TIm help and what paste does MSI use for there 290 gaming twin frozr iv gpu?

I had both my msi 290 gamer twin froze iv coolers off as i curiously wanted to see what job they did on the Tim job plus to re align the thermal pad that was cockeyed. I seen they didn't go nuts with the paste and was really happy with there job when building there cards. I thought I'd may as well try some icd24c paste and it was horrible for temps.

I then cleaned it off and used some good Ok trusty as5 (and I don't want to hear how its conductive) the temps were better but not as good as the factory Tim they used. I know as5 needs 200hrs to do its job but I tinted the cooler and gpu and just added a small amount. I put it back together ran it and pulled apart to see how it spread.. It came out perfect with no extra goop hanging over the chip it's self. Did the same application and now I'm just going to see after a few heat/cool cycles before the temps start to drop. I closed up the case and ran heaven 4.0,on max settings run in loop to keep the heat built up. I left the house for an hour and came back and the heat coming out the rear exhaust was nice and hot. Card #1 was max Temp of 94c and the #2 card was at 85-87c. Before I pulled the cards apart they would sit in the low to mid 80's.

Do I just need to let the paste cure for the recommended 200 hrs till it drops to where it used to sit or is MSI using a special paste and if so what are they using?

Do yourself a favor and get a tube as AC AS4. Most companies are using AS4,3,2 now. It spreads nice, isn't conductive, works immediately and lasts a long time.

Agreed with erocker... Most companies are using better than AS5, and from what I have seen it can be some 5 degrees worse than even the average grey pastes out today.

Also do not use ICD24 on a bare die (has particulate that would leave a larger gap than normal TIM applications would, or even possibility of cracking the die)! I would stay away from it like the clap personally, but that is up to you!

I have had companies straight out admit they use MX2 like a religion....it is what is in most of the supplied TIM tubes.

I started using the Noctua NT-H1 paste, which looks like an MX-2 variant imo, and I'm sold on it... great performance/no burn-in time and haven't used AS5 since trying it.

Thanks guys. MX 2 vs MX 4 what's the difference? Memory express are always out of stock on the MX 2 paste as it must work so well.

Dave shot me a pm saying msi could be using some type of wax mixed it there paste and suggested that ac clean. Said it would cause the Tim I'm using to not bond to the HS. Would 99% isopropl work? That's what I used every single time.

I've been using MX2 for a long while, both CPUs and GPUs, and it's been just fine for me (main reason is that I bought 2 big tubes a while back on sale and still have some left)

Also, I stopped using AS5 on GPUs since my one GPU dodo'd out on me.

I looked for a week long and hard after getting my 290x at noctua p4 and mx4 were the 3 I got out of the lists of pastes I excluded liquids because the copper surface is shot so the gaps are too big. I focused on the 3 and after alot of thought settled on MX-4 and love it. dropped my temps crazy on my vanilla card.

Thank you.. Mx4 I know I can get on my way home wed night. I'll also have an autobody solution a friend is going to leave out tomorrow for me to grab.. It strips wax off paint so if they need to do paint touch UP's there's no issues.. I'll grab some mx and clean everything with that specific cleaner and post back on Thursday..

That's mx 4.. Mx2 is around the 5.* W/mk

What is that? W/mk?

iirc its watts per meter kelvin. This is how thermally conductive something is. the higher the number the better.

I was under the impression most companies use something similar to Shin Etsu.

Better to spread the TIM on GPUs yourself.
