Few Questions before building new Core 2 Duo Rig...

I am finally getting a new computer :rockout: . I just have a few questions about some parts and how long I should wait.

First off, I feel bad about not knowing this, but since it was delayed so many times, when does R600 come out? And will there be mid-range cards or just the flagship card?

I am definitely getting a E4300 CPU and overclocking it, but isn't there going to be a price drop on current Core 2 Duo CPUs later this month?

Anyway, here is my running list of parts:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E4300

RAM: At least 2GB, I will find a good deal on DDR2 ram with decent timings

Motherboard : GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 - I have read numerous reviews where you can overclock an E4300 to at least 3 ghz.

Case: Antec P182 - I just received this today. I ordered a black P180 and got the features of the P182 :toast: (I can post pictures)

Video Card: Still undecided until ATI releases their DirectX 10 line. Going with a 8800 GTS 320mb as of now, but would like to stick with ATI...

PSU: Corsair HX520W 520w

I have an extra hard drive, DVD drive, etc. - I didn't over look those things.

If you have any suggestions or can answer anything about my questions, please leave comments. Thanks in advance.

If you are willing to be patient, then price wise you'll end up saving on the cpu...2 gigs of memory should be good, that M/B is good for OC-ing. I almost went with a 4300, but ended up going with the 6300 due to it's more often repeatable OC's. Check my System Specs for more info. I love what I have. I decided to go with x1950pro for now, will wait till r600 is out, bugs are worked out, and DX10 is more widely used...I won't buy a card just to play Crysis in DX10 mode...and Vista works just fine for me for the most part.

I think the R600 is coming out in the next few months...maybe sooner. Also plan on getting good coolers for your OC'd hardware, get a good cpu cooler for sure. I also recommend getting some sort of active memory cooler, I use Corsair Dominator XMS cooler from Newegg, was like 20 bucks, but it is a great investment for $230 memory!

Good luck with your build! Hope it works well for ya!

Ok, thanks for the input. I will research the 6300 more. I never really overclocked a decent CPU. The 4300 just seemed so easy to overclock, especially after reading guides. I probably should just get a X1950 series card, and just upgrade to a DirectX 10 video card much later. I don't even plan on using Vista until later. No Vista = No DirectX 10 gaming. Anything is going to be a massive upgrade from my current system. Oh BTW, I have a Zalman 9500 CPU cooler to use. Forgot to mention that...

The 4300 is more easily overclockable due to it's bus speed of 800 (200x4 quad pump) as compared to the 6300's 1066 bus (266x4), it takes less OC-ing of the board to get to OC speeds, takes less of an increas to FSB to hit target OC. In some rare cases I've read of 4300's hitting over 3.3, but with more voltage. I'm able to hit 3.36 at stock 1.32 vcore and it's orthos stable over 24hrs, Tigger69 (helped me out a lot) hit 3.5 at stock volts on his e6300.

The Zalman 9500 is a good cooler, do you use AS5?

I highly recommend the x1950pro...I love mine, it doesn't OC far, at least in Vista..but read around, some have been very fortunate. The Powercolor Extreme has the AC X2 cooler, which is great. You can also get an HIS version with a HIS cooler that works just as well and exhuasts the heat out of the case compared to the X2's design hitting the base of the PCIE slot. Prices vary, I got my 1950 for $200 though.

Also if you get the 4300, you can save some shuckles on memory...go for 667 with a 4300 and 800 with a 6300. That way you can hit the memory's peak speed/oc closer to the top of the chip's OC for a better complete match on the OC front. You can go 800 with a 4300, but you won't use the most out of the memory. And I still recommend the XMS cooler, my G.Skill temps were ~40c idle, ~53c load before and ~30c idle and 35c load after...well worth $20 bucks. I also highly recommend the G.Skill 6400 phu2-2gbhz if ya go the 800 route..I have them oc'd to DDR2 960, 2.25v, 4-4-4-5 timings! Very OCable and stable.

I love my P5B Deluxe, it's an amazing board, and the DS3 is great also, and cheaper.

Glad I could help, I'll check back to help further if I can and see how things turn out!

