I'd be using it right now if I could. I just hope publishers will get onboard. I can really only see indies and CD Projekt RED publishing on it. I will look there to buy games first though because I would rather a DRM free client replace Steam as #1 digital game publisher.

Oh, they wouldn't be able to get ALL games on it, but GoG stands by their "No DRM" promise, which means they'll have their entire library on it, if nothing else. I have several games with them, and I don't mind the auto-updates :)

So how does it work? Does it do the DOS games as well, is it all of their games, can you add games on your own? I really wish people would write stuff instead of just linking to videos and say "this cooooool lulxz"

Think of it as GOG Downloader with some Steam features (chat, achievements, and the like).

Honestly I think GoG has been dying for a few years. I think they are a good company but I seriously doubt they had any capitol left. I think this is their last ditch effort at making it in the digital game industry. Granted its all speculation but promise a DRM free gaming environment in a world riddled by DRM and throw some AAA titles on the front page on sale for 50+% off looks like a good recipe for anyone.

but will it last?

Could be right, but does it matter to us? As someone with games on GoG, something that helps me manage them without getting in my way playing them is a good thing. If it's just because the company may be failing, it really doesn't matter. I don't have to pay for it, I have no extra "other" investment in the interface. I've always been inclined to check GoG when I was purchasing a game, or looking for a deal on an older game, this just makes it more likely that I'll hit their page "just because" :)

Publishers gobble up some 80-90% of game profits. CD Projekt self-publishes as well as publishing for other developers at rates that are competitive with, if not beats Steam. They're also constantly making money from GOG which costs them next to nothing to run. CD Projekt has a business model that is doing extremely well.

Witcher 3 coming out soon is going to cause another surge in their market price and finances. We already know they are pumping that money into two coming titles ("They" and "Cyberpunk 2077") as well as GOG Galaxy.

I buy games from GOG whenever possible because it is the model for the future. This refusal to trust people that has been perpetrated by the software, game, film, and music industries needs to end and they're the only one so far that are serious about doing it.

I think GOG is here to stay. The question is whether or not AAA publishers get on board. The only way they will is if they perceive themselves as losing money because they aren't on GOG. Don't get me wrong, AAA publishers have put a lot of older titles on GOG but to go from publishing old games to publishing new releases on GOG, that's what I'm looking for.

Great ANOTHER client.

As much as I love GoG for all that they stand for, I am not installing another client. I'm quite happy with everything being on steam thankyouverymuch. I have UPlay, Origin, Steam, Battle.net Client, and now yet another one on its way so that I can get automatic updates for games I bought on GoG.

I know Valve and every other company that creates some form of DRM are evil nasty men, but seriously. I'd like to have all my games activated on steam, because I hate them the least, and they are the most refined platform. I have no problem activating my games on there, and I can play offline if I so wish.

I not see it as another client, I see it like another option, Valve tend to be like M$:"We know what it is better for you, like it or not", and the relative new offline option was introduced in Steam because GoG started to gain customers, I still see the Valve vs GoG like rent vs owned gaming, and are many places where the internet it is not good or not at all, at my grandparent house(modem internet, 56k) I can install the game from GoG(the kit was saved on external hdd) and play, try to do that on Steam...and I am tired to be seen by gaming industry like a deliquent, after I buy their games...my 2c

I seem to remember hearing the same conjectures whenever GoG announced their very generous return policy. People conjectured that other people would buy a game, beat it, and then return it under the auspices of it "not working" on their computer. It's been months, and GoG didn't wither away and die. I think that this is exactly the same natural evolution of a digital store front that Origin and Uplay have taken.

Unfortunately, I think GoG is coming to the plate a little too late on this one. While their heart is in the right place (basically offering Steam without the DRM is awesome), I don't think they've got the juice to make a dent in the market. AAA publishers will immediately eschew the idea, because openly saying some of these things will make investors immediately withdraw. Indies and old games are more than worth exploring, but unless your full time job is playing games I don't see how you can chew through a couple decades of classic titles and maintain a grip on more modern ones.

I hope that I'm wrong, but I don't see GoG's galaxy replacing Steam. They don't have the more modern library, and their stance on DRM is counter to the rather rigid belief this industry maintains. GoG doesn't really outline anything special that would get the average user to switch from Steam or Origin (and saying that makes me feel dirty, considering how much I hate Origin). They cannot offer discounts, that Valve and EA won't match. They can offer a deeper library, but younger gamers aren't going to be lining up for System Shock 2 whenever Bioshock blew it out of the water in every way. Without something special to offer GoG Galaxy will live or die based on exclusive content only.

Now before I get hate, the history of gaming matters too little to people who are still cutting their teeth. Bioshock built on System Shock 2 and corrected the glaring flaws. COD is nothing without the design techniques and successes of its predecessors. Younger gamers cannot see the influences of Tribes, Counter Strike, and Golden Eye in modern games. But be realistic here; go back and play some of those games. They haven't aged well, and even the thickest of nostalgia goggles won't make it easier to determine which polygonal blob you are. Knowing how far we've come is surprising, knowing what games pioneered a genre is interesting, but despite historical significance I'd give up System Shock 2 (even with the "HD" reskinning) for Bioshock any day of the week on playability alone. How GoG plans to bridge the nostalgia gap with a client is beyond me, but I'm willing to listen.

The problem being with Steam is that they basically run a monopoly on the digital game distribution service right now. There are other clients, yes, but Steam is deeply rooted and is never going away. The problem isn't their hold however - Steam is a great platform with a great team behind it and they are very (more than in some cases) fair and are great to the community. The problem is since they have no REAL competition, they are unfortunately lacking in a few areas that they really need to fix. UI, Greenlight, etc. The Greenlight program is an absolute mess in my opinion, and while I do see the merit in it, there is so much absolute shit on Steam that it becomes a pain in the ass to filter through. Steam's support, while it can be helpful, a lot of the time just relies on the community - I've heard horror stories a lot of the times people have to talk to them. The store is cluttered to all hell, a lot to do with Greenlight, and the UI is desperately begging for a redesign in my opinion. I think Galaxy could be a push for them to maybe help with some of that, but I do not see anything ever replacing Steam to be honest. Origin blows, and I'm not even sure of the other clients really.

GoG has limited appeal to AAA games publishers due to their requirement that the games they sell must be DRM free. Also almost all of their games must be able to run on Win XP, Vista, 7 and 8. I've noticed that on Steam more and more games are being listed that aren't supported for XP. Despite whether I think it's a good idea to still be running XP without MS support it remains a fact that a lot of people out there are still using XP. I've seen some old games on GoG that if you were to buy the physical disk it would be a lot more $$$ because so few disks still out there for some games. As long as GoG sticks to what they have been doing then I see no reason why they wouldn't have a future.

It's a good thing that there are options like GoG and Origin. I really like Steam but they could turn evil on us one day. Unlikely during Gabe Newell's leadership.

There is one advantage to AAA publishers GOG offers over Steam: integration is practically free because CD Projekt does it for them. With Steam, publishers have to integrate at least an install script to make it work. Many titles also incorporate the Steam API which takes some work.

Downside is GoG has zero market compared to Steam. That lil bit of extra work means absolutely nothing compared to the market exposure they gain.

GOG sells itself, Steam doesn't. If GOG matches Steam's sales, Steam's appeal vanishes instantly.

And marketing? Haven't seen to many ads in mainstream media for GoG. Honestly the only place I have ever seen them is people talking about it on TPU. Steam is the industry standard. Sorry chum but GoG has HUGE shoes to fill.
