Game play should be longer and less cutscenes(unless they are really story telling and fun to watch)I would like to see more 2d games.

Yes i would like to see some more too, i would like to see Tiger Shark revived, although not played it much yet due to one thing or another deadlight was a refreshing game to see and best thing they ever did with the unreal engine for a very long time.

I think Rhino clearly backed up his meaning by clarifying play testing and bug fixing is sub par anymore, which is true. A big part of finishing a game is not just creating and implementing content, but making sure the overall package actually works as it should, vs being rushed out the door on an unrealistic, publisher enforced deadline.

There are tons of varying opinions on types of games, but one thing that is more or less a universal gamer's code is wanting games to work properly.

I'm not sure this is true though. Statistically I would guess that it's the same now as it was say in the 90's, it's just that now we have the internet to scream on if we find anything wrong and it is a bigger industry. There has always been bugs, more or less serious, and there has always been bad eggs in the bunch. Fallout 2 was quite buggy when it came out and it never got fixed by the devs. KOTOR 2 was a nightmare (read this).

When game demos came with magazines I installed stupid looking games sometimes, now that you download them, I just don't download anything the doesn't look interesting to me. Result is, I don't know anything about 95% of the games that come out. And I am so proud! So none of fantasy games, witchcrafr games, role playing games, 2D games, platform games, disney games, burgerking or pizza simulators (kidding), baby and mama games, manga games, interactive story telling games, lego games, pinball games, tetris games, zombie games, assassin games, educational games, clic-a-lot games, do interest me at all. I only have angry birds on my phone and it's moooore than enough for clueless moments. So who knows if some brilliant game is hiding somewhere. I have no time to research it. I do proudly read books : )
But of the games I like, racing and flight sims and shooting and historic strategy, only shooters are involved in needing "original scripts" and yes, they are poor.

I really hope WWII Online can make it into Steam and revive, those MONTH long air, sea and land battles were great and the script (the strategy and mission unfolding) was HANDMADE by actual players, commanders and soldiers on foot. Those days were the last time I played for hours day after day (job allowing)...

That's just two games. From what I've seen it's much more common now that games release with lots of bugs and many never being fixed.

Yes, proper statistics is probably time consuming to compile, those were just examples. Such statistics are probably pretty uninteresting too.

... or we initiate the TPU Bug Project and get hard data from games from ... 1995 maybe and onwards. :D

As already said "The Soul Is Missing" for both games and music in general. (And perhaps even movies - Hell Tobey Maguire still looks 22 and they have ALREADY re-made his spiderman remake FFS!)

Could not agree more, and would like to add the fact that the studios treat us all like we have ADD. We don't need reboots, remakes, reimagines, we need ORIGINALITY! And with originality comes.... soul!

Edit: If Konami remade the original Silent Hill in complete overhaul (as opposed to an HD remake) I would have to give in. I don't mind it so much if the studios put in "effort" and not do things half-assed!

Meh I want classic survival horror Resident Evil game, not some zombie shooting crap. REmake and Zero were perfect. I really hope that RE7 will be maximum horror and minimum shooting.

I also hope Tomb Raider will get puzzle and platforming oriented, but I doubt it. Most likely it'll continue that shit from the reboot. After that 2013 abomination I think it'll never get back on track.

I wouldn't exactly call it abomination but I do agree that at least couple of puzzles were so badly needed in the latest tomb raider.
The problem I have with reboots in general is that it seems a reboot of a franchise automatically means breaking the tradition instead of building on top of it.
Like there are only 2 choices: complete reboot or almost same sequel. Honorable exceptions are, of course, excluded.

They want to make this game appealing to the masses, and you know today casual gamers are run n' gun fans and games are just cash cows. Everything for the money.

I agree reboots obliterate everything: voice actors, main character's bio and appearance, franchise's direction and so on. I've yet to see a really good reboot.
Tomb Raider rebooted, Doom rebooted, Wolfenstein rebooted and many others. I hope at least Doom 4 and Resident Evil 7 will get back to their roots.

I started with RE4, only because the older ones were not supportive to KB/M. You had to have a mouse aim mod to use KB/M in RE4, but I felt it was a great game. What I miss in today's RE games are the nice level design, variety of creatures, with epic ones like the Rengerator (esp the ones with spikes) and Verdugo, and it had great ambient sounds. Of course it was more gun oriented as you said, but ultimately it's up to the player what weapons to use and how much to upgrade them.

