I am going to upgrade my i5 750, To a FX-8320, I Have had a hard time looking for motherboards with a decent price and enough wattage to run the 125watt CPU, This board I found for $60 and it is rated at 140watts, And it has the 4 memory slots I need for my 8GB 2GBx4sticks of G.skill Ripjaw 1600,
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A78LMUSB3/specifications/

So I have a well vented Antec 300 , So it should stay fairly cool, And I will be more than happy with the one PCIe slot , My R9 270 should be more than I need. What do you think? Will this board burn up after a few days? LOL!

Hello,

Do you wish to overclock your new 8320 at some point?

It doesn't have heat sinks on the VRM, if you are not going to OC then that board should be fine, if you plan to OC then look for something better (tho this board might work but need to be careful).

I was thinking of setting it to its turbo speed of 4 ghz , So it should not stress it much, But after investigating more on this board I have a bad feeling I will get bad VRM throttling, I better just go with the MSI 990 GD65. unless a good but cheap 970 would work?

Or the ASUS M5A97 EVO R2.0 - designed for overclocking FX processors, and doesn't have more than one PCIe running at 16x (basically only one GPU slot). And probably cheaper / better value.

EDIT: If you're planning to not overclock, and just use the Turbo Boost when need be, you could save a couple of bucks and get the non-EVO version of the above ASUS motherboard.

That will work, 88 bucks is not too bad, what I meant was instead of letting the turbo take it to 4ghz I want to just set the CPU at a constant 4ghz

For more serious overclocking, you may want to either now or in the future get a good CPU cooler as well. I can recommend some now, or you can come back to the forum in the future for advice. Just depends on how far your budget stretches.

I got a 80mm Silentx on my i5 750 I can use, I still have the AMD bracket to it.

80mm Silenx won't do that good, I have the 4 pipe + 120mm SilenX, during gaming CPU spikes to 56C, but most of the time at 52C.

If Asus get M5A97 (Evo or non-Evo based on how far you want to OC), If gigabyte get 970A-UD3P or 990FX-UD3. You won't regret any of these.

Since I love trouble...

I don't think switching to a 8320 from a 750 is an upgrade, especially if you are just doing it for gaming. If you have specific apps that take advantage of the 8 cores that the 8320 has, than it is, but it really isn't worth the trouble if you think the 8320 will be faster in games--it probably won't be.

While I agree that in many cases, this kind of upgrading doesn't show massive improvement in games, in this case this is a good upgrade for different reasons. The FX 8320 outperforms the i5 750 in every regard for single core and multi-core performance. Moreover, despite being AMD, the FX 8320 consumes far less power than the 750, meaning the OP can save on their household electricity bills. So I believe it is a suitable upgrade at this point.

Hard to see how a 125 watt processor (8320) can use fewer watts than a 95 watt processor (750). Additionally, 750 kills 8320 in single core. OP, specifically what are you hoping to achieve by moving from the 750 to the 8320. Maybe this is a move you don't want to make if you haven't already done so.

I was using this website for comparison:

http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-750-vs-AMD-FX-8320

The wattage you've mentioned there is the maximum heat/wattage used by the CPU, known as the TDP. So the 8320 may have a higher TDP, but uses less wattage per year because it works further away from its TDP, whereas the 750 could have a lower TDP but spends most of its time being close to this TDP. Hence, it uses more electricity per year. And in terms of single core performance, it does depend on your benchmarking software.

But as this is an enthusiast forum, an upgrade from the 750 to the 8320 is more logical and beneficial than the upgrading of a 3770K to a 4770K by some who use this forum (not that I'm saying this is a bad idea at all!)

Upgrades are about workload and prices. They can also be about "I'm just bored with what I have now." Moving from a 750 to a 8320 isn't a smart move if the OP is thinking that it is going to get him more frames in game X--it may even be slower. Since the OP didn't post why they were upgrading, I'm just asking him/her to tell us that so we can double check that the thinking behind that is sound.

I am upgrading for gaming reasons. And I play many games, Not just particular games. But you would think since the PS4 and Xbox one use AMD 8 core CPU's that future games are eventually going to be naturally better with a 8 core chip such as the FX-8320. But I am not having trouble with bottlenecks on my i5 750 yet, This CPU has really been a great value. I have gamed with it since 2009, It has seen a 8800 GTS 320, 9800 GTX+ ATI 5850, GTX 650 Ti and now a ATI R9 270. But I am afraid she is not going to keep up with newer games before long. Most i5 750 owners upgraded theirs 2 years ago. I held on to mine. And I am afraid if I do not upgrade while I can, I will be up the creek by next year. When I had my 650 Ti there was a guy on overclock dot net, who had a FX-6300 and the same 650 Ti, And he always beat me in benchmarks. So if the FX-6300 can beat the 750 (but not by much that would be a worthless upgrade) Then the 8320 should be perfect especially with it's low price. And I have drooled over the 8 core AMD chips since they came out. Just something about having 8 cores, You know like the guy who has the 440 six pack, even though a more fuel efficient fuel injected 302 does better. But I also want to pass on the i5 750 and GTX 650 Ti to my nephew so he can run new games without having to get a new PS4 or Xbox one.

I agree with this 125%. I am running a 8350 @ 4.4 on a giga 990fxa -ud3 with a sapphire Vapor X and under full load (which is 24/7/365) I run right at 45f. A good board and great cooler will get you far.

Well I won't be overclocking really. The 8320 has a stock 3.5ghz speed and the turbo is 4.0ghz. All I want to do is set it at 4.0ghz and turn off the turbo. Also I decided to just go with this board ""http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...&cm_re=MSI_990FXA-GD80-_-13-130-649-_-Product "" Here my current ram I have http://www.gskill.com/en/product/f3-12800cl9q-8gbrl I know the MSI GD80 works with my old 1600 Ripjaws 8GB 4 sticks with 2GB each. Yes I know 2GB sticks are ancient. But memory prices are way to high and I refuse to get robbed. Besides 1600 speed ram is still decent for gaming. I just want it to work stable out of the box. Do you think I will be better off using it's stock cooler over my SilentX cooler ?

EDIT: I also found this board allot of people praise, I checked and it too is compatible with my ram. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131877

Do you think it will be any better than the MSI?

The stock cooler for the FX 8-core is notorious for being pretty loud under load, especially if you've keeping the clock speed at 4.0GHz. I would perhaps use the SilenX for quietness, but with only an 80mm fan, it may end up being noisy anyway as the FX 8320 gets pretty hot. A Hyper 212 would provide both low noise and great thermal performance.

They look pretty similar - go with whatever one you like better. One I would look out for is the ASUS Sabertooth 990FX/GEN3 as it has the newer PCIe 3.0 x16 slots, however its quite hard to find. That being said, there isn't a huge difference between PCIe 2.0 and 3.0 - perhaps a few FPS on most cards. So go with whatever one looks the nicest for your build. They are both solid boards with similar specifications.
