Hi guys, my PC is a mediocre...

Pentium 4 - 3 GHz
2 GB Ram 400 DDR
Asus Mobo
ATi Radeon X1600 pro 512mb AGP
Creative SB XF-i Xtreme gamer
160 Gb 7200 HD Western
120 GB 7200 HD Seagate
And two DVD Writers

Here's a pic, i hope and pray to god it ain't to big, if it is could someone re-size it. :)

Now then, Ive been overclockin this graphics card since the day i had it, playing with it without blowing it up. lol Ive been using the latest ATi Tool program, With this GPU it REALLY doesn't like me messing with the memory speed slider, screen goes black instantly! so im just going to discuss Core speed, with the standard fan the most i could get out of it with out cooking it was 550-560 Mhz at approx 68 oC using the ATi Tool 3d square , recently i fitted a Zalman VF900 cooler to it, and now i can get it to run @ 615 Mhz with temp at 70-71 oC,

heres my questions, whats the max temp i can push the GPU to or recommended?

and Whats everyone else managed to squeeze from there X1600 pro, i need to compare mine after fitting the VF900?

Also off topic, anyone know when the next generation of Motherboards are out? i.e. 1066 MHz out now, whens the 1333 Mhz are due to be released? i read in CPC its 1333 Mhz, correct me if im wrong, im waiting for these to come out before i upgrade. :)

LOL I think you should put a 120mm fan on the back of your case and put a LED one.

You need better air flow through your case. That will help with your video card temperatures. 71~C is a little warm, not enough to cause catastrophic damage, but probably decreases performance and life span slightly. With that Zalman cooler on there I would expect slightly lower temps. I assume they get so high do to the lack of airflow through your case.

If you want to oc your vid cards memory try raising the volts a couple of notches in atitool (if you havent already).

I vote 120mm fans front and rear. Move the hard drives lower and shove some of the cables out of the way maybe.

AND Give it a clean. Maybe a careful job with the vacuum cleaner set to suck at a low rate woill do the trick safely (dont use it on full ball, less you suck in cables and god knows what else).

Finally, why are there cables running out the back side of the case through the pci slot area

You can clearly tell he got this from one of those normal PC stores... No we aren't since you barely put any effort into it. I would be more impressed if u used exotic cooling and a much more beefier GPU as well as voltmods, etc.

He comes here asking for help so you tell him his rig sucks and to buy more expensive parts?

Anyways dan, the vf900 is a great cooler for that card and you seem to have a nice overclock... 70 degrees is a bit hot though... especially for an x1600. Also it looks like you really dont have much airflow in your case... a 120mm fan on the rear would probably decrease the temps of everything.

The VF900 is definitely an excellent cooler, but it seems you have an airflow problem. Get an 120mm (12cm) fan to go on the back of your case, should help immensely.

And if it doesnt help your GPU temps, re-attach the cooler. When you put on the thermal paste, use a very thin layer. I would put maybe a tiny dot on the center of the gpu, then use the edge of a credit card to spread it even and thin to where you can almost see through it. Take a look at this article.

I also notice you didnt put heatsinks on the ramchips on the top of the video card, make sure to do that. The VF900 should have come with 8 ramsinks, 4 for the top and 4 for the bottom.

Sorry lol... I was sorta not thinking straight, parents were on the phone screaming at my relatives in china. >_>

Apart from that, 120mm fans ftw. Airflow is almost everything when you are using air cooling.

I'd suggest that you do something about those cables before buying/adding/modding anything. With some cable management your temps will probably drop significantly :)

i personally wouldn't have spent money buying a vf900 for an x1600Pro, the card is simply too weak, but getting it up to 615mhz is certainly a nice overclock, so it seems to have worked out for you

the problem now is that the slow memory on the card is probably killing you, so even though you got a good core overclock, the card is being held back by the terrible memory

i had the same problem with my x1600pro, the memory wouldn't overclock at all, a simple 10mhz increase caused massive artifacts and eventual crashing

perhaps looking into some sort of volt mod for the memory might give you more luck with overclocking it and give you some better results, plus with the added ram heatsinks it should be able to handle a little more voltage

70c isn't that bad of a temperature really, gpus can take temperatures that are a lot hotter than cpus can take, some easily get up into the 90c range without a problem, and it won't affect performance or really even the life of the card

He comes here asking for help so you tell him his rig sucks and to buy more expensive parts?

