Hello !

I'll be retiring my 7year old Rig listed below;
  • CPU - Intel E6600
  • Motherboard - Intel DG965RY
  • GPU - ATI 4850 (Dead)
  • RAM - Transcend 4X1GB DDR2
  • Monitor - Dell SP2208WFP
  • PSU - Corsair VX550
  • HDD - 3.25TB (2+1+0.25)
  • Cabinet - CM 690
Will be keeping following components;
  • Monitor - Dell SP2208WFP
  • PSU - Corsair VX550
  • HDDs
  • Keyboard & Mouse
I have shortlisted following components, would like to get opinion on this and please suggest if there are any better alternatives ...
  • CPU - Intel i7 4770k or i5 4670k (tilting towards i7 coz I think 8 cores with ht will be futureproof)
  • Motherboard - Asus Z87 Pro / Maximus VI Hero (confused between these two)
  • GPU - Sapphire Tri-X 290 :eek:OC
  • Ram - 8GB
  • Cabinet - Tempted to get CM Storm Trooper but if my first gen CM 690 is sufficient for the new gen cards then I would rather invest that amount in something else.
  • PSU : Is My 3yr old corsair VX550 is enough to power the rig ??
Things I will be adding in near future;
  • 24/27" 2k Monitor
  • CPU Watercooling kit
  • Full Tower Cabinet

4770 is waste of money.
you dont need so much cores for every day tasks and gaming. quite few of modern games can realy use more then 2 cores.
if you are that tempted by core numbers better get xeon e3 http://pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80646e31230v3.
on paper 550W will be enough but picking in accout it is 3 years old and is CWT made i would sugest you to upgrade your psu for something in 600-700W range.

consider also 120-128GB ssd for os and most often used stuff.
hero has better (on paper) audio compared to z87 pro

difference between 650W seasonic from my post and your post is that modularity. my is semi modular your is full modular. if you are ok with price difference full modular is perfectly fine.
if you are on budget there ara cheaper choices then gold rated psus. you havent specified where are you from so i gave example from market with biggest variety.
840 evo is may be best price/performance/quality rating atm on market.

I go with the 4670k since no use of hyper threading

like i wrote in a topic about amd mobo , asrock just made a very good mainboard and very cheap :
the asrock fatality killer seems to be one , i found a review on it by specialists of ssds and this board is largely the best with latest technologies
he compares it to the latest and most expensive intel mainboard ....
have a read :
http://www.thessdreview.com/our-rev...ew-fatal1ty-fx990-killer-am3-amd-motherboard/

i would buy 16 Go of ram and take a more powerful psu
you can look if you can do an hybrid-crossfirex with one vga

here is a french test of 122 cpu : http://www.tomshardware.fr/articles/comparatif-cpu-amd-intel,2-8.html
that should help to select one

Tinking about i7 because I see upcoming games using more and more cores, PS4/Xbox games will be optimised for 8 cores so won't they show better results on i7 (8 cores with ht) compared to i5 quad cores ?

Thing is ASRock after sales is poor in my country (India). Even I liked Extreme 6 but would not prefer to go for it coz of the sole AfSS reason.
I think I'll take call on 4670k / 4770k after buying all other components, depending upon the cash I would be left with...

whats your point? gaming, all around or you wanna get the highest?
if you just need better processing performance you may take i5 and you can save some for other hardware

8 steamroller cores are not = to 8 intel cores.
steamroller cores (updated buldozer) are "made" from 1integer+2floating point modules which is counted by amd as dual core. so 8 steamroller are 4integet+8FP modules
intel crores are "made" from 1integer+1FP module and this is counted as 1 core. so intel's quad core is 4integer+4FP modules. hyper threading adds 4 virtual (emulated) cores in addition to 4 physical and this is called 8 core cpu.
as you see non of the big 2 has real 8 core cpu and i doubt they will release such cpus any time soon so you shouldnt worry about games optimized for 8 cores in near future.

My ssuggestion drop to a i5, buy my ASUS Z87-A, 8GB 1600MHz RAM, 650W PSU minimum as a 290 can draw some serious power, and case is a personal preffernece

I5 and the SS-750KM3 and 8GB should be fine as long as you keep the pagefile on. And if you want the system boot game loading faster change one of the HDD's for a SSD..

You say all around meaning like what apps do they even support HT and such ?.. And if they do would you be using them all that much compared to your gaming ?.
