Is this genre totally dead? I miss playing Unreal Tournament. UT2K4 is 100% dead as far as I can tell. UT3 bombed. Any thoughts?

Nah I don't remember if I have the game anymore. UT2k4 I just installed and theres like 3 servers total with people. I installed UT99 back in 2010 and it was still being played by a lot of people, mostly instagib.

Thanks for the suggestions guys but its not the same lol, I mean the old school (UT/Quake etc) jump up and down all over shooting laser cannon type games.

Closest thing is Tribes Ascend.

I have been wanting the return of Unreal Tournament. I played UT3 about a month back, I got lucky one night and found a server with about 6 people in it. Most servers are just loaded with bots. It was a lot of fun though. The glory days of UT99, miss them so much.

Have you checked out Titanfall? It isn't UT2k4, but what could really match being Bender versus Zoidberg in team deathmatch? It isn't COD. Despite not being either of these things, it is and arena shooter of sorts.

If you can't get behind Titanfall, there's always Nexuiz. It's pure arena shooting, though it isn't nearly as popular as other options. It's based off of Cryengine 3 if memory serves, so it should still have somewhat of a following.

All these modern "arena" shooters are just a faint shadow of the UT99 and Q3A. Those were the days. Only one of the modern ones i like is Killing Floor. Because it has a different concept, team vs Ai controlled enemies. So it was all about team work and usage of different classes.

Unreal 2K4 servers aren't dead. You just have to download a custom server list from one of the many. We regularly play 2K4 online, not many custom servers in the UK, but we connect to people over in the EU. There seems to be a huge private server list in Romania, can't recall where we got the list from though, my friend is Romanian and hooked us up. 2K4 is still the best of the lot!

My fave arena shooter is Cube2:Sauerbraten. Graphically it's pretty bad but IMO the game play is awesome because you move at ridiculously high speeds(and jump your own height) and guns don't recoil but push you back. It also has 100+ maps.

Do you remember Quake 3 Arena? Quake 3 was re-released with slightly tweaked game play (mainly to balance the game), under the name Quake Live. Quake Live is FREE TO PLAY. Quake Live still allows you to create your own highly customized config etc, like quake 3 did, also it has a fairly big playerbase and multiple game modes. Visit www.quakelive.com and give it a try!

Flashquake is also viable, but people should bare in mind, the people that play these online are absolute pros.

Yep I played for about 30 minutes, its very difficult. Its a lot like UT99.

You wanna play 1v1 with me sometime?
This was the first shooter I ever played it took me about 3 years to master(on a track pad) and there are still players who wipe the floor(me 1:2 them) with me. I recommend that you increase your FOV with "/fov ###" where ### is anything from 150° to 5° I use 130°.

Thanks I'll give it a shot, yeah I'd do 1v1 but I need to get the hang of it more LOL

I set my FOV to 150 and my mouse sensitivity to 12 and its helped but my keyboard kinda sucks (Dell OEM KB). Thinking about buying just a 10 Key goldtouch (Cherry mx) just for "wasd" type movement

Quake Live was pretty even as I remember it. I'm so far away from a pro as can be and sometimes even did well. Unless that has changed, I haven't played for a year or so.

That is because the players can't join servers that have an average skill much lower than their own skill, which makes the game more enjoyable for everyone.