Your best option is to wait until May or June. ALL CPU prices are going to plumet... Grab a Core 2 Duo E6400 or E6600 depending on your budget.. By then the r600 will most likely be available, and comparable prices to the Nvidia 8800 series... If you're going to spend $150 on a PSU... get something nice.. Nice Antec?, Thermaltake?, Coolermaster 850? :O Patriot makes some good DDR2 memory, try to find some DDR2-1066, forget the ddr2-800. :D

Yes, I still have some left.

If you're going to spend $150 on a PSU... get something nice.. Nice Antec?, Thermaltake?, Coolermaster 850?

I found the Corsair one for $100 shipped at Buy.com. It is a re-branded Seasonic and the review on SilentPC highly recommended it.

I am at least waiting until the price drops on the current Core 2 Duos. I should have never bought the case this early, but at least I got a $50 mail in rebate before the period ended. It is hard being patient when it just sits there in my room...

Wait and save mate.

You will :nutkick: if you buy the parts now, then in 2 months or so when CPU's and GPU's have had massive price cuts.

If you cant wait, id recommend an e6300/e6400 (for their OC potential)

With the RAM, there is a nice kit of G.Skill on newegg with $40 off. Its currently $150 for 2GB, has 4-4-4-12. Thats the RAM im currently using, and it OC's to 1000Mhz nicely, and 1110Mhz @ 5-5-5-15

Ok, thanks for the advice. Are you suggesting I buy RAM now since the rebate and just wait until CPU and GPU prices drop to buy other parts?

Memory is touch and go...that is a good deal as I have the same memory Pinchy has and I am at DDR2 960, 4-4-4-5. I paid $230 for it 1.5 months ago...and I'm still content with it, even though being much cheaper now.

Yeah 1066 is good stuff, guarenteed to hit speeds that I have to OC to. But they are generally the same chips with slightly different bins, and 1066 requires more voltage, just like my memory would to get to 1066's rated speed. I believe in saving some money and getting good DDR2 667 or 800 that is capable of 1066+ at or close to the 1066's recommended settings. And there are so many good brands of memory out there, Mushkin, Geil, Corsair (not the value crap though) are a few more.

Yeah dude. I had a case for a build I wanted to do, sitting in my room for 2 YEARS! It's possible to wait.. lol As for the power supply issue, if you're going to spend 100 - $150, get something with more wattage and not just a 520.. I went from a 500 to 700 upgrade, and I've noticed some difference in performance, and don't BSOD as much. As for memory.. Mushkin has some nice ddr2 with Micron D-9 chips, and they ROCK. Corsair is also getting pretty low in prices, memory is going down, cpu's are going down, just wait 2 months and save yourself a couple hundred bucks.. Also for a motherboard.. check out DFI and ASUS if you're gonna spend $160 on a board... I've NEVER had a problem with in ASUS board..

Yeah this P5B Deluxe is my first ASUS in years, and it rocks! If you can hold out for a couple of months you can take your budget and stretch it further, if not, well then we have the same level of patience and PAY dearly for it! LoL!

You all have been a lot of help. I made another $120 today, so that will be added to the budget. Now just to wait... it will be worth it.

Yeah thats so true.

I mean, if your waiting 2 months for the prices to drop, you may as well wait for ram to drop. There is a good chance that it will be lowered in price as well ;)

Soon Quad core and DX10 GPU's are gonna be released, so you can expect big price cuts :D

Yeah true, but you might be able to get a Quad core/DX10 when they are cheaper, for the same price you could get a dual core and DX9 card now ;)

Yeah true, but you might be able to get a Quad core/DX10 when they are cheaper, for the same price you could get a dual core and DX9 card now ;)

I learned that it is a waiting game. Now I can't decide about which motherboard. I am thinking about completely dropping the Gigabyte one and getting a ASUS P5B Deluxe/WiFi-AP. I like all the little features: WiFi built-in (going to definitely use wireless), lay out, dual LAN, etc.

The Deluxe is a great motherboard..I love mine and the WiFi-AP has more stuff, and the same great features mine does! The PC business is always a waiting game..the trick though is to pick out what you have decided you want...and watch price trends..if you know when and where to look you will save a lot of money...and some research and time will get you there! Good luck to ya!
