Asus R9 280X Fan noise issue

Hey.
I have a R9 280X Direct CU II card (2x8pin variant), which is making an annoying noise at low rpm's (20%). If the rpm's go higher (>25%) the noise disappears and the cards sounds as it should. What could be the reason and possible fix for this? I don't know hot to accurately describe the noise, but here is my best shot: mmmm (after heavy drinking).

That's what I've done already, but sometimes Afterburner doesn't start up correctly and I have to manually toggle fan control.

Can you tell which fan is the one making noise? Stick your finger in the middle of the.fan and stop them one at a time till yo know what one it is

Didn't have time to do that, but how will that make a difference? They both are exactly the same. The noise started when I once stopped the fans with the finger method, to check how loud my cooler was.

that way you know what fan is making the noise. and mabey instead of rma you can just get a fan from asus? one of my corsair fans set in the bios to the lowest speed would make the same noise you stated but one day it went away so who knows.

Well, I really don't want to go through RMA. Was hoping for a "there I fixed it" solution, like putting the card in the fridge or something. Will try to contact Asus or just waiting for it to go away.

It's because your GPU temp is getting higher when the fan is at 20%? what graphical or 3d programs are you using?
It's better to run the fan speed at 25% or higher for huger renderings but if you weren't rendering anything, make sure that your fan is completely safe then clean your graphics card heat sink. if doesn't work, set your graphics card to another PCI soucket. if again doesn't work, send it to warranty to check the solution and change your gpu heatsink and fan if needed.

The temps aren't getting higher and the problem only persists in idle/low load when the GPU isn't being used much. Under load the fan speeds up and it just sounds like a fan should. It's just possibly an issue with the fan itself, but I'm too lazy to take it in for warranty. Still searching for a "in-house" method that could fix that.

Weird, I also have an Asus DC2 280x (although the TOP 6+8 pin version) and I've noticed that under 30ish% I get a faint ticking noise from one of or both of the fans. Goes away if it gets warm (over 45C I've noticed) and/or fans go above 30%.

I've just made a custom fan profile in afterburner and have it as a startup program, works ok for me.

I've done the same thing, but I want PC to be whisper quiet when idle, guess I should have gone green for that. I did contact ASUS with the problem, asking maybe for a replacement fan.

If I'm reading this correctly the noise started when you stopped the fans.
It's probable you've just moved it/them little out of line, my VF3000A did the same thing when I did the same thing, the cure was to pull the fans gently outwards (downwards) to realign the bearings.
Obviously, with the system off and the power lead disconnected.

What makes you think that?! You must have seen too many melons.

Your problem is probably resonance. Check if at slightly higher or lower % the noise disappears.
In CCC --> enable Overdrive (put the checkmark) --> enable manual fan control+ click Apply... then move the slider up slightly+ click Apply.
If you cannot make the mmmmmm go away via this method, then it is not resonance.
If you can make the mmmmmm go away via this method, then it is resonance. Try to edit the BIOS with the tool in this thread: VBE7 - vBIOS Editor for Radeon HD 7000 series cards
If it is resonance, it is possible that some other hardware part in your PC, or the case itself, rumbles at the same frequency, thus amplifying the mmmmmmm noise, in which case you *could* be able to solve it by putting a rubber mat or wheels under the pc-case.

Will definitely try this! Sounds simple enough it could even work, thanks mate! Will post my results.

IF the sofware works on you card (that's not 100% sure yet, like it works on the Reference models), then by editing your videocard's bios, you can easily set your own fan-curve. For instance, let's say it is now set to run 27% until 70° C is reached. You could change that to 29% or 25% (you test the results) and get rid of the noise. Of course that is assuming the noise is just resonance, and not a bad fan couple.
