Need help with which is better for gaming.

I need some help. The Asus z97 Sabertooth only accept 1866 mhz ram speeds. Nothing higher. I plan on playing games a lot. So would I be better off getting a different motherboard that accepts high speed ram? I was looking at the Asus MAXIMUS VII HERO, It accepts ram speeds from 1333 mhz to 3200 mhz DDR3. Would I need faster ram then 1866 mhz? Is anything over 16 gig of ram waste?

If all you are doing is gaming, then yes, anything over 16 gigs is a waste. Really, the majority game with 8 and are fine. As to RAM speeds, I see no point in going above 1866 on an intel platform. Really, 1600 is perfectly adequate.

from what i have seen with intel boards its better to have more ram at slower speeds than less ram at faster speeds. apparently this is not as true for amd.

The only reason you would want to using anything above 1600 is if you were using the IGP rather than adding a video card. Faster RAM will get you more frames per second from the IGP.

Then why do they make ram speeds up to 3200 mhz and motherboards that support up to 64 gb of ram?

Short answer: Because they can. Longer answer: Because there are some people that actually need much faster RAM or in much greater quantities, such as video editing, CAD, and other intensive operations that I can only imagine. Also, as was said, AMD chips do benefit from faster RAM.

But with playing games on an Intel platform, you are pretty much good to use 8GB of DDR3-1600 RAM. But no one is stopping you from getting more or faster RAM, if that's your preference.

EDIT: Some people also just like the cushion, or comfort zone provided, or for bragging rights, or for that irresistable urge to super-upgrade that many people have. If you want to go further, it won't hurt anything.

Anything more than 1600 is a waste, unless you need it for benching, video editing, or other huge memory hogs. Gaming on an Intel with more than 8 gigs is also a waste of money.

If you plan on making a ram disk, very fast, get 16, otherwise 8 GB will do just fine.

I agree, I use 1866 but thats because of some apps I use along with gaming. Anything unless your using an APU from AMD and running on the IGPU above 1866 for the gamer is going to not give you any noticeable benefits in a game along with beyond 16gb. I have 16gb of DDR3 1866 and in all honesty I never go above (Well at least much if I do) 8gb so that should be more than enough for a straight up gaming machine.

I would say get a good cas latency (Like 9) 1600 or 1866 set for gaming and nothing beyond using only 2 sticks of 2x4gb or 2x8gb.

ram speed does not matter at ALL anything over ddr3 1600 is a waste of money UNLESS you are using a APU and in that case get the fastest kit you can
its not the motherboard limiting the ram speed its the CPU