Agree completely on TR 2013, and I have the same worries too. I doubt we'll see another game like Anniversary, because the focus on puzzles and platforming has been waning since Underworld. How any dev can make the decision to suddenly go from relics being hidden in rooms with elaborate, death defying timed traps, to putting them out in the open in clay pots you can kick open, is baffling. That was one of the worst content choices they've ever made.

A lot of what is being said is true. But I do think we are bombarded by choice and have done that and played that for like a million hours making us jaded. There are still many gems in the past decade or so and many more to come. There were a million forgettable titles growing up too. Gaming has exploded in the past decade and a half because of great games, not soul-less mediocrity.

I started with Resident Evil Zero and REmake on GameCube, then Resident Evil 2 on N64, after that Resident Evil 3 on Dreamcast, later switched to Resident Evil Code Veronica on GameCube and finally Resident Evil 4 on Wii. It's the best experience I've ever had. I've never played PC or PS versions and never played Resident Evil Outbreak on PS2. I haven't played 5,6 and Revelations yet but if I will I think I'll play them on PC.

I agree about Resident Evil 4. It's a good game and has a great replay value, unfortunately it wasn't scary. Like you said the only scary moments are Regenerators, Iron Maidens, Verdugo and Garrador. They're really creepy and tough, especially on professional difficulty. But Resident Evil 4 had many moments from early classic games. Timed boss battles were classic, Ashley reminded me of Sherry Birkin from RE2, Ada Wong gave Leon super rocket launcher just like she did in RE2, final boss battle was on the helipad just like in REmake and many other things that recalled classic games.

There is gazillion gaming news articles there :toast: for those interested this is NextPowerUp gaming channel
LOL yeah, first article is about Apple something, and second article about Xbox controller something. IMHO Next Power Up is bland and mobile/console centered. Not taking away anything from the true articiles about games. But, please, I am not interested in phones or consoles on a DAILY basis, I hope that for 1-2 years I do not need anything mobile related. And consoles, well, haha, I will never have one.

We all pass through to a point in life where we stick to our kind of perfection in anything, and our own videogame apogee logically come when we discover it, often while preteen let's say.

That said, there was probably more good games in proportion 20 years ago, but there still the same dozen good game every years, melted all in all.

Now that I have childrens I realize that the root cause of someone complaining in front of toys, is to having too much toy to live by. Never take time to stop, never feel things, never feed our soul, to complaining that games lack of soul.

So, today's technology give us the chance to play closer than ever of the creator's idea but our imagination will always fit us better.

yeah, better graphics to push the top end and SLI/xfire'd GPUs. BF4 runs ultra on an old 7950. I want movie quality graphics which push my 7950 crossfire beyond the limit when overclocked, so that I'm enticed to buy the next super GPU. At the moment, I can see no reason to do so.

There's just a lot of things about RE4 that are more fleshed out than what they're offering lately. I've played 5, 6 and Revelations on PC too, and they all suck by comparison. They're constantly revamping the inventory system, but making it worse each time. They're continuing to ruin the creature content. The boss fights are sparse and uninteresting. They're improving controls yet throwing in escape segments with poor camera angles that pretty much negates it. There's no more variety to combat like you had before where you could conserve ammo by planning foot shots followed by kicks and suplexes, it's all automatic now. There's no stealth dimension like the way you could hide Sherry in bins while escorting her. I also had suspenseful moments in some spots other than the creatures you mentioned, the dogs in the cemetery being one that comes to mind. Granted it was largely due to the bad mouse controls causing me to sometimes miss and get attacked or run low on ammo though.

Maybe it's for the best. If you experience all these different control schemes and different kinds of games, who knows what might happen.
I am PC gamer first and foremost myself, however I don't see the point in that kind of platform elitism. At all.

There are some things that can still get me going in gaming, running around with like 4 life in a shooter is as intense today as it was in the 90's for me, of course ignoring the fact that 4 life should = pretty much dead already lol.

the Bioshock games offered some interesting plot twists and social commentaries (ironically the critically panned Of Orcs and Men has a decent social commentary as well), batman games will always get me because you get to be friggin BATMAN, and total war games really opened up the strategy genre for me. The thing that seems lacking for me is true single player rpg's but I still have my old ones.

mainstream games do seem a bit easier, but really going back and playing some of the old pc games doesn't offer that much of a challenge now anyways. Sure you'll say "well you've played it a zillion times" true, but that's likely why the new games feel so easy as well. 25 years of pc gaming skill honing doesn't just vaporize because the game is new. Afterall there's only so much you can do with a keyboard and mouse and after 25 years... it's not likely a new combination exists.
