Forget TR, Square need to make another Kane and Lynch.
OORAH! I played the shit out of Kane & Lynch 2 on the hardest mode several times through. A real challenge but worth the time.

Looking forward to Just Cause 3 too. Avalanche has traveled to Costa Rica to take audio/video samples from dense jungle for "future games", no doubt Just Cause 3 being the primary one.

Can't we all agree that Far Cry 3 has taken over as a better version(game) of Just Cause? When you're on those hang gliders, or the wing suit, into a parachute, I think I'm playing Just Cause, but I am happy that's not actually Just Cause : )

I disagree, they're both good games in their own right with key differences. Just Cause has always been more over the top action with grapple and parachute stunts. Far Cry 3's parachute element is very minimal and only used for landing, and it has no grapple. The combination of Just Cause 2's parachute and grapple make for a rather efficient travel system in and of itself, which comes in handy in places you've not unlocked for fast travel.

You also have access to WAY more vehicles in Just Cause, and it has some rather challenging vehicle racing events on land, sea and air. The only things I feel Just Cause could improve upon are smoother, more consistent vehicle grapples, and either an attach/detach cover system, or at least combining certain height objects in the world with an appropriate crouch height.

Let's be clear though, there are a multitude of things you can do in Just Cause 2 that you can't do in Far Cry 3. Now word is Far Cry 4 WILL have a grapple, but as far as I know it will only be used for climbing and descending the Himalayan cliffs.

Far Cry has always been more tactical, and Just Cause has always been more arcade. There are definitely key differences, even now.[/QUOTE]

My problem with Just Cause is that on the one hand it presents interesting physics and elements, such as for when using a parachute, however at the same time it's over the top - at times I feel like I'm playing more of a GTA/Saints Row game.
Maybe that's why I don't quite get it.

I don't think its meant to take itself so seriously. Its just meant to be fun. It's like watching a James Bond film. They are also outlandish, unbelievable, and over the top. But for the most part, they are fun to watch if you don't take them too seriously.

Just Cause was so much better than Just Cause 2. There were a lot more missions with a lot more variety and the town takeover was much, much better. Compared to Just Cause, there isn't much I like in Just Cause 2.

Far Cry 3 doesn't feel like Just Cause to me at all. There's no police/government in Far Cry 3, there's animals in Far Cry 3, Far Cry 3 can use stealth, combat feels like Rambo in Just Cause 2 where it feels more like a Delta Force game in Far Cry 3, and you can't ever fly any helicopters/planes in Far Cry 3.

I've played both Kane & Lynch games. The only thing that really makes them stand out is that it supports co-op. Generally speaking, I don't really care for them. They're too short and on rails.

Well i kinda agree JC1 was better mission wise but driving was terrible, lets hope that part of the game gets better next time around.

I hope you mean the later DF games 1st\2nd of those games were a bitch to run on a comp but they made that 3rd it ran much better but it was total crap compared.

Not much to say about K&L i played the demo of the 1st and that was enough as it was problem after problem and if a company cannot make a good demo there is no chance i spending money on it.

It's a mixed bag comparing JC1 & 2. Yes, you had more missions in 1, and some were pretty good, but you also had crap driving mechanics, crap stiff-as-a-board enemy death animations, and the lack of being able to grapple to anything was REALLY tedious at times. It lacked a lot of flow just because of that alone. I recall a lot of ridiculous escapes through steep jungle terrain quite often due to lack of being able to grapple escape.

Yeah JC is a bit like Bond meets NOLF, you've got the spy element but with cheesy, TV show spy background music and no real stealth element. It's a dichotomy of two contrasting elements. Instead of the Sam Fisher tactics a one man spy operation would normally entail, you go in like Rambo because the draw is the bolder than life, risk taking stunts Rico pulls off. He's more like a cartoon character than a real protagonist, but it's still fun.

Had to disable the motion blur in JC because they went overboard with it. The fastest cars were also pretty difficult to drive if memory serves. Have to coast most of the time.

Yeah it was not perfect not even with a controller.

I hate blur in any game as i find it way over done in any game. Yeah there not great in JC2 but JC1 was terrible kinda like the early SR as i remember getting out of the prison getting in to a car and thought WTF this supposed of been competition to GTA and thought hell no..

Like games games i just hope they fine tune and add more content and not just more fancy graphics, i know for sure that i enjoyed games like DA1 more than DA2 just going by how you controlled the char.

I buy JC3 even if they just added more verity of content and tweaked it and did not even bother changing the graphics but so many would complain.

Most of these games have pretty bad car physics, exacerbated by the digital input of a keyboard. Though Far Cry 3 driving is ok all things considered.
My expectation at this point in gaming development, is that as a minimum all these action adventure titles should have cars that handle no worse than Gran Turismo 2 with an analogue game pad. I use to love exploring the city in Mafia II but the controls were pretty awful.

Then again, have you ever had to drive in a TR game?

