Hello there :)

Im new to this site and would like to get this communitys opinion on an issue.

Im planing a new build and was planning to wait for the non ref r9 290's to come out,
but have recently been tempted to get a 780ti instead.

I would like to know were a non ref 290(non x) would stand next to the GTX 780ti?
Could one be over clocked up to one?
Whats the best card for profanes and value?
Is the 780ti worth the extra $$$?

I know that 780, 780ti, 290, 290x, etc; can all take what I can throw at them and then laugh at me.
But for the best long term performance (including the later addition of another, in crossfire or SLI)
What will keep maxing out games for the longest time?

note I do not wont to wait for the non ref 290x to come out, as Iv herd It will be much later then the 290 (which should be out soon right?)

So non ref 290 vs a 780ti. I think the non ref 290 can match a 780ti when overclocked, but members around this forum have managed some pretty sick overclocks on the 780ti's.
If you can't wait for 290X non ref (Which would be my choice), then I would then take the 780ti as my second choice.

Taking price in to consideration I would say get a 290 (non ref) and hope it overclocks well.

On performance alone, the 780Ti is faster but has less memory (but that would only start showing weakness at triple monitor gaming or 1600p resolution)

Either card will serve you very well.

Meh, we share similar opinions anyway, I kinda want people to buy into AMD's new big-dick cards but they done-lost-their-wigs when it came to non reference. It's a shame the 290X chips are in short supply, as that seems to be the issue with the late AIB cards. If they came sooner I'd recommend them hands down. But if money isn't an issue, I just have to recommend a 780ti in this situation. (Unless OP runs a gorrillion monitors or 4K, in which case get a 290)

Would the newer 290 cards flash into a 290x like I have read about, or was that just a certern batch?

gtx 780 ti 15% faster when overclocked vs 290x overclocked and 30% faster then 290.
+ Nvidia G-sync soon, go for it. g-sync must have. 290=>780 but pretty much the same when both overclocked. 780 ti > 290x

Only a certain batch from what I heard, and they are priced between 290's and 290X's, and they only seems to be reference models from a certain AIB Partner.

unlikely. If the newer 290's has a custom boards, then I dont think so.....

Given the price difference between 780ti and 290, I say go for 290. You should contemplate between 290 and 780 and 290x vs 780ti.

If you can wait for non ref 290/x reviews, it should give you a better idea on which card you will get.

G-Sync is good but you need a G-sync monitor as well.

Mantle is also expected with AMD gpu's.... so... until then if you can wait, wait.

If not, this comes down on how much your budget would be...... Have read alot of reviews regarding noise and temperature of 290's....... on some people they are not bothered by the noise as they are using headphones......

I also opted for 780ti not so long ago. But after I read about 290's on RV03 case (same case as I have now), I am just waiting for my funds for 290's. I cannot justify the price of 780ti. With 780ti SLI price, I could get 290's trifire with same price as 780ti.

And it seems like scaling for 290's has been better. Given as well the 290's has a Vram of 4gb and higher memory buswidth, 290's has an advantage if you are planning to upgrade your monitor to atleast 1440p or 1600p.

I have yet to have a issue with my 1600p monitor and the 3gig of RAM on my 780ti or my previous HD7970, even with Crysis 3 or BF4.

lol now I'm confused agin

Don't be. When people ask questions about gfx cards you'll get some logical replies and then some very biased ones. You just need to check out the reviews for the cards. Check all the 780Ti reviews you can find and see where the 290 falls in comparison. If everything is at stock it goes something like this: 780Ti > 290X =>Titan => 290 => 780. The only surefire best card is the 780Ti. But that is £200 more expensive than a 290 where I am. Is £200 worth the extra performance? That's up to you to decide.

Just to show how fast the 780Ti is though:

All this constructive debate makes me feel all warm and gooey inside. Nothing quite like it when TPU bands together in good spirit without bashing other people's heads in.

Nop... scaling for 290x`s isn`t better at any 1xxxp. Take a look http://benchmarkreviews.com/8716/2560x1600-geforce-gtx-780-ti-vs-radeon-r9-290x/5/ without 780ti overclocking!(we all know that 780 ti overclocks far better...) average fps on 780 ti in bf4 and other not nvidia titles.... 51fps.
290x amd titles average fps - 43... not nice for "best amd gpu 1600p"

its a single GPU you are talking about.... I am talking about multi GPU scaling....... bear in my mind that 290x crossfire scaling is better than 780ti scaling. And also, crossfire scaling is better now at 290's cause they are hardware's frame pacing.

in a lot of reviews regarding 780ti SLI vs 290x, lots of reviewers says it feels smoother than 780ti.......

I am not fun on neither AMD or NVIDIA....... If NVIDIA has same price or like 50$ more than AMD, I would opt for NVIDIA cause I like their coolers..... I dont want non ref now as I have a case optimized for air cooling.... But this is me..... this is just me..... non ref, both NVIDIA and AMD just blow hot air inside case... dont like that... dont want that anymore..... ok they perform better than ref coolers.......

and mind you, drivers for 290's are still young..... and AMD seems to concentrate now on fixing drivers for their multi GPU and multi monitor.....

I'd get the 780Ti, because the performance is better and it has better drivers, with less overall glitches.

I went with a couple 780ti's and I've been thrilled with the performance I have been getting. I was able to do a decent overclock (running two @ 1055mhz) without upping the voltage or the temperature, I can probably get quite a bit more out of them but I honestly just wanted a mild OC and haven't tried to max them. I prefer NVIDIA software and I was especially excited about Shadowplay for Twitch.tv streaming when it gets released, so that was a big part of my decision. The AMD cards (particularly the 290) is a good value, but I wanted the best and had the money to afford it.

If you want to go AMD, then the Asus R9 290X DirectCU II is an absolute monster card.

PC Per reviewed it and the custom cooler completely and totally solves the throttling problem - this baby just stays at a solid 1GHz GPU clock the whole way through and really shows what this GPU can do. Of course, it runs really quiet, too. At a mere $20 premium over the stock card, a 50MHz stock overclock, almost the same performance and all at $130 less, so much cheaper than a 780 Ti, getting it is a no-brainer and will lower 780 Ti prices for sure now. I reckon we could even see a price war between them. Bring it on!

Problem is due to the bit coin and lite coin mining craze a non reference 290x at newegg et al is $699 - in 780ti price range.
