Its because they run out of air intake. Plop a bunch of intakes onto your plane and you can get higher. Or better yet just turn off your air intake jets and swap to the turbo jet that uses regular fuel. That'll get you to orbit with minimal fuel use.

Eventually, no matter how many intakes you have you will eventually run out of air, even with the turbojet engine. To get into space and a stable orbit you will need some form of rocket and a tank with oxidizer and fuel.

Awesome, I hope they work out the time fast-forward thing. Hopefully the server tools for people to run their own servers are well made too, because I can see myself running a KSP server.

If I am not mistaken, the turbojet just uses regular fuel and oxidizer. You can bind keys to turn off the air intake jets and turn on the turbo jets. Space planes 101! Biggest problem I've had is getting off the runway. Once you're off everything comes up roses. You should be able to get to close to 50k on air intake if you're crazy enough.

The turbojet uses liquid fuel and air intake, it can not run off oxidizer. You might be thinking of the AeroSpike engine?

Okay ! So I broke down and picked it up while it was on sale. I've not bought or played a game in ages.
I was making great headway until I clicked some button that killed the tutorial.

Okay so after checking out the new patch 0.23, alot has improved in the game since I last played it(I last played during the .19-.20 version)

Testing the new things out while waiting for my popular mods to get updated and then I will start a new game. pretty excited!

Holy necro batman!

So I just started playing KSP again, last time I played was super early Beta when you could accelerate to 10,000m, turn at 45 degrees and enter orbit from there. The game has changed and has since released to full v1.0 and so now I have no idea what I'm doing. My partner is a physicist and refuses to help me with my "silly games". Anybody still playing? Any words of wisdom as of the introduction of crazy(realistic) mechanics?

I still play. Scott Manley started a beginer series when 1.0 came out. They changed a lot with 1.0, mainly the atmosphere and they added deadly heating affects.

I dunno if it's an addon but since 1.0 when I try to get a rocket into orbit the thing just goes nuts and ends up pointed back at the ground.

It is the new aerodynamic model. The drag really affects your space ship a lot more now than it did before, so if you go too far off from the prograde while in the heavy atmosphere the capsule reaction wheels will not be enough to overcome the drag.

You can't do the same maneuver you used before to get into orbit. You use to go straight up until ~10,000 then do your gravity turn by pitching to ~45°. Now you need to start the gravity turn practically right away and be a lot less aggressive with the turn.

KSP lead Dev is standing down to move onto other games but assures us development will continue for years to come.
I'm a little sad by this but the whole team has done such a great job. I look forward to what the future brings.
