Hey guys !

The time has finally come for my GPU upgrade and it will happen this saturday. I'll be playing games on my 120Hz 1080p Monitor.

With the increased prices on AMD cards i've been looking at the GTX 780 and found the Palit Jetsream GTX 780 going for $589 on PC Case Gear

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=193_1483&products_id=26883

The Gigabyte version is only $10 more......

http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=193_1483&products_id=23837

A reference R9 290X is going for around $640 atm.

I love AMD (something about supporting the underdog I guess) however if I think critically about this i'm leaning more on the lines of the GTX 780, all emotions aside :)

The other option was the R9 290. I could grab one of the non reference cards for under $550........

If you could all be so kind to help give me some mental clarity with what would be the "best" choice out of the listed options- all loyalties aside that would be great.

I would appreciate your advice ! Please cast your vote and offer any insights you have :)

Thank you :)

if you are playing 1440p above res, I would recommend R9 290's. AMD r9 290/x are great with high resolution. but below 1400p, go with GTX 780 as they performed better than AMD. That is what Ive read.

Oh and GTX 780's overclocked extremely better than 290's

I would say shop around and get a cheaper card.

We really need to stop supporting these high graphic prices.

Ask some of the AMD guys what is best for the buck.

I would go with the 290 (non X) if you can get one at a reasonable price. If not, then the 780.

I fully agree. I call this Rip-Off prices. Way too expensive.

Best bang for the buck I see is the 2GB GTX770 these days. ~$340 for a card that is comperable to an R9 280X in terms of gaming performance, but ~$50 cheaper.

AMD prices are through the roof right now due to litecoin miners (I myself am partially guilty).

I'd say go with NVIDIA for bang for your buck right now, and you won't hear me saying that often.

I ordered my Asus 290X DCUII from ShopBLT, it was out of stock when I ordered, but they are very good at giving you an idea of what inventory they have, the ETA on new stock, and the number of backordered parts.

I only waited a couple of weeks after placing the order to get the card, price was bellow MSRP and they had free shipping and no taxes in most states, in fact, you can order a Visiontek 290X from them now for $565 as opposed to $699 + tax and S&H at Newegg:

Benchmark Scores bench...mark? i do leave mark on bench sometime, to remember which one is the most comfortable. :o
if you want raw power and 4gb and not going for a Ti then 290X (the cheaper non ref model you can find, with a little bit of luck you can find one at a non over inflated price ) if you decide for a 290 > then go for a 780 (or not .... a R9 290 is still damn good over a 780) , if you want 4gb but at a good price and still be able to play any game and future game : 770 4gb (over the R9 280X unless the upcoming 280 get a decent price) bang for bucks indeed 770 2gb (i had one).

and since you are not bound by a small budget and consider high end i will not recommend my favorite renamed little devil the MSI R9 270 Gaming OC (and her X variante) oh wait i indirectly .... nah doesn't matter, i love that card no game is too much for it atm... so yes basically overpriced high end is not the only issue (or the 300$+ section ...)

well if the difference is really 100$ less , that is ...

i just found out i can get a R9-290X stock cooler for 450chf, well funny enough : where i live the cheapest R9 290 is 394 chf (non ref) so, on par with the GTX770 pricing (which is 384chf for the 2gb version) and the cheapest 780 non Ti is 487chf ...
highest price for 290/X 615chf but with BF4 for a 780 non Ti 803chf no game but Waterblock :D

if not going for a 780Ti then a 290/290X is a wiser choice (non ref and pricing between a 780 and a 780Ti) depending on the pricing on the zone where the OP live ofc

Well looking at the price's I would go with the GTX 780
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127746
The MSI TF4 model is $489.99
or maybe the EVGA ACX version
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130918
which is $509.99 but after mail in rebate is $489.99
but but but the 780 is sooooo old tech ... has been, so 2013 :fear:

if its not a Ti then its a no go

joking aside im mad at the pricing outside of switzerland :D or ... not, i just realized that if i convert the price from $ to CHF and add the Custom taxes ... it would cost nearly 80-100chf more, than the cheapest 780 i listed above.

between the 2 above i would go for the Twin Frozr IV model : by far the best non ref cooler i ever seen and had.

edit: and im mad at myself to not thought of looking the OP system spec ... 7970 ... SO NO! definitely not a R9 280/280X :D and not a 780 either ... too marginal perf gain ... why not keep till Maxwell if going nV? 780Ti or R9 290X do not settle for lesser one!