At least he didnt give him this answer to all his problems: "Get a 1950pro!" :p @Dan, youll be surprised at the differences when you get the kooling part of your case sorted with more fans. Also not only does cable management make your rig look sexier, it helps with overall airflow. ;)

My Motherboard is the Asus P4V8x-Mx

I totally agree that cables are a total mess, but thats me just wanting to connect things up to make sure things are working right, i only just recently bought the XF i sound card and the Zalman, But TK is right the system was bought from a shop, i regret it so much, ive built systems before which have been lovely but i was just lazy n bought one pre-done, :(

Can anyone recommend a quality 120mm fan for the back and 60mm for the case? the standard case cooler packed in.

Wazzledoozle, lol i never noticed the 4 ram chips underneath the card! :ohwell: i'll take the system apart and re build it and tidy it up,

The cable that goes outside the PCI slot, from the Zalmann, that leads to the zalmann fan controller which in the instructions tells me to fit outside, I think im stuck at adding more fans now, this is where i need help, i only have one fan plug on my motherboard and thats being used by the Zalman GPU fan the other is for the CPU fan, so where do i go from here?

i use the website www.scan.co.uk for my parts btw. lowest prices in UK on somethings.

Thanks for the help guys, cracking site! :D

You can buy fans that use the 4-pin molex power supply connectors.

and if you can't find those you can just buy the adaptors to let you connect a 3 pin fan to the 4 pin molex

FYI, Sapphire techs say that the ABSOLUTE Max temp for the GPU (X1xxx series) is 120c so your card isn't in danger. Obviously lower is better, you wouldn't want to see much over 90 in normal use. Before I got my 1950Pro I had an X1600, and it ran hotter than the 1950Pro which on the stock cooler topped out at around 70c, the X1600 idled at 60 and hit about 85 under load.

Cool so i can safely push it further???? :D Soundin good this, i don't think i'll OC anymore than 615-620 Mhz til ive fitted the other 4 ramsinks i forgot about!

But i will definitly spend time sorting out the cables and fitting another fan, when i next get paid! Great advice. :)

I wouldn't recommend pushing it even farther as heat tends to screw up your OC's and the card's life.

Got Air?

You need better air flow through your case. I agree, you need better air flow, definitely put a fan on the back of that rig.:wtf: Also, 71C is getting warm, some case fans, good cable management, etc. is going to make a big difference. :nutkick:

Oh and invest in a 120mm fan for the back of your case and one for the front if your case permits. That will help heaps

Ouch 71c, thats painful :eek: where to start first? Heres a list of areas I would look at to improve it airflow;

- 3rd party CPU cooler
- serious cable management (zipties!)
- 120mm fans front and back, try to get 3 pin 120mm fans to make use of the mobo fan headers.
- Try to OC your CPU once you dnoe all the above, your puter will thank you ;)
- run the VF900 @ 100%, you wont hear it. 71c is VERY toasty for your GPU, even on my 6800GT I had a VF900 on it didnt go past around 62c full load an that was with the snot clocked out of it.

Now about your vidcard memory, set atitool to use driver level OCing, then try to clock your memory.

hehe, overclocking my cpu is in the back of my mind, but i don't know the 1st thing about doing it yet, haven't looked into it, its a Socket 478 CPU but wouldn't mind squeezing out an extra 200-400 MHz, but ill ask for help when ive done the above!

I need to make sure its possible for me to overclock the CPU with this motherboard, this Mobo is very basic if anyone can shed any light on whether it can overclock that would be great its an Asus P4V8x-Mx, if it will then i will get a fan to suit the CPU, i'd like to do all this work in one day so all advice given now would be lovely, also what paste etc will i need to fit an aftermarket CPU fan?

Cheers!

Try to do something like this:
This is what mine looks like, 2-120mm fans on the front, blowing air in, 1-120mm in the back and top blowing air out, all blue fans off course.

my case doesn't allow fans at the front what so ever unfortunatly. :(

only got the space for one 120mm at the back, it'll soon be filled up! hehe

Been ages since i last posted!

Okay lads, jobs done, no pics as of yet! but temps are lower, fitted an akasa 120mm fan! was an arse to fit because the holes in the fan unit was to small for the screws supplied!

Anyways, Graphics cards temps are down by 6 oC after overclocking to 630Mhz!! thats a result!

tried to poke it a tad more and it locked up on me. lol

Bad news is, is that im one connection short to connect my 2nd case fan back on, missus is getting me the needed cable for me to sort this out, but im impressed for 30 mins work!!

if you would like pics just ask. :)
