now is do you go for the 290 and flash it to a 290x....

I want a second card and im thinking of doing just that... good luck...

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
Looking around the chances of a successful flash are not very high in any card outside of powercolor. I wouldnt do it, even with a powercolor, with any expectation of success. Now, I'd buy one knowing I'm good with 290 performance and flashing may bring 290x performance.

I was going to say don't post in CAPS as it's shouting, but......!

Yeah, it's bizarre it's taking so long. At that AMD Q&A session they said they use that reference cooler to allow maximum compatibility with people's systems, but to me it must be hurting sales. It will be very interesting what this GPU can do with a decent cooler.

what most people don't know about the r9 290 is that one of the bios switch placements is locked...

so you might of tried and failed but you should try the other bios and see what happens... if I get the 300 spare this week i'll buy one and flash it with a guide thread for our community... :toast:

Put a freakin' lid on it already. Be a big boy and just wait a few more weeks. It's not like many games can utilize the full power of a 290X anyway. Not unless you game > 1080p resolution. I can see if they were to release it right after the new year, but it's more likely before the end of the year. So put on some big boy pants and be a man :slap:

Oh, you didn't know? I am world-renown for not paying attention to details. Credit card companies have their way with me behind closed doors when I sign contracts that have fine print. One of my downfalls

That 4GB will help a little in memory heavy games in the future with your monitor, even moreso with 4k if you ever decide to go that route. In any case, it wouldn't hurt to wait in all honesty. All of us wanting to get a new R9 card are pretty much in the same boat. Hell, I even cancelled my 290 order when I found out that non-reference coolers were coming out before the end of the year. It hurt, but I figure keeping my warranty is important to me just in case something ever happens to it. PC gaming is my "cold hard beer" after work so to speak, my meditation to ease the stress, my girlfriend's "special place" for when I wanna have fun...you get my point.

Actually, I'm needing the extra muscle of the 290x with my 1600p monitor. My 7970 OC'ed to 1100/1400 barely pulls 30 fps in Crysis3 at high settings. Plus, I've had it long enough(bought it in July 2012 on TPU) . Time for something new. I've had AMD video cards for a while now. Last Nvidia set I had was SLI'ed GTX280. But I just don't want to pay that $150 premium for the 780ti. I've always been one to go for the better value top of the line video card, use it for a while, and sell it off while it still has some value in it(I bought my 7970 for $350, I can sell it for around $225 now). When it comes time to sell my next video card, I'm sure I'll be able to get more of my money back out of a $550 290x as compared to a $700 780ti.

Also, another game I play (MechWarrior Online) doesn't seem to play very nice with the GTX770/780 cards.

I have to admit, it's taking a ridiculously long time for these cards to come out; I imagine that many more would be purchasing if the custom cards were released.