Greiver, if only the Australian politicians were as convincing as yourself. After reading this post i'm leaning towards the 290.......... :) Also with mantle being refined it's seems more clear to me now. Thanks also to everyone else that's posted.

If price is no object than R9 290 all the way. I love my 780 but my 290 was the best GPU purchase i made.

Greiver, if only the Australian politicians were as convincing as yourself. After reading this post i'm leaning towards the 290.......... :) Also with mantle being refined it's seems more clear to me now. Thanks also to everyone else that's posted.
ahahahahahhahahahah  xD i guess i have a future in Australian politics  thanks for the abs session :D i never laughed so hard after reading a post :)

subliminal message : *go for the TFIV MSI Gaming R9 290/290X OC ed.* the TFIV cooler is awesome! (no i don't get percentage or discount for doing this  )

http://lanoc.org/review/video-cards/6821-msi-r9-290-gaming

if i ever get to take a R9 290 that would be a MSI ... i keep my faith in that brand (and that since my N460GTX HAWK )

well the price is not too bad for a 290X but it will require a aftermarket cooler (which will increase the price) ohhhh for me that one is a bit more than 620$ but with BF4 include,
for 650$ can find the Tri-X OC BF4 Ed. .... and the 290X from MSI gaming is just a little bit under 600$-

ok ok now i'm not mad at the prices of my country anymore ... once they restock the MSI R9 290X and i have enough aside i sell my R9 270 and take one ... :D (in 1 or 2 yrs .... oh wait new gen ... daaaaaaaaamn)

I voted 290.

I was just looking at msy and they got a gigabyte R9 290 WF3 there for $529.

Was looking for quick reviews on it but didn't find much.

Theres not a whole lot of difference between the 290/290x so i would save the cash.

Still theres nothing wrong with a 780. I just find the 290 awesome value if you can keep em cool!

TOTALY and also a WF3 doesn't need a Kraken G10, Twin Frozr IV and WindForce 3 for me are the 2 best non ref cooler (the Tri-X from sapphire is not bad at all either... but i hate sapphire cards ... excepted for their X800GT 256 AGP8X:roll: )

I vote 770 because I can! In fact the Palit Jetstream model, cheaper than a 280, they hum along quietly without voltage increases at around 1300Mhz on the GPU, cost pennies and at those speeds are at least as quick as a stock 780, unbeatable Bang for buck IMO..... of course I may well be bias as I ordered one last night!

Ohhhh and Greiver...... everyting must be "old 2013 tech" then as te 290's came out last year? So lets all just buy the new R7 265 then :)

ahahahah yeah :) (wait a sec ... nope ... 780/780Ti/Titan/Titan black are sooo Kepler 290 is Hawaii :D ok i stop joking)

you must be lucky to have some 770 chaper than a 280/280X where i am it is the opposite and since no perf differences i rather take a 280/X with 3gb than a OP 4gb version 770 ;)

i had a 770 with a factory OC and a slight manual OC and indeed it was near a stock 780 but the 290 (non X) is still above them (if it were not for cryptocurrency ... the price would be much better ... pffff)

i would say GTX 780, because drivers just are better and support for 120hz and higher ain't such a problem with Nvidia that it is with AMD. (or that is what i have seen when ppl got AMD they have a ton of problems getting their screens to run 120hz and higher)
