Haswell-E

Basically was looking to get an i7-4790k and an asus MAXIMUS VII HERO or ASRock Z97 Extreme6 LGA 1150

and an ASUS DirectCU II GTX780TI-DC2OC-3GD5 G-SYNC 8-16GB(Plan with the GPU is wait then when priced drop buy another and would love it if i can put 2 into 2x16 3.0 which u cant do with the 1150) Then out of the blue I see Asrock saying stuff about x99 and mentions Haswell-e will have faster CPU. Plus it seems every feature is stealing lanes like SATA or m2. etc and another benefit is more CPU Core and ddr4,seems like it’s a good buy was wondering what you guys think.

Haswell-E and Haswell share the same CPU speeds clock to clock as they are the same architecture. It is an enthusiast platform and costs a lot more but starts with a 6 core 12 thread model all the way up to 8 core 16 thread. You do not need it for your build and it costs a whole lot more motherboard wise, CPU wise, and ram wise as its starting on DDR4 (Which will not benefit you by the sound of things your doing).

Stick with your previous choices.

Haswell-E is still Haswell, so single-threaded performance will be identical to the LGA1150 parts. The choice will really depend on what you want to do with the system. Do you run any applications that use >4 cores? The only game I know of that does is Crysis 3, although I don't know about the parallelism of future games. If you can't use the extra cores then you won't see better performance with Haswell-E. If you just want 2-way SLI, then the Z97/4790K system is great. PCIe 3.0 x8 is enough for the GPU (there is basically 0 difference in doubling PCIE bandwidth on a GTX Titan),.

If you are looking for M.2, the additional PCIe lanes might be a compelling reason to buy a X99 system. If you want to use 2-way SLI with M.2 x4 or 3-way SLI (with or without M.2 x4), then Haswell-E is the only way to do it (NVidia locks out SLI on cards with less than 8 PCIe lanes). However, you should keep in mind that with Haswell-E, Intel is segregating its parts by offering fewer PCIe lanes in its cheapest part. The 5820K will only have 24 PCIe lanes while you need to buy the 5930K to get 40 PCIe lanes. I'm not sure how motherboard manufacturers will allocate lanes when using the 5820K; some may disable their M.2 slots when you use the cheaper CPU.

The biggest disadvantage to Haswell-E will be price. DDR4 will likely have an early adopter premium and just like every memory transition also likely will not outperform the mid-priced DDR3 on the market. The entire platform is also more expensive. I would expect to spend an extra ~$300 to get a X99/5820K system or ~$600 to go to a X99/5930K system compared to the Z97/4790K system.

Is it worth the extra $300-$600? In my opinion, no. My policy has always been that instead of buying the expensive enthusiast parts, just buy mid range parts and replace them more often. Right now there are no widely available M.2 x4 SSD anyway. The Skylake platform will have many more PCIe lanes when it comes out in 2015/2016, so if you like to upgrade just buy a Haswell system now and then upgrade to Skylake in 2015/2016; in the end it will cost you about the same as buying the X99 system and not upgrading it for 4 years.

How about the new GPU to "come out soon" the 880?

So you guys really think an option of x16 3.0 times 2 is not much faster then x16 and x8 if you go sli?

Also in particular to the new GPU does it make sense to wait in the hope that it will lower the price of the current boards and does anyone not think that AMD/NVIDIA are not going to have new GPUs out for x-mass?

1. No, it's not much faster at all. Review: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Intel/Ivy_Bridge_PCI-Express_Scaling/ *and no, the new platform won't make a difference

2. Yes, they always do.

3. Next year, there will be even newer hardware. Don't pay too much attention to it. If you need a computer buy one.

I'd rather skip x99 and do Skylake. At least then DDR4 will be less sucky. I wouldn't change your plans for 1150.

I was thinking of changing platform weith Skylake for a long time, then just wanted to buy X99 but then still wanted the Skylake again as X99 only really brings quad channel memory and more cores and that's it. Not much is known, but they will be using L4 eDRAM on some Skylake models and that's what i want + more cores and stuff. Just fixed up my oldie i7 920 for more performance and it should work till Skylake actually gets released.

