You can always do what @Solaris17 did and change the Tim on the cooler and have way lower temps that way.

Did it really have a big difference on a stock card/cooler? It wouldn't surprise me!

Well I trust Solaris as he's been a straight shooter so I wouldn't know why he would lie. He helped me out a lot on paste for my card when I had heating issues and it solved my problem.

Benchmark Scores I don't play benchmarks.
Toms Hardware has a article on cooling the R9 290X using the Acrtic Accelero: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/r9-290-accelero-xtreme-290,review-32828.html
Can't speak about the other coolers but I've recently shut my XFX DD 'cooled' HD7950 up with the AMD variant of the Icy Vision.
The little Gelid DOES come plenty of small aluminium heatsinks for the VRAM, but I doubt it'll have a VRM cooler block that suits the R9 290X specifically, although it shouldn't be too difficult to find a solution. ;)
Of those mentioned so far it's probably the smallest, lightest and by far away the cheapest.
The fans CAN be controlled: Connect the lead to a motherboard header and control the speed through BIOS or connect to a manual controller (I've opted for the Zalman FanMate ), you can check the speed through plenty of hardware monitoring utilities and after a little while you can set the speed that suits you just by the sound. ;)
For my setup (HD 7950 940/1450 OC) 1900 RPM is nearly silent and not even Furmark can push it over 70C.

It had a huge difference. My thermal cap was lowered by ALOT probably has something to do with the moon having a smoother surface then the copper block.

What memory is considered superior/inferior? I've heard of cards using Hynix, Elipdia (sp?) and Samsung. From what I've read so far, Samsung is the best.

Thanks... I looked in the GPU database and it doesn't typically show what mem is used. Are there any OEM cards that specifically use one memory type over another?

Entertaining thread as well as informative. That copper did look rough, as did the bubblegum TIM. Results are astounding, well done!

I despise XFX for those stupid warrantee stickers!!!

You live in the US so why it matter to you ?, removal of the stickers is permitted in the US \ Canada. And asking a US techy or any thing why it not allowed in other please is pointless as why would they know even though why they would say honestly.

If you phone them they can be much enlightenment found :p

Haven't heard that one before. So if I rip off those stickers and try an RMA, they won't reject?

I always open a ticket these days as when i was asking to fit a cooler on my 6970 they said always ask so that's what i do now so open a ticket asking to take the cooler off and if no one reply's in a timely manner give them a call and they will reply to your ticket and just ok it with you.

The stickers on the cards for the US cards due to the fact that all the cards come from the same place and it's easier for them to just put stickers on all the cards, which is good when ya think about it as some one not to sure about what they are doing would hopefully take notice of them.

So yes if you live in the US\Canada.

And i have been saying it on these forums for some years now lol.

And what Solaris17 did helped me about 2c using MX-4, but i am sure some don't get done as well as others and i bet some places don't use s good paste too.

Wow, the used reference 290x prices seem to keep falling, most in the low $300's, some under $300!

The one problem you have to remember when looking at used 290X cards is that if they were used for mining then they are going to have alot of wear and tear on them. I would suggest buying a brand if you do from a company that allows you to transfer the warranty and comes with most (If not all) the peripherals.

I bit the bullet and paid $299.99 for a Sapphire yesterday evening. A guy had 6 of them buy it now, and they went quick. Claims they are perfect, never OC'd, never flashed. Comes with all original packaging minus the BF4 code (I saw in his feedback that he sold a bunch of BF4 codes back in Jan). He doesn't accept returns, so I'll have to rely on eBay's guarantee. Supposedly will arrive Fri or Sat (I haven't gotten a shipping confirmation yet).

Wish me luck!!!

If he had 6, chances are they were used for a mining machine. Sapphire are pretty good though about honoring warranties and transference in my experience so long as you have at least most of the original packaging components. You should be more than fine, just make sure to stress test it before hand to make sure it does not have problems.

Wishing you luck and welcome to the Hawaii club :)

I have no doubt they were solid state pick-axes :) We'll see and I'll report back after I get and test... just hope it arrives Fri or Sat!!!

I see you have 3 PC 290x's - mining or Tri-Fire?

I have no doubt they were solid state pick-axes :) We'll see and I'll report back after I get and test... just hope it arrives Fri or Sat!!!

I see you have 3 PC 290x's - mining or Tri-Fire?
No I don't mine with my cards (I personally do not like mining mostly because of what it did to the GPU market), its for a high resolution gaming setup currently at 5760x1080p. Im about to sell a pair of my monitors (Of the trio) and buy the new Asus 4k display because im crazy like that :)

Sweet, what size is the 4K?

And I've been following the prices, it's been nothing short of nutz, watching cards go up over the $900 mark on retail sites. Now prices have collapsed. The big Litecoin rush.

28inch, im waiting for it to be released still (Hoping it has displayport 1.2a capabilities) this month.

It crashed just recently due to Dogecoin cutting the block rates in half. It was the last cryptocurrency that had any value to mine left (For the average miner mind you) so once it fell to this level everyone is selling their equipment off by the truckload. Its good for gamers so long as you pick a company with a good warranty reputation in my book because you can get some real nice cards for a decent price (A 290X for 300 is an awesome deal).

I plan on playing in 4k from this point forward and dropping eyefinity, I want a secondary monitor because of the work I do from home makes things alot easier. But recently multi-monitor systems and screens that have thin bezels have started falling off so it makes it hard to do (along with full support in games).

Interesting about Dogecoin, what about Litecoin? That was what everyone was mentioning relative to the 290x. The ROI was never that great to begin with, and I suspect there was a diminishing supply to be found. I'm a noob when it comes to mining if you couldn't tell. And yea, thanks to the crash, I'll have my first top-of the line single GPU I've ever owned, assuming the one I get is A-ok.

Don't you mean displayport version 1.3?
