Well I also don't want a loud build. how loud are the likes of h60's and h80's??
Thank you for your help everyone! lots to think about now!!
If you don't want a loud build steer clear of the 290/290x or wait for non-reference cards which should be coming soon. Otherwise opt for a GTX 780. What resolution are you on?

its going to be 1920x1080.

You reckon they are really that noisy?? I heard that the 290 is noisy but I read in a review that the 290x is considerably quieter? am I incorrect??

wrong. if anything the 290 is quieter, but both loudest cards on the market. honestly for 1080p id just get a 280x or gtx770.

In "quiet" mode the 290x is quieter than the 290, but performs the same for a lot more money. In "Uber" mode it's faster than the 290, but extremely loud. Even in "quiet" mode the 290x is loud. If you really want a quiet build get a non-reference 780. It'll be cheaper, significantly quieter, and with a slight OC faster. But you should really wait until the end of the month when non-reference 290/290x's start showing up and decide then.

Edit: At 1080p either card is overkill. Get a 280x or GTX 770 of your choosing if you don't plan on going 120Hz or 2560x1440 anytime soon

for 1440p, a 280x or 770 should still suffice, but going for the top dogs i.e 290(x) or 780 will be plenty (imo, at least 3gb vram)

The 290 is a tad faster than the 780 at that resolution, the 290x more so, but either will do. I'm running the 290 at 2560.1440 and it does very well with nearly anything fully maxed; BF4 multi at ultra is awesome. The 780 would be just as good.

If your aim is to build a silent pc, then the 290(x) is not ideal. At default settings, the cooler isn't that bad though audible, but when you pump it up, it gets loud. So for a normal sounding air build, the 290 will do fine, although the 780 will be quieter.

Ok good to know. Im thinking of the 290.not the 290x...the 290 just appeals to me according to what you are saying.it sounds like it might make a bit of noise, but you speak from experience so I am inclined to trust you! I do just want a normal sounding air build like you said, so the 290 sounds like its the best bet. I don't want to go complete silence but quiet would be nice. ;)

I am considering getting the following monitor down the track so the 290 should run good on it!

Wait till non reference designs are release with good coolers. The acoustics and thermals for the 290 still suck, and im not sure you would be happy with it.

OP, I too think you should wait a few weeks until the non-reference 290's are released and see how the dust settles. For a slight premium, the noise and heat of the reference design should be reduced significantly. Also, their release will place downward pressure on Nvidia's price points, so you might see the 780's come down a bit more too.

For the 290, PSU wise, go with a 650w for a single card or 850w for future Crossfire. If you go the Nvidia route, you can shave 100w of each scenario, and could probably do so anyway, but the non-reference power draw numbers are still unknown.

Whatever you do, don't pay $169 for the bloody Corsair TX750M. Whoever is offering that price should be shot.

Edit: Just took a look at the link you posted. I assume your not using an Aussie retailer for the hell of it.

Thanks Phenom! I am indeed going to take your advice, and I am going to wait until the non reference models come out..perhaps MSI will make a nice one of the 290! will be great. It will hopefully give me exactly what I am after.

and M0rt, I am an Australian so things are abit pricey over here. But yes I am going to wait for the non reference ones to come out and see what happens! will be interesting to see how they compare with audibility and heat.

I steer more in the direction of Gigabytes Windforce card with the 450w cooler, or Asus DirectCU

More personal preference, but Gigabytes new cooler is sweet, and Asus cards tend to be quieter than MSI IIRC.

Considering you're in Australia, I'd advise asking your fellow countrymen about their RMA experiences with various companies, just in case you need to get a component replaced under warranty.

MSI's fondness for brown PCB's on certain products kept me away from them. I've been toying with the idea of swapping my 670 for a 780 and it's a shame that they chose the brown PCB for their Gaming version.

I took a closer look and a 550w unit will be fine for any single card Z87 setup you'd choose even with OC's on both the CPU and GPU, but I'd recommend 800-850w for CF.

Ran some prices through an AUD to USD currency converter and the costs are still inflated. Any idea why? Tariffs? Just curious.

Thanks M0rt, yes I think tariffs have a major part to play in the inflation of the prices over here. I don't believe we have much at all in the way of manufacturing computer hardware. So you think if I went with a non reference 290 I should get a heftier psu? Why is that? I don't plan on crossfiring any time soon, just a single card with the Z87..

I don't think any place aside from mainland China, Taiwan, and some other spots in SE Asia have much in the way of hardware manufacturing anymore. Only Intel in Costa Rica comes to mind. I wonder how much R&D is still done in Silicon Valley too.

Even with an overclocked non-reference 290 and CPU, the absolute peak power draw for your system should be around 450w, so you will be fine with a proper 550w PSU. And, your idle and gaming loads should get some nice efficiency numbers. Plus, the industry is moving towards reducing the power consumption of all components.

A 290 running 1080p @ 60mHz is overkill at the moment, but you can rest easy because it'll continue to perform well as more demanding titles are released. By the time you'd be looking to upgrade, I'd be surprised if CF was the desirable option vs. newer tech.

I'll be in the same boat with you once the non-reference 290's debut; see ya around.

By the time you'd be looking to upgrade, I'd be surprised if CF was the desirable option vs. newer tech.

I'll be in the same boat with you once the non-reference 290's debut; see ya around.

yea, well my plan is to run a 290 at 1440p, but yea I plan on just waiting for the non references and seeing what happens!
Thanks for the advice ;)
