We're curious, what kind of keyboard do you use (classified by switches), and whether you think a keyboard has to have mechanical switches to qualify as a "gaming keyboard."

I'm using Roccat arvo... I rather have a very small gaming keyboard that fits the table.. than having a big keyboard that i don't even use half of its button..

There's no such thing as a gaming keyboard. People get what is the most comfortable for them to use in whatever fashion they use it, whether it's for FPS, RPG's or other genres of games. I could use this Dell QuietKey from the 90's for gaming excessively comfortably, but I doubt that classifies as a gaming keyboard.
I think "gaming" in terms of peripherals is more of a marketing buzzword(slap stickers and theatrical colour schemes on it), as opposed to a global baseline for design or effectiveness at gaming.

Brown switches because I type a lot and game a bit. I love it and will never go back to a membrane keyboard.

I have to agree with RCoon. I use a membrane type keyboard from Microsoft which I bought more than 5 years ago because I loved the tactile feel of the keys. The only thing that really interests me in keyboards is whether I like the "feel" of the keys or not. The only other criteria that I could see myself looking for is rollover, because I think that certain games which require many simultaneous key presses could be handicapped by a cheap keyboard with a low rollover count. Anything else, like displays, excessive macro buttons or backlight are purely gimmicks for me and not worth the money.

Mechanical keyboards for me, personally, are a preference thing. I don't believe that you can game quantifiably better by using a mechanical keyboard. On the contrary, I believe that for gaming any key technology can do, but if you type a lot at a high speed then you will probably prefer the actuation of mechanical keys.

EDIT: Oh, and my girlfriend would probably kill me if I would buy a mechanical keyboard. She's noise sensitive :p

And to clarify: I do game, and not just a little.

The keyboard type is membrane. I think every keyboard that has macro functions on it as a gaming keyboard. That's why I think.

I use a Corsair K90 with red switches, because I like to type with red switches, but I can game just as easily on this QuietKey, or my old Roccat Isku FX(both membrane). I'm not really bothered about cost or looks or buttons, I just like it when my wrist or fingers don't ache. I think everybody should go into a store and test out keyboards before they buy, so they can find the most comfort, instead of being swayed over because one keyboard looks shinier and somehow increases their e-peen.

Benchmark Scores I once chugged 2 coronas at once, not consecutively, at the same time.
I use this bad boy because its wireless and illuminated. AFAIK no mechanical keyboard can offer those two features simultaneously. Its also skinnier than Kate Moss and I personally prefer membrane switches over mechanical. I tried my buddy's blue MX switch 'board and it was terrible.... noisy, way too much key travel etc etc . Plus if you have ever opened up a logitech membrane keyboard, you will know that it is basically spill proof.

But I mean wired? Really? Can we move on from the 70s please? Arent y'all supposed to be excited for new tech, not ancient, redundant stuff?

I personally see no point in wireless keyboards. My keyboard is pretty much stationary because I have a desk and like good ergonomics when using my PC. Wireless makes sense where movement is wanted and necessary, but not for devices which barely move a few cms. And a cable will always offer a more direct, stable and quick connection. That being said, I have a wireless keyboard that is barely used at all connected to my PS3 for the occasional message.

I do have a wireless mouse though. The extremely small signal delay is no issue for me because I am not a competitive FPS player, and I like how there is no cable that tugs on my mouse. And mice get moved A LOT. So wireless makes some sense for me there.

However, wireless also means even more radiation, and even if I am not a tinfoil hat wearer I do seek to minimise it as much as conveniently possible.

Very narrow way at looking at it.

Anyways i don't mind using membrane keyboards but i get more pleasure out of typing or gaming when using a micro switched based keyboards. And microswitch keyboards give me more comfort too as i dislike the spongy feeling from membrane based keyboards..

As being a gamer for some time now starting of with the ZX81 ( worst keys ever ? ) and REM computers thinking back over the years the BBC micro was the most enjoyable.

But a keyboard don't require micros witches to be a gaming keyboard just that the micro switch type can make you enjoy using a keyboard so much more but that's imo and everyone's different or it would be a boring world we live in..

MX brown, because I tend to type more then I game (less tiresome then membrane keyboards that require me to push the key all the way down, and funnily enough mine is not that much more noisy since I more or less stopped ramming on the KB). The key roll-over that PS/2 brings me is nice (when gaming and funnily enough also when typing), although the "gaming" branding is nonsensical BTW because it is not necessarily a "gaming" keyboard persé. It does not come with illumination though, fortunately.

Logitech G510 with Membrane Switches is my favorite keyboard.

If logitech released a mechanical keyboard with a LCD, I'd be using that.
