UEFI bios for reference R9 290X?

I searched and couldn't find anything, sorry if this has been asked/answered already.

I have an XFX R9 290X Core Edition. I want to boot in full UEFI mode on my Asus P8Z77-I Deluxe and keep the boot time as minimal as possible. Yes, I'm aware it's only a few seconds quicker. As it stands now, the VGA BIOS isn't compatible in full UEFI boot.

I looked in the VGA Bios area but couldn't find anything that was called out as a UEFI version. I've contacted XFX and they say they don't have one available, but as far as I know Asus and Sapphire do.

Is there a way to locate this on here that I'm missing?

Many thanks.

Hi

Welcome to TPU

Is there a way to locate this on here that I'm missing?
No

Just my two cents; Sell the XFX R9 290X Core Edition before flashing the card and invalidating the warranty.
[Purchase a R290x from another manufacturer that supports UEFI out of the box]

just curious if you ever got this sorted out. Just built my first AMD rig ever and was astounded to find out that the nvidia rig i built a year prior had full uefi support and i couldnt boot uefi with this one. I thought i had configured something incorrectly somewhere but no matter what i did, no uefi support from the gpus.

Seriously... what were they thinking?

Anyone aware of the brands that do have a UEFI capable bios? I'm not too ecstatic about running a different brand bios on my cArd (I'm anal like that) but for the sake of UEFI so be it :p

FWIW/FTR I have now tried several bios on my xfx r290x and it seems either all/most of these cards don't support UEFI or it isn't only based/controlled/due to the bios/software and has a hardware component as well which is missing from the XFX boards (surprise surprise).

Ive been beaten.

The Double Dissipation 290X cards do it even says it right on the front of the box. In fact some of the 290 DD's do according to this link ( pics )
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150701&cm_re=r9_290-_-14-150-701-_-Product

Last time i tried upload my bios to TPU it said it was already there which is BS ( unless it has been updated recently ..

Again it says it's there already but it not showing \some thing wrong or even some one added wrong info.

even the bios version don't match

http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/index.php?architecture=ATI&manufacturer=XFX&model=R9 290X&interface=&memType=&memSize=

Thinking mines a newer version but still cannot upload it and it might be your issue as it looks like UEFI might of been added shortly later.

Hi

What is this UEFI bios thing about? I have a reference 290X.

As far as I am aware UEFI bios [motherboard] & UEFI GOP vbios [GPU] when paired with windows 8.0/8.1 access time increases when [fast boot] is set. Edit: [Ultra Fast Boot]

Edit: General Info here

Thanks. I wasn't aware of that but I use Windows 7 anyway.

Maybe your right and I was just using the wrong bioses. Any chance you can toss yours (uber and quiet) into a drop box?

Worst case I can test the theory (that it's hardware related as well)

Best case we will finally get UEFI!

Is anyone able to run their reference cards in UEFI? (That has flashed to a UEFI capable bios?). I guess perhaps it's much more rare of a feature among this generations AMD bioses. Doesn't make sense but ultimately it doesn't have to lol.

Bet your tail feather next gens cards will all have it. Just like ipv4 - legacy will slowly be phased out over the next decade or so I suspect.

My msi gaming tf iv card has UEFI. Goto the msi 290(x) and lightning club and look at the op. There's a legacy and UEFI bios linked there. That's about the only UEFI and legacy labeled BIOS here from what I've seen.

Oh boy - MSI it is then! Thanks for the heads up. I just tried the xfx ones that were linked and while they work like a charm compared to the asus ones I've tried (games just crash) they didn't have UEFI either.

(Still hoping the guy with the UEFI xfx bios can get it up somewhere)

Until then I'll try the MSI out and let ya know how it turns out :p

Thanks again!

No problamo! Is that the uber or quiet or both? (Not home so can't check ATM)

I know I'm becoming needy here - but if it's one, mind tossing up the other as well? :)

Either way thank you very much! Here's to hoping it works. If so this is about to become a very popular file :p

home now, just got it! Flashing commencing :p (btw I realized it was the DD cards which only have 1 bios. Well 1 bios and 1 backup of the identical bios)

Back!!

well... good news is the bios works on the cards well. I will continue using it if for nothing else, the 50 extra MHz it runs at by default. Better fan profiles too. It appears you have the DD "black" edition or w/e it is right?

Anyhow, the most important part is unfortunately unworking. I'm left with a black screen and a broken heart QQ lol. It appears that their is something on cards hardware wise which enables UEFI or otherwise. Like other UEFI enabled bios ive tried - if I switch to UEFI, it boots to unrecoverable blackness. The only way to get it back is to either reset cmos, or switch to the other bios (assuming you have a non uefi bios on) which in the case of my mobo atleast (formula-z) it will boot saying "this vga doesn't support uefi" and automatically change it back for you.

The other bios doesn't do that because it DOES support UEFI. Seems the card itself doesn't.

Very disappointing, but a learning experience nonetheless. Hopefully it stops others from the same quest ive been on for a week+ now trying to get uefi up and running. Guess I shoulda bought a uefi complaint card, then again I wouldn't have imagined in my wildest dreams a card that came out a very very long time after the 780 wouldn't have it.

Ah well, guess its time to use them for what theyre made for. Smooth as a babies bootay @ 3680x1920 too!

Thank you very very much for trying to help AsRock  If techpower powers that be read this - get his bios in your database because it IS different than what you have available.
