XFX Radeon R9 290 Double Dissipation too loud!

Hello

I recently bought the above mentioned card and I noticed during heavy load the card is really loud although this is suppose to be a a quiet R9 290 even under load!

I ran FurMark for a few minutes and then my system freezed, the gpu temp seems ok but the fan speed and VRM temps are quite high. I'm using 13.12 Catalyst drivers and no overclocks.

GPU-Z while running FurMark screenshots attached

Okay, just before you add your XFX Radeon R9 290 DD, did you uninstall previous drivers properly? If not, please use this: http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/display_driver_uninstaller_download.html
and do a clean driver un-install and try again. This happens to my friend when he starts moving from Nvidia > AMD GPUs. He then got the same problem as you... your situation may be different...

Tried that and uninstalled all detected drivers, reinstalled Catalyst 13.12 and ran FurMark for approx 10mins, same problem!

My GPU temp reached 82C, fan spinning loud at 3083rpm, VRM1 at 113C and VRM2 at 73C

Certain review sites reported the XFX still can't build coolers so that's a possibility. Other sites reported the opposite so XFX might have mounting inconsistencies. If it doesn't void your warranty try take the card apart and repaste the core and reassemble it and see if that helps

Looks like VRM1 isn't being cooled properly. You could take the cooler off and check... or return the card. There's no magic fix for it.

It seems this issue is common with this specfic card, i'll monitor my temps further while gaming and if it's always on the high side then i'll probably RMA the card.

I read in another thread a response from an XFX rep that said they are aware of this and that there seems to be some cards who's thermal tape is bad. They are apparently aware of the issue. Did you try and contact XFX?

I have contacted XFX support for another issue (BF4 promo code) and it's still open and i can't start another ticket unless the first one is closed! The initial issue is sorted out though, I have the email of one of the reps from xfx and i'll try to contact him regarding this matter. Thanks for your help Relayer, i'll keep you posted. :)

I agree the cooler is not so silent but please it's no were near the reference cooler even more so if it was allowed to go the same %'s.

Same kinda temp differences here too although i not having the crashes or any thing. I am currently waiting for a response of them about checking the contact as it don't seem right although there is a few people reporting the crazy vrm differences although the high temp one is not going over 90c which would explain why no crashes...

Idles temps are the same in my case at least which tends to say the contact is the same for both vrms which could mean it's a design\new batch issue.

Fase, if you cannot find the BF4 code check the back of the warranty booklet at the bottom a small label although don't use it until your happy..

Stay away from CCC as well. Screwed my system up a few times trying different drivers and a friend who has a reference card ( ASUS not as that matters ) he sending arts back as his USB 3 ports failed.

I have had no issue with MSI afterburner although do some research 1st as it will save you some troubles.

I get your point, but when my fan is spinning at 2500+rpm it's as loud as my HD5970 (Dual GPU). Almost all the reviews I read before purchasing the R9 290 DD praised the low fan noise even under load!

Seems like you have 290X, mine is the non X version, according to some online discussions, the X version has different VRM specs and should have lower temps.

My idle temps are fine and the card is very quiet.

I'm aware of that and it wasn't the issue, when I tried to redeem the code I was getting an error stating that there were no more codes in stock and I should try later, eventually i was able to obtain one and download BF4. I hope this will not be an issue in case I RMA the card in the near future!

Are you suggesting that I uninstall the drivers all together or just CCC?

I haven't tried MSI afterburner and I don't think i'll will need to overclock my card.

Thanks for your input :)

No you can leave CCC installed just that trying to overclock with it has been a issue every time i used it.

Just took another look at mine and same deal VRM1 is hotter when under load but cooler than vrm2 when idle.

BTW my cards version 4.0 so shits changed for sure i bet since the 1st release. Should read the warranty too as i understand it your only allowed so many replacements in 2 years or some thing like that.

My main concern is the noise, if the VRM's are rated for high temps then i'm fine with that, but the noise when the fan spins at up 3000rpm+ is really annoying!

They don't bother me but i guess the sound is muted out due to game sounds and i don't use a case either and my system is really silent too even without the case.. I would of thought the vrms would be rated some thing like 120-125c although other parts around them could get to hot too.

O BTW Furmark runs shit on a very unrealistic setting.. Much better of using some thing like OCCT 4.x. you be much better of running that or\and 3DMark as they are both more realistic on how much power your system will ever draw..

That's the one. Cheers, Fase.

Furmark is not a relevant bench any more since the manufacturers have inserted safeguards against it. I would actually warn against it because all one would need is for the safeguards to be removed/bypassed somehow (Mistake in drivers or BIOS) and it would likely fry most high performance cards today.

Yes, I decided not to use FurMark anymore, I tried OCCT after AsRock's suggestion but it's barely stressing my GPU! I think i'll just monitor my temps using GPU-Z while gaming.

OCCT has used more power than any game i play by about 50w.. I use the PSU test.

Correct me or not they are saying the VRM for the gpu is near the DVI ports and if thats the case by looking down the side of the card it's just a plate ( part of the cooler ? ) cooling it.. Just about to check if they got back to me about it as i really want them give me the go ahead to to the cooler of before doing any thing.

If it's on that pplate i believe there could be improvements made without out un reversible modification.

Thank you

I had seen that thread the other day, but for some reason thought it was order then current. The XFX rep had not posted either when I had seen it.

I'm trying to find the picture again, but I'm a little confused by the XFX rep statement in that thread because I thought I had seen a picture that the VRM he is indicating (those closest to the display outputs) were in fact VRM2.

Yes erocker there is a magic fix, return it and get a properly manufactured cooled card. Not the shit Asus, xfx just to name a few have no clue on using proper fans. Look at charts and there open bench tests. Dont xfx get another company to build there cards? Its an honest question not an insult. Just like water cooling a radaitor, you put the wrong fan on it and its usless, but put a well and proper designed fan on and she cools like a sob... its the truth most of the fans on cards are just noise makers and dont cool really any better then the reference cards.. only difference is different fan makes different noise. Thats just imo. I've had my hands on a few cards and without any names only 2 are quiet but only one is quiet and actually cools.

I ran the 15 min furmark test at max settings to push the bitch and you know what I had for temps? Well in 5 min the temp chart line went up slowly and curved at a nice even pace and sat at 70c with 53% fan speed set on auto. thats where she sat in a totally closed case. 70c straight line all the way to the right. I couldnt draw a straight line like the temperature grid did lol but really its the fans.

Which card is that and what were the room temps? Also, at 53% fan speed, was it audible?

This is why if I upgraded to a 290/X I would just get a reference card and buy a Gelid Icy Vision like I have on my 7970 cause it cools the hell out of my 7970 and is VERY quiet!