So, unless you really can't go without, i'd wait for Skylake as well.

I guess the real question for me is x16/x8 vs x16/x16/ (maybe)x16 really faster or is as most things 4%+?
No, the reviews that I and others have posted are fabrications. :)

The fastest GPUs out (right now) cannot saturate X8 by X8 PCI-E lanes. So X8 speed hardware slots on the motherboard is still good. Usually a primary X16 slot will default to X8 speed when you add the second GPU into the mix. (X8 by X8)
It works really well for me on this system. Don't sweat the small stuff.

so your saying dont bother looking for x16/x16 mobos and x16/x8 or x8/x8 is fast enough with an 780ti?

You'll see very little difference in using two X8 as opposed to two X16 slots. You can see the difference in benchmarks, but not in real world usage.

If you wait until the new NVIDIA cards come out, (a month or two) two things could possibly happen. Prices on existing GPUs may come down dramatically, and the possibility exists that the rumors are true and they will be cooler running with better performance, all for a lower price.

The problem with waiting is that there is always a new, bigger/better thing on the horizon and if you continue to wait, you never go anywhere. LOL!

According to the ASUS Product page, it will do X16 by X16, with the third X16 sized slot running at X4 speed.

what x16/x8 MOBO do you guys think is best for the 780ti sli(x97 idealy)? Forget about cost, is asus z97 WS or asrock z97 extreme 9 worth it vs the extreme 6 or maximus vii? ?

P.S. what is the difference between the "ranger" and "hero"?
Thanks

Hero has a Z87 PCH, Ranger has a Z97 PCH. Other than that, they're basically the same. The Hero has two more SATA ports, but I don't think that's worth the older PCH.
Two google searches could have answered that question pretty quickly, it did for me.

Thank you for reaffirming that they're basically the same board. The ranger appears to have a couple useless bells and whistles plus 2 SATA ports as I said before but, hardware wise it is about the same.

Last I checked it was the year 2014 and search engines exist....

All jokes aside, these are not the questions you should be asking. Everyone perceives worth differently, so really you need to make a shortlist within your budget and draw up pros and cons for each and compare. Then, and only then, it would be appropriate to ask questions like, "Has anyone had experience with X brand or Y board?" or "I see Y board has Z network interface, is there any advantage over X features?".

If you put ASUS' page for both of those boards side by side, they're almost exactly identical. Use your own advice and you'll see real quickly why he asked.

Im guessing that the GPU release is not near probably q4, look at how much is coming out on x99 vs GPU though i did find something saying AMD coming out with 295. also read that x16/x16 and x16/x8 are similar but x8/x8 is starting to be felt at higher res

Im guessing that the GPU release is not near probably q4, look at how much is coming out on x99 vs GPU though i did find something saying AMD coming out with 295. also read that x16/x16 and x16/x8 are similar but x8/x8 is starting to be felt at higher res
Even PCIE 2.0 8x is not saturated in a normal scenario and PCIE 3.0 8x is the same way. In reality if you slap 2 Titan Black (Or 290Xs whatever your fancy) into a motherboard running with 2 16x slots and another running on 8x slots you would not see a real difference. The extra lanes on the X99 interface normally are mostly meant for the extra GPU's beyond 2 and for the extra cores, quad channel memory, among other things.

I can attest that unless your really interested in running 3-4GPU's then X99 is not for you (Gamer wise).

PCI3 3.0 Has double the bandwith of pcie 2.0 so a x8 3.0 is EQUAL to a 2.0 X16 Assuming of course that the card and board are pcie3

This guy kinda reminds me of vwmwmmwarevwmmv or whatever that idiots name was. :shadedshu:

So much effort put into this thread already and hes still asking stupid questions or saying odd stuff.... most, if not all of his original (multiple) thread questions have been answered and he would find out everything else he needs to know via TPU reviews.

This should be left to die so some other person in need can be helped (and not overlooked for 5 days which is quite common) and maybe the OP will actually stop trololololing all the way home or go read something of use in the review section.... or if hes so unsure about tech as a whole, maybe buy a Mac? :wtf:

Some further reading for the OP, just in case he actually isnt trolling:
