Update firmware on external HDD

Is it possible to update firmware on external HHD? My 2x 500GB Seagate external drives have very old firmware, i have downloaded newest version from Seagate website, but when i try to update it - it doesn't detect any drives connected through USB, so i guess it's possible only update firmware in drives connected through SATA?

Put it on SATA , after you make backup of your data...

too much hassle to take them out of cases.