Yes, and it was horrible. I think it was TR Anniversary, trying to drive that stupid Ducate (sp?) motorcyle....it was SUCH a long ride, and the physics and control were awful....input was very sensitive. Add to that the save point was about 80% of the drive in, and you had a recipe for multiple deaths and reloads!!! It made me rage-quit a few times, I'm ashamed to say.

Isn't it ironic that the original TR games were slammed for their sexism and it was claimed the visual efforts put into Lara over shadowed the game play.
Yet now Lara is more in line with the femi-nazi movement and yet the game is worse.

Just sayin..

I don't think Lara overshadowed gameplay in classic games. All those amazing locations in Egypt, Greece, pyramids, all those mazes, Halls of seasons, tombs and ruins made this game memorable. Of course Lara was important as a character too. Her witty oneliners delivered by Jonell Elliott's voice made it perfect.

I never played TR for staring at her butt/boobs.

Things went downhill when they released LAU trilogy with momma plot and focused all games on her personality and that sucked. They realized that and rebooted series and turned it into shootery crap for casual players. I guess it's pretty late. Wish Core Design were around

I thought the LAU trilogy was pretty good..sort of a reboot itself. I think they kept the puzzle and climbing and tomb elements, and actually had controls that mostly worked on the mouse and keyboard. Add to that some updated graphics, and I felt they were worthy of the name. Let's not forget, the worst of the bunch, AOD was the last in the first line!

AoD has the most interesting plot (hell, Murti Schofield is a genius), voice acting, Lara's model, level design and animations amongst classics. I can't see how it's the worst. Played PS2 and PC versions never encountered a single bug.

Legend and Underworld had enough material and potential to be great games but they failed miserably because of the lame plot and stupid decisions. They cut so many stuff out, left almost nothing just 2-3 hour gameplay. Beta/alpha screens looked so amazing. What a busted flush. And dafuq they brought Natla back is beyond me.

I still prefer Tomb Raider 3. It's still my all time favorite Tomb Raider and i don't care what everyone say about it. The worlds were amazing and despite it's age, the starting Pacific bay is still jaw dropping and i loved exploring those cliffs and and tribe settlements, the India jungle was a real joy to explore, i also loved that dark, rainy and dirty London or the rocky desert Nevada. Or the frozen Antarctica with that ice breaker. So many memorable moments i've never ever witnessed in any other TR game.
It was my first Tomb Raider game, but after trying TR1 and TR2 and also all the ones that came after it and none ever felt so good. Levels were boring to explore, puzzles and tricks to get around things weren't as engaging, it just wasn't as good, period. I wish they'd just refresh it with new graphics engine and don't change a thing. I don' really like those key pressing sequences or the whip nonsense to climb around in new ones. It's so annyoing when developers think every new game has to be more fiddly and has more stuff attached to it. It's all unnecessary. Just give me amazing worlds to explore like i could in TR3 and i'll be a happy monkey.

Agreed, I didn't see the problem - especially back when the pixelated boobs weren't much better than the strippers in Duke 3d.

Then again the new Lara isn't all that femi-nazi as a character, but she's clearly been redesigned to appeal to social sensitivities in hopes of making her more average and appealing.
Because you know a pretty 5' 7" 120lb semi muscular woman, with a small waist and respectable bust, that can run - jump - kick - shoot - and dodge bullets, is definitely average. Is there a weird smiley face I can use here? Oh well, just imagine I put one.

Things went downhill when they released LAU trilogy with momma plot and focused all games on her personality and that sucked. They realized that and rebooted series and turned it into shootery crap for casual players. I guess it's pretty late. Wish Core Design were around

But isn't that what they do with all 'hardcore' characters in any form of media? They make them out to be these giants of humanity and then when material runs dry or they want to hook a new demographic, they start to unravel the gentle giant within or some other nauseating corporate strategy.

You're absolutely right. They add drama just to make their characters more "human", and they hope that people will buy it. It's just another cliché and it's getting really old. They talk about realism but their games are full of physics denying bugs and glitches. Gameplay is more important. Design new areas, make decent AI, add puzzles reduce that fucking crazy amount of human enemies. Make it more mysterious.

My fave TRs have been Anniversary, Legend, and Underwolrd, in that order, although Underworld leaves a bad taste in my mouth because that's where the decline started via dumbed down relic gathering that became kicking clay pots out in open.

In it's hey day I spent most of my time strategizing tombs, relics, boss fights and platforming, and even once you get them figured out you still had to muster the dexterity and timing needed. Back then TR was never about being side tracked by Lara because it was always about her work instead.

Thief sheesh don't get me started that was a total fail and OMG the unreal engine shit i know a lot like it but sorry it's a sucky game engine. At least TR had some things going for it and personally found it playable as well as enjoyable were as Thief it's just one big fuck up were gameplay comes.

QFT!!! I don't get why so may people think UE is the greatest engine ever made, it blows. Epic couldn't even make UT3 and GoW PC versions without horrible stuttering and sluggish texture loading, and their post effects have never been very good. In fact few devs have ever made truly great looking games with it without some kind of technical problems. Rocksteady's Batman games being one exception, but even then, the underground apt ruins in Arkham City exhibited terrible stuttering.
